How to Keep a YouTube RTMP Stream Running Through Brief Network Outages with FFmpeg

FFmpeg does not document its HTTP reconnect flags as a general RTMP output recovery switch. Here’s how to configure YouTube, test an outage and plan failover.

Short answer: FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are for HTTP transfers and do not provide a documented, general-purpose way to reconnect a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output. You can reduce outage risk with a correctly configured stream, upload headroom, monitoring and a tested recovery plan—but neither FFmpeg nor YouTube promises that viewers will see one uninterrupted session after a network drop.

What happens when the network drops?

An RTMP/RTMPS connection carries your encoder’s feed to YouTube. A brief outage may interrupt that connection; whether the FFmpeg process stays alive, reconnects, exits or leaves the output unusable depends on the protocol, FFmpeg build, muxer state and process lifecycle. A valid FFmpeg command alone cannot prevent a connectivity disruption from breaking the stream. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

There is no universal reconnect grace period established for YouTube live streams, and successful reconnection does not establish that the event or viewer playback will continue without a visible interruption. Test the exact encoder, source, network and YouTube event you plan to use.

Configure YouTube’s ingest endpoint safely

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the event’s stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. The key acts like a password for the feed; keep it private and do not include it in public commands, screenshots, logs or support posts.
  2. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. In Stream settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL; the ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default.
  3. Use the assigned URL and key as separate values. Do not substitute an endpoint from another event or expose the key while troubleshooting. If YouTube reports an SSL error, check that the URL uses the correct scheme and host. Where appropriate for the assigned endpoint, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to use port 443.
  4. Confirm the feed in Live Control Room. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status before relying on it for an event.

For the current setup workflow, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, stream settings and stream keys and RTMPS guidance.

Set encoder settings and leave upload headroom

YouTube’s published guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution and frame rate; a bitrate recommendation is not a promise that your connection can sustain it.

H.264 example YouTube-recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. Other combinations have different recommendations. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions rather than treating either example as a universal setting.

Measure available upload bandwidth under the conditions in which you will stream, then compare it with the total outgoing streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you send both primary and backup streams, include both in the bandwidth budget. Congestion, other household or office traffic, Wi-Fi interference and changes in the uplink can still cause trouble; do not plan to use the full measured upload rate.

Why FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags do not solve RTMP output drops

FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed and retry delays in the HTTP protocol section. They apply to HTTP transfers or inputs; they are not a documented general RTMP publishing reconnect switch. An option that works on an HTTP input should not be assumed to restore an RTMP output.

In particular, do not blindly add -reconnect 1 to an RTMP output command and assume YouTube will resume. Check the protocol-specific options supported by the FFmpeg build you actually run, using its documentation or ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp and, for a secure endpoint, ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmps. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes the scope of protocol options; it does not guarantee recovery of an interrupted YouTube publishing session.

Build a recovery plan around the encoder

Keep the process and source observable

Do not assume that a short transport loss means the encoder process has failed. Monitor FFmpeg’s logs and exit status alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If FFmpeg exits or remains disconnected, an operator or an external service manager or watchdog may need to restart it. After any restart, verify the YouTube preview and actual viewer playback; do not treat a running process as proof that the feed has recovered.

Prepare a genuinely separate backup for important events

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Test with the actual event configuration and verify what viewers see. A second output from the same computer, power source or uplink may share the very failure that took down the primary, so identify shared dependencies when designing the fallback.

Check source continuity after a restart

If FFmpeg reads a file or captures a live device, test the restart behavior for that source. Confirm that timestamps, audio/video synchronization and content continuity are acceptable. These details depend on the particular source and implementation; there is no general guarantee that a restarted process will resume at the right point or preserve synchronization.

Test the outage, not just the startup

  1. Run the same encoder, source, network path and YouTube event configuration intended for production.
  2. Check the preview, stream health and audio/video before introducing a failure.
  3. Simulate the relevant network interruption—for example, use YouTube’s recommended failover test of stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable when testing a backup path.
  4. Observe whether FFmpeg remains alive, exits or reports errors, and whether YouTube continues receiving the feed.
  5. If the primary fails, exercise the real recovery procedure: restart or fail over, then confirm the preview and viewer playback have resumed.
  6. Record the recovery time and any visible interruption for your own deployment. Repeat after changes to the encoder build, source, endpoint, network or failover setup.

YouTube advises testing before an event and monitoring stream health. A successful test demonstrates only the behavior of the tested setup; it does not guarantee seamless recovery during a future outage.

Troubleshoot common failure points

Symptom Likely check What to do
FFmpeg reports an error or exits after the outage Process status and FFmpeg logs Use your operator procedure or external service manager to restart the encoder, then verify the YouTube preview and playback. Do not assume an HTTP reconnect option will repair the RTMP output.
FFmpeg is running but YouTube shows no incoming feed Live Control Room stream health, selected endpoint and key Confirm the current event’s URL and key, then determine whether the output is actually connected. Keep the key private while checking configuration.
RTMPS reports an SSL error URL scheme, host and assigned endpoint Use the RTMPS URL revealed in Stream settings. Where appropriate to that endpoint, check port 443.
Feed degrades or drops under load Actual upload capacity versus total outgoing bitrate Reduce the bitrate or competing traffic and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Count primary and backup outputs together.
Backup does not take over as expected Failover configuration and shared host, uplink or power Run YouTube’s failover test and verify that the player rolls over. Remove shared failure points where the event’s requirements justify it.
Video resumes at the wrong point or audio is out of sync Source behavior, timestamps and restart procedure Test the file or capture-device restart path in advance and adjust the source or procedure; behavior is implementation-specific.
Stream key appears in logs or shared material Commands, screenshots, logs and public posts Remove or redact exposed material and replace the key in YouTube’s stream settings if it may have been disclosed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel without leaving an FFmpeg host and home uplink running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. The computer at home can be off, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month.

For a service intended to keep a live capture encoder connected, this is not a substitute for the FFmpeg recovery plan above: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
