To loop a video in OBS without compromising its quality, enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then set OBS’s output resolution and frame rate separately. Looping only repeats playback; it does not improve the file, make lower-resolution footage 4K, or create native 60fps motion. For genuine 4K60 output, the source must contain the detail and frame rate you expect, and your system must decode, render, and record or stream it smoothly.
How to loop a video in OBS without changing its quality
- Add the clip. In your scene’s Sources box, select + → Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local video file. OBS’s Media Source guide lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; available support can vary by operating system and installed codecs. OBS Media Sources
- Enable the repeat. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS then plays the file again after playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes visible; OBS lists it as enabled by default in its guide. Show nothing when playback ends matters when playback is allowed to end, rather than loop.
- Preserve the intended frame in the scene. Position and size the source to fit the canvas. Avoid enlarging a smaller source and expecting the transform to restore missing detail. A source can be 4K while appearing softer if it is scaled, cropped, or displayed at a lower output resolution.
- Test decoding if needed. The optional Use hardware decoding when available setting lets OBS use the GPU for media types it can decode; the guide lists it as off by default. Try it if decoding load is a concern, but it is not an image-quality switch and cannot restore detail lost to compression.
If you are looping a playlist rather than one file, OBS’s VLC Video source has a separate Loop Playlist option and requires VLC. The OBS guide specifies that the 64-bit OBS build requires 64-bit VLC.
Set OBS to deliver 4K at 60fps
Looping, composition, output size, and frame rate are separate controls. OBS calls the canvas the base composition space and the scaled output resolution the size delivered by OBS. Its Common FPS Value controls output frame rate. The labels below follow the OBS Project’s Overview Guide; wording and available options may vary with OBS version, operating system, and hardware. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the composition size you intend to work in, commonly the source, game, or display resolution.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 for 4K output. If you scale the output below that, the delivered video is not 4K.
- Set Common FPS Value to 60 if you need a 60fps output.
- Apply the settings and make a short test recording or stream. Inspect the resulting file or service output rather than relying on the preview alone.
OBS cautions: “Note that 60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” A 60fps output setting does not turn footage recorded at a lower frame rate into native 60fps motion. Check the source file’s actual dimensions and frame rate as well as OBS’s output settings.

Choose recording quality, encoder, and container
These choices affect compression, file size, compatibility, and system load. They do not change whether the Media Source repeats. OBS’s recording guides describe general options; the best choice depends on your encoder hardware, editing software, destination, and tolerance for large files.
Recording quality presets
OBS’s simple recording presets are Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable, and Lossless. Same as stream reuses the stream encoder settings; High Quality targets high quality with medium file size; Indistinguishable creates larger files and may affect weaker or older hardware; Lossless uses the CPU encoder and creates extremely large files. OBS’s 2023 guide estimates Lossless at around 7 GB per minute; that is an approximate guide figure, not a guarantee for every system or codec. OBS Recording Quality Settings

Encoder quality controls
For encoder-specific recording options, OBS gives these baseline quality-control ranges: NVENC constant QP 16–23, x264 CRF 16–23, AMD CQP 16–23, and Quick Sync ICQ 16–23. Within these controls, lower values mean higher quality and larger files. Treat the ranges as starting points, not guaranteed optimal settings for every 4K60 workload. OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide
Where compatible hardware is available, OBS recommends a capable hardware encoder for local recording. Its format guidance describes AV1, HEVC, and H.264 as having different quality, compatibility, and editing-support trade-offs:

Compatibility depends on the device and destination. Confirm that your playback, editing, and upload workflow supports the codec before choosing it. OBS Supported Encoders
Recording container
OBS uses MKV as its default and recommends it for most use cases because it is resilient to interruptions and supports every audio/video encoder combination available in OBS. Some editors support it less well, so you may need to remux the recording. Fragmented MP4 or MOV can offer resilience alongside wider compatibility in some workflows. Avoid recording directly to conventional MP4 or MOV if you need an interrupted recording to remain recoverable. A container affects resilience and compatibility, not image detail. How to diagnose soft video or stutter
Change one variable at a time and test playback, recording, and streaming separately. A smooth-looking OBS preview alone does not prove the saved or delivered video is 4K60.
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The clip does not repeat | Media Source properties | Enable Loop. For a VLC playlist, check its separate Loop Playlist option. |
| The output looks soft | Original file dimensions, source scaling, and Output (Scaled) Resolution | Verify the file is actually 4K, avoid enlarging a smaller source, and set the output to 3840×2160 when 4K delivery is required. No OBS setting can restore detail absent from the file. |
| Motion looks uneven or frames repeat | Source frame rate and OBS’s Common FPS Value | Check both values, then test recording and playback separately. Setting OBS to 60fps does not guarantee that a source contains 60 unique frames per second. |
| Local playback or recording stutters | CPU/GPU load, decoding, rendering, encoding, and recording preset | Test with a less demanding preset or a supported hardware encoder, then review the OBS log. High-quality and lossless recording increase file size and may increase performance demands. |
| OBS reports network dropped frames | The dropped-frames counter and connection to the streaming service | OBS says an increasing counter indicates an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Treat this as a delivery issue, distinct from a local media source failing to decode or render smoothly. OBS Dropped Frames |
| Color range looks wrong | Media Source’s YUV Color Range setting | The current guide lists Partial as the default. Match the file and workflow rather than selecting Full indiscriminately. |
If the source loops but the saved file is not smooth, look for rendering or encoding strain in OBS’s statistics and log before changing the clip’s quality settings or buying hardware. Hardware decoding is useful only for media types the GPU supports; hardware encoding is likewise dependent on compatible hardware.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream considerations
If you send a looped video to YouTube, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in it. A technically correct OBS setup does not establish permission to broadcast the content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before streaming, particularly for reused or third-party material. Do not assume that owning a recording or adding a loop makes its contents eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel without leaving your computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it is not a camera stream.
