Fix FFmpeg Reconnecting Repeatedly During a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Livestream

Repeated FFmpeg reconnects do not identify the cause. Find the failing connection first, then check the matching input, YouTube ingestion, encoder, or outbound network.

First identify which connection is dropping: FFmpeg’s input, its publishing connection to YouTube, YouTube ingestion, or the host’s outbound network. The right fix depends on that distinction. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect switches are for HTTP; they are not a universal repair for publishing to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. A kids’ audience designation does not, by itself, identify the cause of reconnects.

Find out which connection is reconnecting

A 24/7 stream can involve multiple separate links. FFmpeg may read a live source, send its output to YouTube, and depend on the host’s network throughout. A repeated “reconnect” message is not enough to tell you which part failed. Do not add flags until you know which leg they would affect.

What to compare Evidence to check What it helps distinguish
Input versus output FFmpeg log lines naming the input or reporting output/publishing errors; identify the protocol for each URL. A dropped source read is different from a failed YouTube publish connection.
FFmpeg versus YouTube Match FFmpeg log timestamps with Live Control Room error messages and stream-health status. Encoder-side logs and YouTube’s ingestion view describe different parts of the path.
Media and host versus network Check whether audio/video continues to be produced, whether the host is under load, and whether outbound connection tests show a problem. A source or host problem is not the same as an unstable connection to YouTube.
Retrying versus recovering Determine whether FFmpeg stays alive, exits, or is restarted by a supervisor, and whether the stream resumes at YouTube. A process that keeps running is not proof that viewers receive a continuous stream.

Capture the failure before changing settings

  1. Save the complete FFmpeg command privately. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing it. Never post a live stream key in a log, forum, screenshot, or public example.
  2. Record the FFmpeg version and build banner. Option support and behavior depend on the installed release and build.
  3. Collect timestamps and log context. Save the lines immediately before and after each disconnect, not only the word “reconnect.” Note whether FFmpeg remains running, exits, or is restarted.
  4. Label every input and output. Mark each -i source and the output destination, then note its protocol—for example, whether an input is HTTP and whether the YouTube destination uses RTMP or RTMPS.
  5. Compare the same times in Live Control Room. Record YouTube’s error text and stream-health status while the issue is occurring.

Those observations narrow the failure without assuming a cause. No particular FFmpeg command, version, host, input, or YouTube error is established for this case, so there is no evidence-based single fix to apply blindly.

Use HTTP reconnect options only for an HTTP input

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation defines reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed under HTTP. In that scope, reconnect retries after a disconnect before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and can help with live or endless streams; and reconnect_streamed enables reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable inputs. The documentation also describes network-error and HTTP-error retry controls, retry counts, and delays.

This is only an HTTP-input example: put the options before the matching -i, replace the placeholder with the actual HTTP source, and retain the rest of your existing command as appropriate. Verify that your installed FFmpeg build accepts these options and confirm their behavior for that input. Do not place them in front of a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output and assume they will reconnect the publishing connection. The HTTP documentation is not a general output-side recovery guarantee.

Check YouTube ingestion and encoder settings

If FFmpeg’s output connection is the suspected failure—or YouTube reports poor stream health—check the destination and the feed YouTube is receiving before tuning unrelated input options.

  • Confirm that the stream URL and stream key belong to the intended event and match the encoder configuration. If either might be stale or wrong, verify or reset it through Live Control Room, then update the encoder securely.
  • Check the current encoder version, encoder output, CPU load, and local archive. For an always-on source or playlist, verify that it continues producing valid audio and video during the time of the reported failure.
  • Compare the configured codec, constant-bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and keyframes every two seconds, with an interval no longer than four seconds.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 examples are 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 6 Mbps at 720p60, and 3 Mbps at 480p30. These are platform recommendations for those codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not measured reconnect thresholds. Select the applicable setting for your stream and confirm that the available upload capacity can sustain it.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor Live Control Room’s stream health, real-time metrics, and messages during the event. A local recording can help reveal whether the problem is already present in the encoder’s media path or appears farther downstream.

Test the host’s outbound connection if the encoder looks healthy

If the source continues producing valid media and the encoder output appears healthy, test the strength of the host’s outbound connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends an outbound connection test and contacting the ISP if the test finds a connection issue.

A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful optional diagnostic comparison if the host currently uses Wi-Fi; it is not an official guaranteed fix. It cannot correct a wrong stream key, an HTTP option applied to the wrong protocol, a failing source, an overloaded host, or a YouTube-side problem.

Change one variable at a time and plan recovery

After each change, compare the reconnect timestamps and frequency with FFmpeg’s logs, YouTube’s health messages, and any local archive. Avoid calling the problem solved merely because the FFmpeg process stays open.

For continuous operation, treat monitoring and recovery as separate design tasks. YouTube recommends setting up and testing in advance, monitoring throughout the event, and testing failover when a backup encoder is configured. Depending on the required availability, operational planning may also need process supervision, a backup input or encoder, network redundancy, alerting, and a defined recovery procedure. No single FFmpeg reconnect option provides all of these.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.

  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streaming the upload as made without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
