To start streaming on YouTube, make sure your channel is eligible, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio, choose a method that suits your content, and test the stream before making it public. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your first event. You do not need expensive equipment to begin.

Check whether your channel can livestream

YouTube’s stated requirements are that you are at least 16, your channel is verified, and you have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling an event.

Mobile streaming has additional eligibility requirements: YouTube currently specifies at least 50 subscribers and a supported mobile device. Check the mobile live-streaming requirements if you plan to broadcast from the YouTube app.

Choose how to stream

Method Best suited to What you need to know
Mobile Phone-first updates, vlogging, or on-location coverage Use the YouTube app on a supported device and meet the mobile-specific eligibility requirements.
Webcam A simple computer-based talking-head stream You need a computer with a webcam; this is a straightforward route without a separate encoder setup.
Encoder Gameplay, overlays, screen sharing, or external audio and video equipment An encoder may be software or standalone hardware. YouTube Studio provides the server URL and stream key to connect it.
Console Gameplay streamed directly from a supported modern console Follow the instructions for your specific console from its manufacturer.

Choose based on the content, equipment you already own, production complexity, and whether you want a horizontal, vertical, or dual-format presentation. YouTube’s live-streaming overview describes the available approaches.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Enable live streaming and prepare the event

  1. Sign in to the channel you intend to use. Verify the channel if needed and confirm that you meet the age and restriction requirements. Check mobile eligibility separately if broadcasting from a phone.
  2. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Do this early; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  3. Choose your method. Use YouTube’s webcam flow for a computer webcam stream. For an encoder, open YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live, and create or select a stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions, since interface details can change.
  4. Connect an encoder if you are using one. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Set the event details. Enter a title and choose visibility—public, private, or unlisted—along with the other stream details available in Live Control Room.
  6. Check your framing before you go live. Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual-format presentation in advance. YouTube says vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed on mobile; its dual-format option offers horizontal and vertical viewing from one stream setup, with the vertical layout configured in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current format guidance.

Run a test stream before your first event

Use an unlisted test if you want to check the broadcast without publicly announcing it. Before the real event, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm that the preview appears as expected. Listen for clean audio, check the picture and framing, and verify that the intended audience can access the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring audio and video quality.

  • Confirm the correct channel, title, visibility, and stream format.
  • Check that the microphone is the intended audio source and that speech is audible.
  • Look for a clear picture, stable framing, and any overlays or shared screens you plan to use.
  • For an encoder stream, verify the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event.
  • Know how to stop the broadcast from the YouTube or encoder controls you are using.

Keep the test unlisted if you do not want a public announcement. When the setup is ready, start the actual stream and end it cleanly using the relevant YouTube or encoder controls.

What equipment do you need?

Start with what you have. YouTube says beginners do not need expensive equipment: a computer webcam is enough for its webcam route, while mobile and supported consoles provide alternatives. For encoder-based production, an external microphone or camera is optional, not a prerequisite.

  • Webcam: Needed only for the computer-webcam method if your computer does not already have one.
  • External microphone: An optional audio upgrade for an encoder setup; YouTube does not prescribe a particular model.
  • Phone mount or tripod: An optional practical accessory for a stable, hands-free mobile shot; it is not a YouTube requirement.

Or let it run in the cloud
