How to Stream a 4K 60fps Video Playlist to YouTube Live with NVIDIA NVENC

Configure OBS Studio, VLC Video, and NVIDIA NVENC to loop a prerecorded 4K60 playlist on YouTube Live, with the right bitrate and a practical preflight checklist.

To loop a prerecorded playlist on YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, select a supported NVIDIA NVENC encoder, and match the bitrate to your chosen codec. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1 at 2160p60. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations—not a guarantee that your files, computer, GPU, or internet connection can sustain the stream.

Before you begin

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  • OBS Studio and an NVIDIA GPU that supports NVENC in your operating system and OBS setup. OBS documents hardware encoder compatibility, but compatibility does not establish that a particular computer can decode your files, compose the scene, scale it, and encode at 4K60 without overload. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
  • VLC installed alongside OBS. The VLC Video source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source list, install the matching VLC version and restart OBS. See OBS media source guidance.
  • Video files you own or are authorized to broadcast, and a stable wired internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, audio, and network variation.

1. Create the YouTube live event and protect its stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. The precise labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio; follow its current encoder setup instructions.
  2. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube uses these details to identify the destination and accept the encoder feed. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on-screen, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel. YouTube explains stream settings and keys.

2. Build and loop the playlist in OBS

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the stream, then use the Sources panel’s + button and select VLC Video.
  2. In the source properties, add the files in the order you want them to play. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. Turn on Loop Playlist to start again at the end of the list.
  3. Preview each file and the complete sequence. Check picture orientation and dimensions, frame rate, audio level, and whether transitions or gaps are acceptable. Playback and transitions depend on the files and local setup; do not assume the list will loop seamlessly without testing it.

OBS’s standard Media Source is intended for an individual media file; VLC Video is the playlist option. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM for Media Source, but playback suitability depends on installed codecs and the local setup. Consult OBS’s media source documentation.

3. Set OBS for 4K60 and NVENC

  1. Open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and 60 FPS if your system can sustain that workload. Use the same base canvas resolution when the scene is composed at 4K; avoid unnecessary scaling if the machine is already under load.
  2. Open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and select an NVIDIA NVENC option as the streaming encoder. The exact choices depend on the GPU, OBS version, operating system, and streaming configuration.
  3. Choose a codec and set the video bitrate to YouTube’s published 2160p60 guidance below. YouTube’s figures are ingest specifications; they do not repair low-quality source footage or guarantee a particular viewing result. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance (accessed 2026-10-03).
Selected ingest codec YouTube 2160p60 minimum YouTube 2160p60 recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

In OBS’s streaming output settings, use CBR rate control and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. The codec options shown in OBS depend on your installed hardware and configuration; do not assume AV1 or HEVC will be available simply because YouTube supports them.

This walkthrough uses SDR. YouTube’s HDR workflow calls for HEVC; its OBS HDR instructions specify a hardware HEVC encoder and Main 10 profile. HDR also requires an appropriate HDR source and full signal path, so do not select HDR settings for ordinary SDR files. Read YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube and test privately first

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if using a custom/manual server connection. Keep the key private.
  2. Set the YouTube event to unlisted or private for a test if that suits your needs. Start the VLC playlist from the beginning, start streaming in OBS, and check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
  3. Test moving video and audio similar to the real broadcast. Confirm the correct file order, levels, and loop behavior; check YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics while the test runs.
  4. After the event, stop the encoder and check the stream on the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device if viewers will use one. YouTube advises testing before going live and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Encoder test guidance · Live-streaming tips.

5. Check upload capacity, latency, and rights

The bitrate in OBS is a sustained upload requirement for the video portion, with additional capacity needed for audio and fluctuations in the connection. Run a speed test under conditions similar to your planned broadcast; YouTube does not specify a universal headroom multiplier in the cited guidance. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate rather than treating the recommendation as a guarantee.

Some latency is normal at 4K: YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable at that resolution. HLS may be relevant to certain codec or HDR workflows, but it has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends segments. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Only broadcast material you own or have permission to retransmit. Troubleshooting 4K60 playlist streams

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
VLC Video is absent from Sources VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS.
OBS reports encoder overload or dropped frames The system may be unable to sustain encoding, scene composition, decoding, scaling, or network upload at the chosen settings. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, lower bitrate if upload is the problem, or simplify the scene. NVENC support alone does not prove the whole system can sustain 4K60.
YouTube does not receive a signal The event may not be ready, or the stream URL/key may be incorrect. Confirm the event in Live Control Room, check the URL and key in OBS, and verify live streaming is enabled for the channel. Regenerate the key if it may have been exposed.
The playlist stops after the last file Loop Playlist is off or the wrong source type is in use. Use VLC Video, open its properties, and enable Loop Playlist; test the end of the list before broadcasting.
Video plays but audio is missing, too quiet, or inconsistent Files may have different audio levels, missing audio, or incompatible playback behavior. Preview each file and the transitions, inspect OBS audio meters, and test with movement and sound before going public.
Picture is not 4K or is not 60 fps The source may have a different resolution or frame rate, or the OBS output settings may not match the intended target. Check the source files and OBS Settings > Video. Setting output to 3840×2160 at 60 FPS does not create detail or motion absent from the source.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an unattended YouTube loop rather than running OBS on a local PC, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
