Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder that sends your video to YouTube. YouTube recommends a two-second cadence and says not to exceed four seconds. In OBS, change the active streaming encoder’s keyframe interval, then test the stream and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health.

What the missing-keyframes warning means

YouTube’s Live Control Room checks the incoming stream and reports problems beside the stream health indicator. Its error guidance describes keyframes arriving either too often or not often enough. YouTube recommends one keyframe every two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds; a longer interval can contribute to buffering. At 30 frames per second, a two-second interval equals 60 frames. The corresponding frame count changes with the stream’s frame rate.

The warning does not always prove that the encoder’s configured interval is wrong. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, which can affect the frequency it observes. If your setting is already correct, check the full path that carries video to YouTube for ingestion problems.

Fix the keyframe interval in OBS

  1. Identify the encoder that sends your stream. In OBS, open the output settings for the active streaming encoder. The exact control location depends on the OBS version, output mode, and selected encoder; there is not one menu path that applies to every setup.
  2. Set the interval to 2 seconds. Find Keyframe Interval or the equivalent control in that encoder’s settings and enter 2 seconds. Check the displayed units: some controls may express cadence in frames rather than seconds. At 30 fps, use 60 frames for a two-second interval.
  3. Check for a downstream encoder or relay. If OBS sends its output to another encoder or relay before YouTube receives it, that last device may determine the keyframe cadence YouTube sees. Set the interval on the device that actually sends video to YouTube.
  4. Test and verify. Start a test stream and check the stream health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; confirm that the keyframe warning has cleared.

The OBS Project’s advanced recording settings guide, dated November 30, 2023, lists a keyframe interval of 2 for several encoder examples. That guide concerns recording settings, so it corroborates the value but does not establish a universal OBS streaming-menu path.

Check related encoder settings if the warning persists

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codec options, frame rates up to 60 fps, a two-second recommended keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the value appropriate to your actual output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, test ahead of time, and monitor stream health.

  • Recheck the active encoder’s keyframe setting and confirm its units.
  • Verify whether a downstream encoder or relay changes the stream before it reaches YouTube.
  • If the cadence is correct but YouTube still reports a problem, investigate ingestion along the stream path; the warning can reflect incorrect GOP measurements caused by ingestion errors.

Do you need to switch to HLS?

No. Switching protocols is not necessary to resolve the ordinary keyframe warning. YouTube documents OBS as an encoder capable of HLS streaming, but HLS has its own segment and protocol requirements and different latency and setup characteristics. If your setup already uses HLS, consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance for those separate requirements.
