How to Send Two Audio Languages in a YouTube RTMP Stream from FFmpeg

FFmpeg can map multiple audio streams, but YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS instructions do not confirm that viewers can select language tracks in a live stream. Here’s the distinction and YouTube’s documented Studio workflow for recordings.

Short answer: FFmpeg can map multiple audio streams into an output, but YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS live-stream guidance does not establish that two language tracks sent in one ingest will appear as selectable audio for viewers. Do not treat an FFmpeg command as proof that YouTube Live supports that experience. YouTube documents alternate-language audio tracks for recorded videos through YouTube Studio instead.

Can an FFmpeg RTMP stream carry two selectable languages on YouTube?

That capability is unverified in YouTube’s published guidance cited here. YouTube explains how to connect an encoder and lists supported live audio codecs and settings, but it does not provide a recipe for sending two language tracks in one RTMP/RTMPS live stream or say that viewers can select between them. That is not proof YouTube rejects every possible dual-track ingest; it means the documented instructions do not establish that it works.

FFmpeg’s -map option selects streams for an output, including multiple streams and audio streams selected using language metadata. That is an encoder-side function, not evidence that YouTube will accept, preserve, identify, or expose those tracks in its live player. See the FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

For an event that must offer viewers a choice of spoken language while live, confirm the exact ingest and playback behavior with YouTube before relying on a proposed method. The official pages cited here do not establish a selectable dual-language RTMP solution.

What YouTube documents for live audio

YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. For advanced settings, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1. YouTube says 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

These are general audio and encoding settings, not a two-language track recipe. They do not show that separate language streams will be retained or presented as viewer-selectable tracks.

Why a multi-audio FFmpeg command is not enough

There are two separate questions: can the encoder put multiple audio streams in its output, and does the receiving service support those streams as separate selectable languages? FFmpeg’s stream mapping addresses the first. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS instructions cited above do not answer the second.

For that reason, a command containing multiple -map options should not be presented as a guaranteed way to add a language selector to a YouTube live stream. Without documented or directly confirmed YouTube support for the specific ingest method, the output could fail to carry the tracks as intended or viewers might not receive a language choice.

How to add alternate-language audio to a recorded YouTube video

YouTube does document a multi-language audio workflow for recorded videos. The YouTube Studio instructions say creators with access to Advanced features can add an additional language and upload an audio-only file for a long-form video using Studio on desktop. The added audio should be roughly the same length as the video. The creator must provide or commission the dubbing; YouTube does not create these tracks as part of this workflow.

  1. In YouTube Studio on a desktop, open the video’s language or subtitle settings and add the additional language, following the current controls shown in Studio.
  2. Upload the audio-only file for that language. Make sure it is approximately the same length as the video.
  3. Save the change and check the video’s playback options. YouTube says viewers may choose an available track through the player’s Audio track option; see Watch videos in your preferred language.

This applies to recorded videos, including new or previously uploaded videos. It is not a method for making two audio tracks selectable during an RTMP live stream.

Keep the live encoder setup secure

For an ordinary YouTube encoder connection, YouTube instructs creators to enter the live server URL and stream key in their encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential that authorizes an encoder to connect to your channel: do not publish it in commands, screenshots, logs, or examples. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps for your stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and does not turn a recording into a live camera feed; it also does not establish selectable dual-language audio for an RTMP live stream. Learn more at StreamNeo. To try it, start the free first day.
