OBS vs VLC for a Playlist-Based YouTube Radio Stream

For a multi-file YouTube radio playlist, OBS plus its VLC Video source is the documented workflow. Here’s how to set it up, test the stream, and choose cloud playback instead.

For a playlist-based YouTube radio stream, use OBS as the broadcast workspace and its VLC Video source to play a multi-file playlist. OBS handles the scene and sends the stream to YouTube; VLC supplies playlist playback inside OBS. For one repeating file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler. The reviewed official documentation does not establish that standalone VLC is a better or more reliable YouTube sender.

OBS vs VLC: what each does in this setup

Need Documented fit
Build a broadcast scene and send output to YouTube OBS, whose scenes and sources make up the stream output. OBS Sources Guide
Loop one local media file OBS Media Source with its loop control enabled. It supports common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. OBS Media Sources
Play several files as a playlist within OBS OBS VLC Video source, which supports playlist looping and shuffling. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
Use VLC alone to send a stream to YouTube The official sources cited here do not establish a current, end-to-end standalone VLC workflow, so they do not support a general claim that VLC alone is simpler or superior.

For multiple tracks, OBS plus its VLC Video source is the documented combination—not a choice between two interchangeable broadcast apps.

Set up a playlist stream with OBS

  1. Install OBS and VLC. Install VLC before configuring the VLC Video source. Match the architecture: OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  2. Create a scene in OBS. In the Sources panel, add the visual elements you need. A radio-style stream can use a still image or other visual presentation; OBS scenes and sources determine what appears in the output. The exact appearance is your choice.
  3. Add the playlist source. Add a VLC Video source, then add the local media files to its playlist. Enable playlist looping if it should repeat, and enable shuffle if you want randomized playback. The source also provides visibility behavior, network caching, and audio-track controls; adjust those when relevant to your files and scene.
  4. Check playback before going live. Confirm that the files load, audio is audible, and the order or shuffle behavior is what you intend. Test transitions between tracks rather than checking only the first item.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled for the channel. Its live-start guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. In Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s stream configuration.
  6. Set output quality for your connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the stream and your upload capacity. YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate; use the matching row in its current encoder settings and bitrate guidance instead of treating one bitrate as universal. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate on that page; these are settings recommendations, not a comparison of OBS and VLC performance.
  7. Start the encoder, preview, and monitor. Start streaming from OBS, check the Live Control Room preview and event accessibility, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify audio and video during the broadcast. YouTube advises creators to test before starting and to use audio and movement comparable to the planned stream. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.

Choose settings and checks for a radio-style broadcast

Playlist behavior

  • Use Media Source when the entire broadcast is one file that should repeat.
  • Use VLC Video when the broadcast needs a multi-file queue, playlist looping, or shuffle.
  • Keep the media available locally and check every playlist entry. A missing or unsupported file can interrupt the intended program even if the encoder remains connected.

Audio and video output

Match output quality to the real upload connection, not just the source file’s resolution. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are specific to resolution and frame rate, so consult its current settings table before choosing encoder values. Its cited recommendations for stereo audio are 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Test with the same sort of audio and movement that the broadcast will contain, and listen to the preview for silence, clipping, or abrupt track changes.

Rights and channel eligibility

A file being on your computer—or music being available through a subscription—does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it on YouTube. Confirm that you have rights covering livestream use and the territories and duration you intend. The YouTube setup documentation cited here does not establish licensing rules for particular tracks. Also verify the channel’s live-streaming eligibility before building a schedule around a broadcast.

What the comparison can and cannot tell you

OBS is the more complete documented choice when the job includes scenes, output configuration, and YouTube encoder operation. VLC’s documented role here is playlist playback through OBS’s VLC Video source. The available official pages do not provide a head-to-head reliability benchmark, establish a standalone VLC-to-YouTube workflow, or compare reliability across operating systems. Choose on the basis of the workflow you need, then test your own playlist, output, and connection before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and check that VLC and OBS have matching architectures; OBS documents the 64-bit-to-64-bit requirement.
  • Playlist does not repeat: Check the VLC Video source’s playlist loop control. For a single file on Media Source, use that source’s loop control instead.
  • Tracks play in an unexpected order: Review the playlist order and shuffle setting, then test playback before connecting to YouTube.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm that the stream URL and key in OBS match the values in Live Control Room, the encoder is running, and the channel is eligible to livestream. Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to narrow down the issue.
  • Stream health reports problems: Check the upload connection and whether the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate fit its capacity. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health during the event.
  • There is no audio or track changes sound wrong: Check the VLC Video source’s audio-track selection, OBS audio meters, and the Live Control Room preview. Test transitions between files, not only the opening track.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on playlist rather than a hands-on OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube livestream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
