A backup audio source covers silence or an audio-device problem while OBS is still streaming. It is not the same as YouTube’s backup ingestion URL, which is for a failed connection path.
First decide what failure you need to cover
“Backup audio” can mean two different safeguards. Choose the one that matches the failure, or set up both if you need coverage for both layers.

A backup ingestion URL does not, by itself, detect that your program audio has gone silent. Conversely, a second audio source inside OBS does not protect against OBS losing its connection to YouTube.
Set up an alternate audio source in OBS
1. Choose suitable fallback audio
Pick an audio source OBS can access if the main feed fails. Options include a second audio input device or a local file added as an OBS Media Source. A local file can provide continuity, but it cannot recreate the live program. Choose a suitable fallback playlist, station ident, or other audio, and make sure you have the rights to use it in your stream.

OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files and includes a Loop option. In the source’s properties, select the file and enable Loop if you want playback to repeat. Verify the source is available in the scene used for the stream; merely adding it does not make it take over automatically.
2. Decide how the source will take over
For a manual setup, assign an operator to switch to the fallback when the program feed fails, and document which OBS scene or source control they should use. If you want automation, independently verify that the specific automation mechanism detects the failure you care about and switches sources as intended. The OBS source and mixer documentation cited here does not establish built-in automatic silence detection and source switching, so do not assume a second source will activate by itself.

3. Check levels and avoid duplicate capture
Watch the OBS audio mixer meters while the primary and fallback sources play. Use audio monitoring through headphones or another monitoring output to confirm the sound is clean and at an appropriate level. OBS cautions that selecting a device globally and also capturing that same device as a scene source can create echo. If you use a scene-specific capture for a device, disable the duplicate global device where appropriate.
4. Test the failure you expect
- Start a local recording or test stream using the scene and audio routing intended for the 24/7 broadcast.
- Deliberately interrupt the relevant program feed or audio device while keeping OBS connected.
- Switch to the fallback using the planned operator action or automation, then confirm the mixer meter moves and the output is audible.
- Check that the fallback level is suitable and that playback continues for as long as needed.
This test is practical setup guidance, not a reported test result. If the fallback does not reach the output, check that it is active in the live scene, unmuted, routed correctly, and not dependent on the same device or feed that just failed.

Configure YouTube ingestion redundancy separately
If you also need a connection fallback, YouTube Help’s “Set up an HLS stream” instructions apply to HLS. YouTube says: “If you need a backup ingestion, copy the ‘Backup server URL.’” In Live Control Room, select HLS, copy the backup server URL, and configure an HLS-capable encoder to use it. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, so account for that trade-off when selecting an ingestion method.

For HLS specifically, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codecs. Its advanced recommendations include a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are HLS-specific details, not universal RTMP recommendations. Check Live Control Room’s stream health indicator for configuration errors before relying on the backup path; YouTube also documents live-stream errors at “Live streaming error messages.”
