First compare the encoder’s disconnect time with your router’s WAN status or ISP records. If they coincide, ask your ISP about the WAN reset; otherwise, troubleshoot upload capacity, Wi-Fi, VPNs, and other common causes before changing your stream setup.
Can a changing public IP disconnect a YouTube live stream?
Yes. When a router or ISP changes the public-facing WAN address, active network sessions can be disconnected. That gives a plausible way for an encoder’s established connection to YouTube’s ingest service to fail. NETGEAR describes this session-disconnection mechanism in an article dated July 8, 2025, but its examples concern NETGEAR cloud products; they do not establish that your ISP changed your address or predict how OBS or YouTube will reconnect.
A stream dropout alone is not evidence of an IP change. Unstable or insufficient upload, Wi-Fi problems, VPN interference, network-prioritizing software, router faults, and ISP connectivity issues can produce similar symptoms. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and OBS’s troubleshooting guide both point to network and encoder causes that should be checked alongside the WAN address.
Confirm whether the WAN connection changed at the time of the drop
- Record the disconnect time. Note the time and time zone shown by OBS or your encoder. If it happens repeatedly, record each occurrence.
- Check the router’s WAN status and event log. Look for a WAN disconnect, reconnect, lease renewal, or address change close to the encoder timestamp. Router menus vary by manufacturer and model; consult the router’s own interface or manual for the WAN status and log pages.
- Ask your ISP to check its connection records. Give support the timestamps and ask whether the WAN session reset or public address changed at those times. The ISP can also advise whether it can improve connection stability.
- Compare more than one event if possible. A single coincidence is suggestive, not conclusive. If encoder drops repeatedly line up with WAN resets, the ISP-side connection becomes a stronger suspect.
The available evidence does not establish how often any particular provider changes an address during a live stream, whether your connection uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), or whether your encoder will reconnect reliably in this exact situation. Those details depend on your ISP, router, encoder, and connection logs.

Fixes to try, matched to the likely cause
Set OBS Bind to IP to Default
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and set Bind to IP to Default. OBS explicitly recommends this setting for network troubleshooting. Choosing a local network interface manually does not pin the public WAN address assigned by your ISP, so it is not a way to prevent that address from changing.
Test Ethernet if you are streaming over Wi-Fi
Connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and test again. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Treat this as a test of the local wireless link, not as a fix for an ISP-side WAN reset. If Ethernet makes the stream stable while the WAN remains up, investigate Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or router wireless performance.

Check upload stability and leave headroom
YouTube’s network guidance says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Test outbound speed under conditions similar to your live stream, then compare the stable upload capacity—not just the highest speed shown by one test—with the encoder’s total bitrate. If capacity is marginal or fluctuates, reduce the bitrate and test whether dropped frames improve. A lower bitrate can reduce congestion-related drops, but it cannot keep an established session alive through a genuine WAN break.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for codec and resolution-specific bitrate recommendations rather than guessing a universal bitrate. Test before going live and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators. If a lower bitrate helps, the cause may be capacity or congestion rather than a changing public IP.

Test local software and network equipment carefully
- VPN: Temporarily test without the VPN, if you use one. A VPN can affect the route between your encoder and YouTube.
- Firewall or security software: Check whether it is interfering with the encoder’s network traffic. Use safe, temporary tests; do not leave protective software disabled.
- Network optimization tools: OBS advises checking software that prioritizes or manages network traffic, since it may deprioritize OBS. Disable or remove a suspected tool only for a controlled test.
- Router or ISP: If local tests do not resolve outbound connection problems, contact your ISP and ask it to investigate the connection. OBS also recommends escalating to the ISP when its network troubleshooting does not fix the issue.
Check YouTube’s ingest URL and protocol only when indicated
If the encoder reports a server URL, protocol, or connection-endpoint error, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and verify that the encoder uses the stream URL and key shown there. If you use RTMPS, use YouTube’s RTMPS URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance specifically points to checking the server URL, port, and encoder support for those errors. These checks address a wrong endpoint or protocol; they do not prevent an ISP’s WAN address from changing.
A stream key functions like a password for sending a stream to your channel. Keep it private, and do not reset it just because the connection dropped unless there is evidence of a key or configuration problem.

Why DDNS or a static IP is not a general stream-drop fix
Dynamic DNS (DDNS) updates a DNS record when a public IP changes, helping a hostname continue to point to the new address. TP-Link’s DDNS guide, dated May 17, 2023, describes that name-to-address function. It does not preserve an already established outbound encoder session to YouTube when the underlying WAN session breaks.
For the same reason, do not buy DDNS or request a static IP as a blanket remedy. Consider an ISP-specific address or routing change only if the ISP’s diagnosis shows it addresses the connection problem you actually have.

Choose the intervention that fits the evidence
| Intervention | What it addresses | When it fits | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Bind to IP: Default | OBS network-interface binding | As a basic OBS troubleshooting setting | Does not pin or control the ISP-assigned public IP. |
| Ethernet test | Local Wi-Fi instability | You currently stream over Wi-Fi | May require a cable; does not fix an ISP-side WAN reset. |
| Lower encoder bitrate | Upload congestion or insufficient capacity | Stable upload cannot sustain the current total bitrate | Can reduce video quality; does not prevent a WAN session break. |
| VPN, security, or network-software test | Local software interference or routing | You use such software and symptoms suggest it may affect the encoder | Test carefully and restore security protections; it will not correct an ISP reset. |
| ISP investigation | WAN resets, address changes, or persistent outbound connectivity problems | Router or ISP records coincide with drops, or local troubleshooting fails | The provider must diagnose the line and determine what changes are available. |
| DDNS | Keeping a hostname pointed at a changing address | A service you reach by hostname needs to follow a changing IP | Does not maintain an active outbound YouTube ingest session. |
| Stream URL or RTMPS correction | Wrong endpoint, port, or unsupported protocol | The encoder reports an ingest configuration or protocol error | Does not prevent a WAN address change. |

Common symptoms and what to check
- OBS disconnects at the same time the router logs a WAN reset: Share both timestamps with your ISP and ask it to investigate the WAN session and any public-address change.
- Dropped frames improve after switching to Ethernet: Focus on the Wi-Fi link or router wireless performance; the test does not establish that the public IP changed.
- Dropped frames improve after reducing bitrate: Check stable outbound capacity and keep YouTube’s recommended headroom. A bitrate change can help congestion, not a confirmed WAN break.
- OBS shows a server, URL, port, or protocol error: Verify the Live Control Room endpoint and, for RTMPS, encoder support and the correct RTMPS URL.
- Drops persist after local checks, with no clear WAN evidence: Preserve encoder timestamps and ask your ISP to check outbound connectivity. Do not assume CGNAT or an address change without provider or router evidence.
