You can stream a 4K video file to YouTube Live at 1080p without converting the file first: play it in streaming software such as OBS and set the software’s output to 1920×1080. The file stays 4K on your computer; the encoder sends a 1080p feed to YouTube. Set the frame rate and bitrate for that output, preserve the video’s aspect ratio, and test playback and audio before going live.
What “downscaling” means for a live stream
Your source file and your live output are separate. A 4K recording can remain untouched while streaming software scales the picture it sends to YouTube to 1920×1080. YouTube’s encoder setup asks for the outgoing resolution, frame rate and bitrate, then transcodes the live stream for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
This approach avoids an offline conversion step. It does not change the resolution of the original file. If you also need a smaller 1080p file for storage or editing, that is a separate export task.
Set up a 1080p output in OBS
OBS menu wording can vary by version. The following settings describe the workflow; the scaling and performance details are supported by OBS-related guidance hosted on a GitHub Wiki mirror, so verify labels in your installed version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Add the recording: In your scene, add a Media Source and choose the pre-recorded video file. Confirm that the file’s video and audio play together. Route its audio into the stream mix and check that the correct track is audible.
- Choose the output size: Open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution appropriate for your scene; it can remain at the source or canvas size while the output is scaled down.
- Check the framing: Preserve the source aspect ratio. If the 4K file is not 16:9, decide whether to crop part of the image or letterbox it with bars rather than stretching it to fill 1920×1080.
- Select a downscale filter: Bilinear uses the fewest system resources; Lanczos uses more resources and can look sharper. Bicubic is another option. Compare fine detail and moving footage on your own machine instead of assuming one filter is always best. OBS performance guidance describes the trade-off.
- Set the frame rate: In Settings > Video, select 30 or 60 fps to match the source and the motion cadence you want. A 60 fps output carries more frames and calls for a higher recommended bitrate.
- Configure the encoder: In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder and codec available in your setup. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, but not every encoder or software workflow offers every combination. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS rather than unencrypted RTMP. YouTube’s advanced encoder recommendations cover protocol, codec and audio settings.
- Connect YouTube: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key. Enter the key in your streaming software’s stream settings, taking care not to share it; anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your stream.
Choose bitrate, codec and audio settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following recommended and minimum ingestion bitrates for 1080p. These are YouTube’s figures for the named codec and frame rate, not a guarantee that every connection or encoder will deliver a stable stream.
| Output | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Start with the recommended bitrate for your chosen output and codec, then check that your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test. Leave headroom for normal network variation; a speed test result is not a promise of continuous capacity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- 30 or 60 fps: Prefer the source’s native cadence when practical. Use 60 fps when that motion cadence matters and your connection and encoder can sustain the higher recommended bitrate; otherwise, 30 fps may be the more reliable choice.
- H.264 or AV1/H.265: Choose a codec your software and encoder actually support, and use the matching bitrate recommendation. Check compatibility in your encoder rather than assuming all combinations are available.
- Audio: YouTube supports AAC or MP3. Its advanced recommendations list stereo at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
- SDR color: YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth for SDR.

Test the file and stream before going live
Test with movement and sound resembling the planned broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use the test to catch playback and encoding problems before viewers encounter them.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Black bars, stretched faces or cut-off edges | The source and output aspect ratios differ, or the source has been resized without preserving its proportions. | Inspect the source dimensions and choose a deliberate crop or letterbox layout. Do not stretch a non-16:9 image to fill 1920×1080. |
| Soft or jagged fine detail | The scaling filter, source detail or scaling load may affect the result. | Compare bilinear, bicubic and Lanczos with the actual footage. Choose the best visible result that your system can handle. |
| Stream stalls or reports poor health | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate consistently. | Run an upload speed test, check whether other network activity is competing for capacity, and reduce output bitrate or frame rate if stability remains a problem. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | The wrong track may be selected, audio may not be routed into the stream mix, or playback timing may differ. | Check the media source’s audio and OBS mixer levels, then test the same portion of the recording before the live event. |
| YouTube does not accept the stream or the encoder fails | The selected codec may not be available in the encoder, or protocol, keyframe or bitrate settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Confirm the encoder supports the chosen codec, use RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and check that the stream key is current. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for prerecorded video
Having a file ready to play does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its video or audio. Before streaming, confirm that you own the material or have the necessary rights for a public live broadcast, including music, game footage and other third-party elements. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help you review permissions before you go live.
