Yes. YouTube scans live streams for copyrighted-content matches. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder image, a temporary interruption or—if the content remains—a stream termination. If you archive the stream, a separate Content ID claim can arrive after the live broadcast ends. Whether that happens depends on the rights to the particular music, the rights holder’s settings, YouTube’s matching and enforcement, and territory. Repeating a soundtrack does not grant permission to use it.
What can happen while the stream is live?
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. When it detects a match, it may warn you and replace the stream with a placeholder image. If the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A live interruption can happen before any claim appears on an archived replay. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes these live checks and outcomes.
Can the saved replay receive a Content ID claim?
Yes. If you choose to archive the live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream is complete. That later claim is distinct from live enforcement: a stream can be interrupted during broadcast, and an archived video can receive a claim afterward.
A Content ID claim may block a video, monetize it for the claimant (sometimes with revenue sharing), or track its viewership. The policy can vary by territory. A claim is not automatically a copyright strike, and it does not necessarily affect the channel itself. A copyright takedown is a separate process: it removes the content and can result in a strike. See YouTube’s explanation of Content ID claims and its copyright strike guidance.

Does it matter whether the music is original to the game?
It can matter for how the recording is handled in Content ID, but it does not by itself establish that you can rebroadcast it.
Original game soundtrack
YouTube defines an original video game soundtrack as music recorded specifically for a game, such as its original score or background music. YouTube says an original game soundtrack is a valid Content ID reference only when the game publisher owns it and delivers it under the publisher’s content owner. That rule determines who may submit the soundtrack as a reference; it does not grant streamers permission to use it. YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance sets out this distinction.

Music licensed into a game
A track by an outside artist, label or publisher may have been licensed for use inside the game. YouTube’s original-game-soundtrack rule does not apply to popular music licensed for inclusion in a game. “It came from a game” is therefore not enough to determine whether a loop is permitted: identify the actual track and the rights that cover it.
What permission do you need?
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. The terms specify rights for exploitation of Live Content on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels and publishers. They are a platform requirement, not a complete statement of copyright law in every jurisdiction. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

A purchased game or music copy, a credit in the description, or a track described as “free” does not by itself prove that you have the rights to broadcast it. Also check separately whether your permission covers monetization, an archived replay, the territories where viewers may watch, and the channel you plan to use.
Check these things before you go live
- Identify the exact music. Record the game and track name, and determine whether it is the game’s original score or a separately licensed song.
- Read the publisher’s current terms. Check its streaming and music policy for live broadcasts, continuous music-only streams, archived VODs and monetization. YouTube notes that monetization of game content depends on commercial-use rights granted by the publisher; extended gameplay may not be accepted without appropriate rights. YouTube’s game-content monetization guidance explains its platform criteria, but does not decide the rights to a particular soundtrack.
- Verify any separate music license. Confirm that it covers livestreaming and saved VODs, the relevant territories, and your intended channel. If the rights holder requires it, ask them to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
- Use another soundtrack if permission is unclear. YouTube recommends public-domain music or music you have permission to use, and points creators to Audio Library and Creator Music as possible sources subject to their terms. Check YouTube’s Audio Library information.
- Plan for a claim or interruption. Keep a way to mute or replace the music and know how to stop the broadcast if YouTube warns you. If a notice arrives, inspect the claimant, matched segment, policy, territories, and whether it is a Content ID claim or a takedown.
If you receive a claim
Review the notice and the rights you actually hold before responding. YouTube says a dispute is appropriate when you have a valid basis—for example, the necessary rights, a copyright exception, or a genuine misidentification. The claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. Credit, owning a copy, or believing game music should be exempt are not, by themselves, valid grounds. Read YouTube’s dispute guidance.

Do not treat a Content ID claim and a takedown as interchangeable. Check the notice type and its consequences before choosing a response; disputing without a supportable reason can escalate the matter.

Having permission to broadcast gameplay does not necessarily establish permission to use every track in the game, and permission to stream music does not guarantee YouTube monetization. YouTube says game-content monetization depends on commercial-use rights from the publisher. Its guidance also says commentary should be closely tied to the live action and provide instructional or educational value; extended footage of gameplay alone may not qualify without the appropriate rights. These platform criteria do not determine soundtrack ownership or guarantee a channel’s monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization guidance for game content.
