For a mostly static playlist, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps in OBS if your source video, encoder and sustained upload connection can handle it reliably. This is a practical starting point—not a preset required by YouTube or OBS. If a long test shows dropped frames, encoder overload or insufficient upload headroom, step down to 1280×720 at 30 fps and test again.
Choose the highest setting your setup can sustain
Resolution is only one part of a dependable 24/7 stream. Choose based on the playlist’s detail, the quality of the source files, sustained upload capacity and the load on your computer. For mostly static material, 30 fps is a sensible starting point: OBS warns that streaming at 60 fps can tax a system substantially more than 30 fps. Higher resolution or frame rate is not an improvement if the stream becomes unstable.
- Start at 1080p30 when your video is at least 1080p, your encoder has headroom and your upload can reliably sustain the required bitrate.
- Try 720p30 if the source is lower resolution, the connection lacks upload headroom, or testing reveals dropped frames or encoder overload.
- Consider 60 fps only when it serves the content and your encoder and connection can sustain it. A playlist with little motion usually has less reason to use 60 fps than fast-moving footage.
YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable on the available connection and monitoring stream health. Its published bitrate values are recommendations for ingest settings, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can maintain them. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists separate recommendations for H.264, AV1 and H.265/HEVC.
Set OBS’s outgoing resolution
In OBS, Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution determines the resolution sent to the stream. The canvas can match your source or monitor while the output is scaled down. OBS’s streaming guide describes Output (Scaled) Resolution as the stream output resolution; its interface may vary by installed version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings in OBS and select Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 for the 1080p30 starting point, or 1280×720 if you are testing the lower-load option.
- Set Common FPS Values to 30.
- Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution appropriate to how your scenes are composed. If the canvas and output differ, OBS scales the composition to the selected output size.
- Apply the settings, then test with the actual playlist, encoder and network conditions you intend to use.
Use YouTube’s bitrate and encoder guidance
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations list these ingest bitrates. They are configuration recommendations, not verified measurements of your connection’s capacity.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
For YouTube ingest, the same guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For SDR, its advanced recommendations include Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. Available codecs and settings depend on your encoder; use the matching codec guidance rather than applying H.264 bitrate values to another codec.

YouTube says it will automatically detect resolution and frame rate by default. Regardless of automatic detection, configure OBS deliberately and check the resulting stream health rather than assuming a chosen output will be delivered consistently.
Test for a 24/7 run, not just a clean start
A short successful test cannot establish that a setup will remain stable around the clock. Run the actual playlist long enough to expose recurring network or encoder problems, and inspect OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health feedback while it runs. If you see dropped frames, encoder overload or unstable delivery, lower the output resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. YouTube also advises testing upload bitrate and selecting a reliable quality.

- Use the same source files, scene layout, encoder and network connection planned for the live stream.
- Check that upload capacity has headroom above the stream’s target bitrate; other network use can reduce what is available to OBS.
- Watch for dropped frames and encoder overload, not only whether YouTube initially accepts the stream.
- Test the intended resolution and frame rate together. Changing either can alter network demand or system load.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
Resolution does not change YouTube’s archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If keeping an archive matters, plan regular stream endings under 12 hours and keep a local recording backup. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common resolution and stability problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames during the stream | The connection may not sustain the configured output bitrate consistently. | Check stream health and available upload headroom. Lower the output to 720p30 and retest. |
| Encoder overload | The system may be struggling with the chosen output, frame rate or encoder settings. | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test the same playlist again. OBS notes that 60 fps is more demanding than 30 fps. |
| Image looks soft or blocky | The source may have less detail than the output, or the bitrate may be inadequate for the selected codec and content. | Check the source resolution and apply the bitrate guidance for the codec you actually use. Upscaling a low-resolution source does not restore detail. |
| Stream starts but does not remain dependable | A brief initial connection does not establish continuous stability. | Run an extended test under the intended conditions and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for a 24/7 schedule. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
