YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for an NVIDIA GPU Playlist Stream

Set YouTube Live bitrate by outgoing resolution, frame rate, and codec—not NVIDIA GPU model. See YouTube’s recommended targets and the encoder settings for a playlist stream.

For a 1080p60 YouTube Live stream, use a video bitrate of 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 17 Mbps with H.264. At 1080p30, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations: choose the row for the resolution, frame rate, and codec your encoder actually sends, not for the NVIDIA GPU model.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution and codec

The following figures are YouTube’s recommended video-ingestion bitrates. “Minimum” is the minimum listed in YouTube’s table, not a guarantee that a stream at that rate will look good for every scene or connection. The table applies to the outgoing stream; it does not establish that every NVIDIA GPU, driver, or encoder application supports every listed codec and mode. YouTube’s official guidance page was accessed October 3, 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Output resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p60 (4K) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p60 6 Mbps 24 Mbps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p30 5 Mbps 15 Mbps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

Encoder settings that matter

Choose the matching codec and output mode

Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to the stream you intend to send, then match the bitrate to that row and codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in its guidance. At 1080p60, for example, its recommended bitrate differs by codec: 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. The table is not a universal quality ranking, nor does it identify which NVIDIA GPU generations or applications can encode each format.

Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval

  • Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: every two seconds is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its general encoder guidance also lists RTMP.

These are YouTube’s general encoder settings, not NVIDIA-specific control names. If your application exposes different labels, use its documentation to map them to CBR, keyframe interval, codec, and transport.

Configure a playlist stream without guessing

A playlist or prerecorded-video source does not have a separate bitrate table in YouTube’s reviewed ingestion guidance. Set the output mode for the stream the encoder sends, even if the source is a playlist rather than a live game capture. The GPU model matters only insofar as the actual encoder can produce the chosen mode; it does not change YouTube’s bitrate recommendation.

  1. Choose the outgoing mode. Decide whether the stream will be 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p and 30 or 60 fps, as applicable to your source and encoder.
  2. Choose an available codec. Use H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 only if your encoder application and GPU support it in the desired output mode.
  3. Set the bitrate. Select the recommended value for that resolution, frame rate, and codec from the table. If the connection cannot reliably sustain it, lower the output mode and use the corresponding row rather than relying on an unstable target.
  4. Set CBR and keyframes. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
  5. Connect to YouTube. Create or select the stream in YouTube, copy its stream key into the encoder, and use RTMPS if your application supports it. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  6. Test the actual playlist. Before going live, run a test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health and warnings while broadcasting.

Check upload capacity and stream health

YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable on the available internet connection and recommends running an upload-speed test. Compare the result with the bitrate you plan to send, remembering that the stream is only one use of the connection and other traffic can compete with it. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a universal upload-headroom multiplier, so there is no single official margin to apply to every connection.

Test with the actual playlist material: scenes with fast movement, detailed imagery, fades, and audio changes may behave differently from a static screen. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and Manage your live stream.

RTMPS versus HLS

For a standard encoder workflow, use RTMPS when available; the bitrate table above is the relevant general encoder guidance. HLS is a separate ingestion workflow with its own requirements, not a setting to mix into an RTMP/RTMPS configuration.

Troubleshooting common bitrate problems

YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream

Check that the selected bitrate matches the outgoing codec and resolution, then test the connection and reduce the output mode if the connection cannot sustain the target reliably. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than changing several encoder settings at once.

The encoder does not offer AV1 or H.265

Use a codec the installed GPU and encoder application actually offer, such as H.264, and select the H.264 column for the matching resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendations do not certify support for a particular GPU, driver, or application.

The stream looks poor despite meeting the listed bitrate

Confirm the encoder is sending the resolution, frame rate, and codec you used to select the target. Test representative motion and check whether the connection is stable. The table gives platform recommendations, not a promise of identical visual quality across content, encoders, or network conditions.

Playlist playback works locally but does not reach YouTube

Verify the stream key and destination in the encoder, confirm the stream is started in the intended YouTube control-room workflow, and inspect stream-health messages. If you use HLS rather than RTMPS, check its segment format, duration, HTTPS method, and playlist limits separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube playlist stream, StreamNeo can run uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running on your home computer or connection. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
