If YouTube Live reports encoder overload at 1080p, first check the encoder’s CPU load and local recording. If the local output is healthy, investigate upload stability instead. For a computer that cannot encode the stream reliably, test a lower resolution or frame rate; lower bitrate when the connection cannot sustain the configured upload rate. The right change depends on which bottleneck you have.
What encoder overload means—and what to check first
An overload warning does not, by itself, tell you whether the limit is your computer, the source going into the encoder, or the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separates encoder and local-output checks from connection checks, so diagnose those paths before changing settings.
- Read the encoder’s status or log. Note the exact warning and when it appears. The software, hardware, codec, frame rate, and wording of the alert matter; “overload” is not a universal diagnosis.
- Check encoder CPU load and inspect the local recording or output. YouTube advises checking encoder CPU load and the local archive when a stream looks or sounds poor. If the local output is already unhealthy, focus on the encoder or source path rather than assuming bitrate is the fix. YouTube Live streaming troubleshooting
- If local output is healthy, test the outbound connection. Compare the stream’s behavior with upload capacity and check for connection problems; contact your internet provider if the connection itself is at fault. A healthy local file with a troubled live stream points toward investigating the path to YouTube, not automatically lowering the video resolution. YouTube Live streaming troubleshooting
The practical distinction is an inference from YouTube’s separate encoder and connection troubleshooting steps, not a universal YouTube rule for every overload alert.
Which setting should you change?
If the computer is the bottleneck
Test a lower output resolution or frame rate first. Those changes reduce the video work the encoder must handle; reducing bitrate alone mainly changes how much data must be sent and does not directly reduce the amount of video that must be encoded. This is troubleshooting guidance inferred from YouTube’s diagnostic split, not a platform-prescribed algorithm. Change one setting at a time and compare results.

If upload capacity is the bottleneck
Set a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. Reducing resolution or frame rate may also let you use a lower bitrate, but first address the mismatch between configured upload rate and available connection capacity. A bitrate recommendation is an ingestion setting, not proof that your home connection can sustain it or that your computer can encode it.
If the evidence is mixed or unclear
Keep the current settings long enough to establish a baseline, then change one variable and repeat a representative test. Avoid lowering several settings at once: it can hide the cause and make it harder to tell whether image quality, encoding stability, or connection health improved.

YouTube’s recommended ingestion settings
The following figures are YouTube’s recommended and minimum H.264 video ingestion bitrates, accessed October 3, 2026. They describe what to configure for ingestion at each resolution and frame rate; they do not guarantee that a particular encoder or connection can handle those settings. Use the recommendation for your codec—H.264, AV1, and H.265 figures are not interchangeable.
| Output | H.264 recommended | H.264 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 (accessed 2026-10-03) | 5 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | 10 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 (accessed 2026-10-03) | 6 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | 12 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | 3 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | not stated here (YouTube’s listed figures) |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | 3 Mbps — YouTube, accessed 2026-10-03 | not stated here (YouTube’s listed figures) |
YouTube also lists constant bitrate (CBR), support for up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings for details, including codec-specific ingestion settings.

How to compare 1080p with 720p
Do not treat the choice as “higher quality versus lower quality” alone. Weigh the diagnosed bottleneck, frame rate, codec, and what the game footage needs to show.
- Resolution and motion: 1080p retains more image detail than 720p; fast gameplay may benefit from 60 fps, but a demanding 1080p60 encode can be harder on the encoder than a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate output.
- Codec: Use the bitrate recommendation for the actual ingest codec. Do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265 as if they were equivalent.
- Visible result: Judge the tested stream at the viewer end, especially small interface text, rapid camera movement, and detailed scenes—not just the encoder preview.
- Stability: A reliably delivered 720p stream is generally more useful to viewers than a 1080p stream that repeatedly stutters or drops. Confirm the trade-off in a test rather than assuming a particular setting will solve every overload alert.
Test before the next live stream
- Reproduce the real workload: use gameplay, scene changes, audio, and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- Record a local sample and monitor CPU load and the encoder’s status. If the local output is unhealthy, test a lower resolution or frame rate.
- If the local output is healthy but delivery is unstable, test the outbound connection and set a bitrate it can sustain.
- Change one setting, then repeat the test and compare local output and live stream health.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on stream-health messages. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube Help: encoder settings
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports overload and the local recording looks bad | Encoder CPU load, source quality, and the local output | Test lower resolution or frame rate, one change at a time. |
| Local recording looks fine, but the live stream is unstable | Outbound upload capacity and stream-health messages | Test the connection and choose a bitrate it can sustain. |
| 1080p runs poorly only at 60 fps | Whether the encoding limit appears with the higher frame rate | Test 1080p30 or 720p60, then compare stability and motion quality. |
| Changing bitrate does not clear a local overload | Whether the encoder itself is struggling despite a healthy connection | Restore a suitable upload rate and test lower resolution or frame rate. |
| Picture or sound problems appear only in the live output | Local archive versus delivered stream, then the connection path | Use YouTube’s encoder and connection troubleshooting checks to isolate the fault. |
Copyright and YouTube Live eligibility
Changing resolution or bitrate does not resolve copyright or live-stream eligibility issues. Use content you have the rights to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current requirements and restrictions before an event. For gaming streams, consider the game publisher’s streaming policy as well as rights to music, overlays, and other material included in the broadcast. A technically stable encoder cannot prevent a rights claim or policy enforcement.
