How the setup fits together
Think of each scheduled block as its own playout task. For example, a gaming channel might have one playlist for morning highlights and another for evening matches. Shuffle the videos within each playlist, then use a scheduling layer to switch between the blocks at the chosen times.
- Make a playlist for each block. Keep the videos for each programming period separate, rather than mixing every video into one list.
- Enable shuffle within each playlist. This randomizes the order of that playlist’s files; it does not decide which block is active.
- Set the block schedule separately. Use a scheduler or playout system to activate the relevant playlist at the desired time and configure whether it loops or plays once.
- Test the handoffs. Check transitions, sound, looping, and what happens when a source or scene becomes visible again before relying on the schedule live.
Set up shuffled blocks in OBS with VLC
OBS’s official VLC Video source supports playlists, shuffle, and looping. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. The source documentation describes shuffle as randomizing the media files rather than retaining the file-list order; it does not promise a unique sequence on every activation or loop. OBS Media Sources (January 11, 2022) and the OBS Quick Start Guide explain the relevant setup and testing basics.
- Install VLC. Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then restart OBS if the VLC Video source is not available.
- Create the block’s source. In OBS, choose a scene, select Sources → + → VLC Video, and create or select the source.
- Add the block’s video files. In the source properties, add the local files for that block to the playlist. Repeat with a distinct playlist/source arrangement for each block you want to schedule.
- Turn on shuffle. Enable Shuffle Playlist. This randomizes file order; do not assume that each block activation will produce an order never seen before.
- Choose the playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the block should continue cycling until the schedule changes content. If it should play once, leave looping off and plan what should happen when playback ends.
- Arrange the block switch. Use a separate scheduler or automation method to make the appropriate playlist or scene active at the scheduled time. OBS’s cited media-source documentation covers playback controls, not clock-based scheduling.
- Record a short test. Verify picture, audio, the playlist’s loop behavior, the switch between blocks, and the result when a source becomes visible again. The Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before going live.
What shuffle does—and does not—guarantee
Shuffle means randomization, not a promise that every pass or scheduled activation will produce a completely new sequence. OBS’s documentation does not state that a shuffled playlist avoids repeats across activations. If strict rotation, no-repeat rules, or a specific order is important, confirm that your chosen playout system supports those rules rather than relying on the OBS shuffle control.

Use a calendar-based playout system
A calendar-based workflow can combine block timing with playlist playback. The playout.video calendar guide documents placing videos, playlists, or compositions in time slots, setting recurrence, and choosing loop or play-once behavior. Its playlist guide describes shuffle, including reshuffling after each loop pass. Those are vendor-specific documented features; check the service’s current capabilities and plan availability before choosing it.
- Create a playlist for each block and add the videos that belong in it.
- Enable shuffle for the playlist and choose loop or play-once behavior to suit the block.
- Place the playlists in the calendar’s desired time slots and set recurrence where needed.
- Set an appropriate fallback for gaps, then test the schedule and transitions before relying on it for a continuous channel.
Why YouTube does not do the shuffling for you
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a live broadcast as an event and supports binding it to a video stream. YouTube Help’s scheduling guide concerns when an uploaded video is published. Neither source documents scheduling and shuffling prerecorded files inside a broadcast that is already running. That selection belongs in the encoder or playout system feeding the stream.

Troubleshoot block playback
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: install VLC on the OBS computer and restart OBS.
- The videos play in list order: open the VLC Video source properties and check that Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- A block stops after one pass: enable Loop Playlist if the block should continue cycling until the scheduler switches it.
- The right playlist does not start at the scheduled time: check the separate scheduler or automation layer. Playlist shuffle itself does not schedule a block change.
- A scene change does not restart or reshuffle as expected: OBS does not document a guarantee of a unique sequence every time a source is activated. Record a test of the exact visibility and transition behavior in your setup.
- There is a gap or unexpected content between blocks: inspect the scheduler’s transition and fallback settings, then test the handoff before going live.
Keep the videos and stream rights in order
Before using recorded gameplay, music, or other material in a continuous broadcast, confirm you have the rights needed to stream it and that the content follows YouTube’s rules. A shuffled playlist changes playback order; it does not grant permission to use a video or soundtrack. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
