OBS 30 FPS vs. 60 FPS for a 24/7 YouTube Video Playlist

For a mostly static 24/7 playlist, 30 FPS is a practical starting point. Use 60 FPS when smoother motion matters and OBS plus your upload connection can sustain it.

For a mostly static or slowly moving 24/7 YouTube playlist, start with 30 FPS. It asks less of OBS than 60 FPS, and YouTube’s recommended 1080p H.264 bitrate is lower at 30 FPS. Choose 60 FPS when your videos contain motion that benefits from smoother playback and your computer and upload connection can sustain it.

What changes between 30 FPS and 60 FPS?

Frames per second (FPS) is how many video frames the stream sends each second. At 60 FPS, movement can look smoother than at 30 FPS when the source footage contains fast movement and was recorded at 60 FPS. For still images, slides, ambient scenes, or footage already playing at 30 FPS, the higher output setting does not itself add motion detail.

OBS has to render and encode more frames at 60 FPS, increasing its workload. For a stream intended to run continuously, that extra workload matters: a setting that looks good in a short preview is not useful if OBS cannot maintain it reliably.

30 FPS vs. 60 FPS: settings and trade-offs

Decision 30 FPS 60 FPS
Best fit Mostly static visuals, slow movement, or source footage at 30 FPS Fast movement where smoother motion matters, especially with 60 FPS source footage
OBS workload Lower rendering and encoding workload Higher rendering and encoding workload
1080p H.264 recommended bitrate 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p H.264 recommended bitrate 6 Mbps 6 Mbps
For an always-on stream A sensible starting point when movement is limited or stability margin is uncertain Use if testing confirms both encoding and upload remain stable

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not universal values for every codec or resolution. Use YouTube’s encoder settings table for your exact resolution, frame rate, and codec. The table lists live frame rates up to 60 FPS.

Set up and test the OBS stream

  1. Choose the frame rate for the source. In OBS, open Settings > Video and set Common FPS Values to 30 or 60. Start at 30 for mostly static or 30 FPS material; select 60 only when the content and system justify it.
  2. Match resolution and bitrate to YouTube’s guidance. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate for your chosen codec and resolution. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p60, and 6 Mbps at either 720p30 or 720p60. Other codecs have different recommendations.
  3. Use a constant bitrate and two-second keyframes. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. If streaming over RTMP, use RTMPS when available as the secure option recommended by YouTube.
  4. Connect OBS to the intended YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  5. Test a representative section before relying on it. Include the playlist’s real audio and movement, then check OBS’s encoding performance and connection diagnostics and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A short successful test does not prove an unattended stream will stay uninterrupted indefinitely.

Diagnose dropped frames or encoding overload

  • OBS reports encoding overload or rendering lag: the computer may not be keeping up with the selected workload. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance; if 60 FPS is not working, reduce to 30 FPS and test again. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
  • OBS reports dropped frames: the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Confirm the bitrate against YouTube’s guidance and test the actual upload connection. OBS warns that enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
  • YouTube shows poor stream health: check the incoming encoder stream even if YouTube can transcode the live broadcast into different output formats. Transcoding does not make an unstable feed from OBS stable.

Keep a 24/7 playlist running

With OBS, your computer must keep rendering and sending the broadcast, and the upload connection must remain usable. A streaming PC with enough sustained encoding capacity and a stable internet connection are therefore practical requirements; neither a brief test nor a higher FPS setting guarantees uninterrupted operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It accepts uploads as made up to 4K 60 FPS at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
