How to Stream a YouTube Live Loop from a Windows Scheduled Task

A scheduled task can launch an encoder, but YouTube setup, file looping, account access, and the public-live transition all need testing.

You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder at a set time, feed it a prerecorded video on repeat, and send the output to a YouTube Live broadcast. The pieces are separate: YouTube must be configured to receive the stream, the encoder must loop and transmit the video, and Task Scheduler must start that encoder in an account and environment that can access the file and network. Scheduling a task by itself does not guarantee that YouTube will publish the broadcast or that the stream will recover after a failure.

What you need before scheduling the stream

  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test well before the planned broadcast.
  • A scheduled or otherwise configured YouTube Live broadcast, with its stream URL and stream key.
  • A Windows-compatible encoder that can send to YouTube and repeat a media file. FFmpeg supports real-time file input and RTMP output, but the official documentation cited here does not establish one universal infinite-loop command. If using FFmpeg, verify the loop and encoding options for your installed build; otherwise choose an encoder with a documented repeat-input setting.
  • A local video you have the rights to stream, plus an audio track and video format the encoder can read.
  • A Windows account and task configuration that can read the media and encoder settings and reach the internet when the task runs.

YouTube recognizes software and hardware encoders; expensive equipment is not required to get started. A Windows PC is enough for this workflow if it remains available to run the encoder.

Set up the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set the title, visibility, and event details. A scheduled broadcast can create an upcoming watch page where viewers can set reminders.
  2. Open the broadcast’s stream settings and copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s output settings. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for the encoder; keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  3. Choose how the broadcast will transition from receiving the encoder feed to being live. With the manual flow, start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop controls in stream settings; when enabled, they can change that flow. Confirm the settings for this specific broadcast rather than assuming a scheduled Windows task will click Go live.

Configure an encoder to repeat the video

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents real-time reading from a file and RTMP output. Its protocol documentation gives this general example: ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. It illustrates the input/output pattern, not a YouTube-specific command and not an infinite loop. Replace the example output with the current YouTube ingest details in your encoder configuration, and use a loop setup verified for your FFmpeg build. Do not assume that repeating a file or selecting an encoding option is covered by that example.

For background execution, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends adding -nostdin to prevent input checks. It also documents redirecting standard input to NUL on Windows. Keep a log of the encoder’s output so you can distinguish an input, configuration, or connection problem from a task that never launched.

Using another compatible encoder

Select the encoder’s documented option to repeat or loop the input file, then configure its YouTube output with the stream URL and key. Check whether the selected encoder expects the complete ingest address and key together or in separate fields. Confirm the input loops as intended before relying on a scheduled run.

Create and test the Windows scheduled task

Microsoft’s schtasks utility can create, query, start, and end scheduled tasks. A task runs using its saved program location and user account. Those details matter: a task may start successfully yet fail to access a video, configuration file, network resource, or interactive desktop feature needed by a particular encoder.

  1. Save the encoder configuration and media in locations the intended Windows account can read. Use full paths for the encoder executable, input video, and any script or configuration file.
  2. Create a task for the intended trigger time and select the account under which the encoder should run. Choose the task’s execution context deliberately; test the actual encoder in that context rather than relying on a different account’s interactive session.
  3. Have the task launch the encoder or a batch file that launches it. For FFmpeg background use, include -nostdin in the invocation or use the documented Windows standard-input redirection to NUL.
  4. Run the task on demand before the event. Verify that the encoder starts, reads the correct file, loops it, and reaches YouTube. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. If using manual go-live, confirm the preview and click Go live yourself.
  5. Query the task and inspect its result and encoder log after the test. Establish a stop procedure, and make sure a retry or second scheduled trigger will not leave two encoder processes competing to use the same stream.

Microsoft documents commands to create, start, query, and end tasks, but there is no single Task Scheduler checkbox combination established for every encoder and account setup. The relevant test is whether your task, under its real scheduled account and conditions, can access the necessary resources and deliver the feed.

Choose manual go-live or encoder auto-start

Control flow What happens Trade-off
Manual YouTube go-live The scheduled task starts the encoder; an operator checks the preview and clicks Go live. A person can catch a bad feed before publication, but someone must be present.
YouTube encoder auto-start/auto-stop enabled The encoder can start or stop the broadcast according to the stream’s configured controls. It reduces the manual transition step, but depends on the broadcast settings and must be tested on the actual channel setup.

Check video quality, bandwidth, and archiving

YouTube’s encoder recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS include CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees: match the encoder setting to the chosen codec and resolution, and make sure the available upload connection can sustain it. The source page’s publication year was not exposed.

Troubleshoot common failures

The task runs, but YouTube receives no feed

Check that the encoder has the current stream URL and key, can reach the network under the task’s account, and is reading the intended input. Look at its log and YouTube’s preview and health indicators. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.

The task starts only when you are logged in

Test the saved account and execution context. Confirm that the task can access the file, encoder configuration, and network at trigger time. An encoder that depends on an interactive desktop session may behave differently when launched as a background task.

The broadcast receives a feed but does not become public

With the manual scheduled-stream flow, a person must wait for the preview and click Go live. If you expect the encoder to start the broadcast automatically, inspect the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and test that behavior separately.

The video does not repeat or the process exits at the end

Confirm that the selected encoder’s loop/repeat option is enabled and supported for the input type and installed version. The FFmpeg RTMP example above does not provide loop syntax; validate the chosen configuration rather than treating a successful one-pass stream as proof of a repeating setup.

A second stream process appears after a retry

Use the task’s query and stop controls and inspect running encoder processes before relaunching. Keep a clear stop procedure and test what happens when a scheduled trigger occurs while an earlier process is still active. A scheduled task alone does not establish automatic recovery from a dropped stream.

The picture stutters or YouTube reports stream health problems

Check that the configured bitrate matches the codec and resolution, the keyframe interval follows YouTube’s recommendation, and the upload connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate. Test and monitor the feed ahead of the event rather than discovering a bandwidth limit during the scheduled broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Windows PC to stay on for the stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a live camera. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
