Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OBS’s dropped-frame counter is rising, lower Settings → Output → Video Bitrate until the bitrate is sustainable on your connection. OBS recommends starting at about 75% of your total upload speed, but that is a rule of thumb—not a guarantee. Choose based on upload capacity that stays reliable while streaming, not a brief speed-test peak.
What OBS dropped frames mean
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says the software itself is extremely unlikely to cause network-dropped frames. In other words, a high bitrate can exceed the capacity of the route from your computer to the streaming server, even if OBS is otherwise functioning normally. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide (September 30, 2024) explains the symptom and its common causes.
First confirm which problem you have: watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter while streaming. If it is increasing, troubleshoot the connection to the ingest server. If viewers report buffering but OBS is not dropping frames, that is a different issue: the stream may be difficult for their connections to receive. OBS’s viewer-buffering guidance discusses that distinction.
Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain
Use 75% as a starting point, not a fixed formula
OBS suggests beginning at 75% of total upload speed. Apply that only as an initial estimate: the suitable setting depends on stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits. A speed test’s highest result does not establish what your connection can sustain continuously, and a percentage cannot account for every fluctuation or route problem. If frames keep dropping, reduce the video bitrate and test again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Change the setting in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Find Video Bitrate and lower the value from the setting that is producing dropped frames.
- Apply the change, stream long enough to observe whether the dropped-frame counter continues to rise, and adjust again if needed.
There is no single bitrate that the available OBS guidance establishes as stable for every YouTube streamer. Nor does it provide a current resolution-by-resolution YouTube bitrate table. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations before setting a platform-specific maximum; do not treat the 75% starting point as YouTube’s limit.
Work through connection and ingest causes
Test a different ingest server
Open Settings → Stream and try another available server. If the problem changes, the selected route or server may be involved. OBS also suggests testing another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison; that test can help distinguish a service-specific issue from a broader connection problem, but does not by itself identify the cause.

Prefer Ethernet and check the network path
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable changes the local connection method; it cannot guarantee a fix for ISP instability, packet loss elsewhere, or ingest routing.
- Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection.
- Review network-optimization utilities, which may deprioritize OBS traffic.
- Check for outdated network drivers and modem or router connectivity issues.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide lists these as causes or diagnostic avenues. Make one change at a time and observe the counter so you can tell whether it helped.
Windows-only network options
OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing among Windows settings to test. It also describes IPv4-only as a diagnostic option; if switching to IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. These options are not universal steps for every operating system, and changing them does not replace checking the underlying connection.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS offers dynamic bitrate adjustment to reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may prevent some drops, but it does not fix the underlying network problem and can reduce picture quality. The guide describes this option as beta; treat it as a fallback if the root cause cannot be resolved, rather than as the first bitrate-setting strategy.
Separate network drops from viewer buffering and encoding problems
Viewers buffer, but OBS reports no dropped frames
If OBS’s counter remains steady while viewers report buffering, investigate delivery to viewers rather than assuming your ingest connection is dropping frames. Reducing resolution or bitrate may make the stream easier for viewers with slower connections to receive. OBS’s viewer troubleshooting page is dated June 9, 2021; use it for the distinction, not as a statement of current YouTube limits.

OBS reports encoding lag instead
Do not infer a CPU or GPU encoder problem from network-dropped frames alone. If OBS reports an encoding-performance issue rather than an increasing dropped-frame counter, follow OBS’s separate encoding-performance troubleshooting path and diagnose that symptom on its own.
Check keyframe consistency for YouTube
OBS states that YouTube transcodes streams, including the source feed, and recommends a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation to support smooth transitions between quality options. This is relevant to stream delivery, but it does not determine the bitrate your particular upload connection can sustain. See OBS’s transcoding guidance (June 9, 2021), and check YouTube’s current recommendations for the applicable interval.

When the cause is still unclear
- Reproduce the issue and save a current OBS log.
- Review the log and seek help with it through OBS support channels if the connection checks do not clarify the cause.
- Keep the diagnosis tied to the symptom: an increasing network-dropped-frame counter points toward connection stability or capacity, while encoding-performance warnings need a separate investigation.
OBS’s Help Portal defines dropped frames and directs users to detailed troubleshooting. Its guidance does not establish one universal stable bitrate or a current YouTube maximum for each resolution.
Or let it run in the cloud
