To add a YouTube stream key to FFmpeg on Ubuntu, copy both the server URL and stream key from the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio, then use them together as FFmpeg’s output destination. The key alone is not enough: it is a credential, while the server URL identifies where FFmpeg sends the video.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These platform conditions can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and limits.
- FFmpeg installed on Ubuntu and an input file or other source you want to stream. This guide covers the FFmpeg command and YouTube configuration, not a particular Ubuntu package installation command.
- The server URL and stream key for the specific YouTube stream you intend to use.
Copy the server URL and key from YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you want to broadcast.
- Open the stream’s Stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions distinguish the encoder’s server setting from its stream-key setting; in FFmpeg’s direct command-line form, these values are combined in the output destination. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Use the values shown for that stream rather than guessing an endpoint or borrowing one from another broadcast. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a password: don’t publish it in an article, screenshot, shared log, or source-control repository. If it is exposed or rejected, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder wherever the old key was stored. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Build and run the FFmpeg command
For a video file, use this as a template, replacing each placeholder with your own value:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
INPUTis the input file path or other FFmpeg input.SERVER_URLis the server URL copied from Live Control Room.STREAM_KEYis the key copied for that same stream.
The placeholders are not literal values. Follow the server path and key format YouTube displays for the selected stream; don’t add or remove path components based on a guessed convention. The quoted destination keeps shell-special characters in the URL or key from being interpreted by the shell.
FFmpeg documents the real-time file input and FLV-over-RTMP pattern with -re and -f flv. The example’s video and audio codec options are illustrative settings, not universal YouTube requirements or a tested preset. Your input and desired output may call for different encoding options. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

- Run the command in a terminal on Ubuntu. Keep the terminal open while FFmpeg is sending the stream.
- Check the terminal output for connection or encoding errors, then look for the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled broadcast, once the preview appears, select Go live in Live Control Room. For an immediate-start stream, YouTube’s setup flow may instead make the stream live when the encoder connects. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Choose RTMP or secure RTMPS
Use the protocol that matches the URL displayed in Live Control Room. YouTube shows the regular RTMP URL by default; to use its secure option, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, so the protocol and host in the destination should both use rtmps. Don’t combine an RTMP URL with an RTMPS host or vice versa. YouTube notes that port 443 may help with certain SSL errors. See YouTube’s RTMPS connection guidance.
FFmpeg documents both RTMP and RTMPS, but support depends on how the installed binary was built. To inspect the protocols available in your local build, run ffmpeg -protocols and look for rtmp or rtmps. This diagnostic does not guarantee a connection; confirm that the URL and key are correct and that your network permits the connection. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Which one should you use?
- RTMP: use it when the regular RTMP URL is selected in Live Control Room and your FFmpeg build supports it.
- RTMPS: use it when you want the encrypted transport and have copied YouTube’s secure URL. Verify local FFmpeg support before troubleshooting the stream key.
