If the Minecraft Launcher will not open, first identify where it fails: the Launcher itself, Microsoft Store, account or license sign-in, or the game after you press Play. Those symptoms need different fixes. Start with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft, then use the Windows-specific repair steps only when they match your problem.
First, identify what “won’t open” means
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, match the problem to the point where it happens. Minecraft’s official guides separate Launcher startup failures from Store problems, missing Play buttons, and Java Edition crashes after launch.
- The Launcher window never appears, closes, freezes, or shows “This App Can’t Open”: follow the Windows Launcher repair steps below if you use Windows.
- Microsoft Store will not open or install the Launcher: reset the Store cache and check Windows settings.
- The Launcher opens, but sign-in fails or Play is missing: check which Microsoft account is signed in.
- The Launcher opens and Play works, but Java Edition crashes: troubleshoot the Java installation rather than the Launcher.
Check the Microsoft account and Minecraft license
Minecraft Help advises using the same Microsoft account that has a Minecraft license to sign in to the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. A mismatch can affect license validation and Launcher features, even if the Launcher itself starts. See Minecraft’s Launcher troubleshooting guidance.
If the Launcher opens but the Play button is missing, sign out of both the Launcher and Microsoft Store, then sign back in with the account that owns Minecraft or has the relevant PC Game Pass subscription. A missing Play button is an account or entitlement clue, not necessarily a startup failure. More detail is in Minecraft’s guidance for Launcher issues.

If Microsoft Store will not open on Windows
Microsoft’s Store cache reset is a targeted step when the Store itself will not launch. It does not repair every Launcher problem.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type
wsreset.exe, then select OK. - If Store still will not open, check for Windows updates and verify that your time and location settings are correct.

If the Windows Launcher crashes, freezes, or says it can’t open
The following steps apply to the Windows Launcher, not macOS. Try the narrower repair options before reinstalling. Windows repair menus can differ by release, so use Microsoft’s current app-repair workflow rather than relying on a fixed menu path. Minecraft lists app repair, Gaming Services repair, Store-cache reset, and reinstall as possible remedies for these symptoms in its Launcher troubleshooting guide.
Repair the Launcher app
Use Windows’ built-in repair option for the installed app. This attempts to fix the app without starting with a full uninstall. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for repairing apps and programs in your Windows version; the available labels and route can vary.

Use Gaming Services Repair Tool for update or freeze problems
Try the Gaming Services Repair Tool when the Launcher or Minecraft is having update problems, or Minecraft freezes or stops responding. Minecraft says Xbox services deliver game updates, making this a more relevant step for update and freeze symptoms than for every case where a window fails to appear.
Reset the Store cache
If the Store is involved in the failure, run wsreset.exe as described above. This is also one of the cache-reset steps Minecraft lists for Windows Launcher crashes.

Reinstall the Launcher only after backing up worlds
Minecraft recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the Launcher for general Launcher problems and some Windows crash or freeze cases. Its crash-and-freeze guidance explicitly says to back up Minecraft worlds before uninstalling. Reinstalling is a broader reset than repairing the app, so do not skip that precaution.
If Microsoft Store will not install the Launcher, Minecraft lists the Xbox app and Minecraft.net as alternate download routes. The Minecraft.net download still requires a Microsoft Store login to install properly. See Minecraft’s installation troubleshooting information.

If Java Edition crashes after you press Play
A Launcher that opens normally but crashes when starting a Java profile has a different failure point. Minecraft Help recommends creating a new Java installation using the same game version, then testing it. If that fresh installation works, investigate mods or advanced settings in the original installation, such as its resolution or JVM arguments. Follow Minecraft’s Java crash troubleshooting guidance.

No single fix is established as the best answer for every Launcher failure. If none of the steps fits, note your operating system, the exact error text, and whether the failure happens before or after pressing Play; that identifies which support path applies.
