How to Add a Countdown Between Videos in a Continuous YouTube Stream

Put a rendered countdown clip between videos in an OBS VLC playlist for an ordered, repeatable YouTube stream—or use a separate scene with a configured trigger.

To show a countdown between videos in a continuous YouTube stream, put the countdown into the video sequence your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, the simplest dependable method is to add a rendered countdown clip between the videos in an ordered VLC playlist. YouTube’s “Take a Break” countdown is for an operator-controlled pause; it is not a recurring timer that automatically appears between playlist items.

Method 1: Put a countdown clip in an OBS playlist

This method makes the countdown an ordinary item in the outgoing program, so it can play in sequence without someone switching scenes at each boundary. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and looping, and requires VLC Media Player. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC source is available to OBS.
  2. Prepare the countdown clip. Make or obtain a video of the duration you want, such as a 30-second countdown. For the smoothest sequence, match the countdown’s resolution and frame rate to the rest of your program. Check its audio: decide whether it should be silent, include music or a sound cue, or continue the program’s audio. These are production choices; OBS does not automatically validate that clips match.
  3. Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Add the videos and countdown clip to that source’s playlist in the order you want viewers to see them—for example, Video A, Countdown, Video B, Countdown.
  4. Set playlist behavior. Turn on looping if the sequence should repeat. Leave shuffle off if the order matters. Review the complete playlist, including its final item and what should play after it loops.
  5. Send the OBS program to YouTube. Start the scheduled or live broadcast using the stream setup shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the protocol and encoder settings appropriate to your existing stream; adding a countdown does not by itself require changing protocols. YouTube documents HLS setup separately, with protocol-specific encoder requirements and higher latency than RTMP: Set up an HLS stream.
  6. Rehearse the whole sequence. Check the end of each video, the countdown’s picture and sound, the transition to the next item, and the playlist loop. Verify what actually reaches YouTube, not only the OBS preview. OBS recommends testing before a live stream in its Overview Guide.

What makes this method reliable

The countdown is part of the same playlist as the videos. That avoids relying on an automatic scene change at a video boundary. The trade-off is that the countdown is a fixed media clip: to change its duration, wording, or appearance, edit or replace the clip.

Method 2: Use a separate countdown scene

A separate OBS scene is useful when you want more control over the break’s appearance or want to change the timer independently. It does require a transition trigger: the reviewed OBS documentation describes scenes, source layering, transitions, and scene-switching hotkeys, but does not promise that a playlist item ending will automatically switch to a countdown scene.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Create a break scene. Add a background and a countdown using a Media Source, text source, or browser source. OBS sources are layered, so place the timer above the background or video it should cover. See the OBS Sources Guide.
  2. Arrange how the scene will be triggered. You can switch with a scene transition or configure a hotkey for the relevant scene. OBS’s overview explains scene switching and hotkeys: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  3. Plan the return to the next video. Decide who or what will switch back, and rehearse the timing. Do not assume that playlist looping or the end of a video will trigger the scene change on its own.

A controller such as a Stream Deck can be configured as optional manual hotkey hardware. It is not required to generate the countdown, and the cited documentation does not establish it as an automatic video-end detector.

Which method should you choose?

Consideration Countdown clip in playlist Separate countdown scene
Sequence behavior Fixed segment in the ordered playlist; can repeat with the playlist. Requires a separately arranged trigger to enter and leave the scene.
Setup Add the rendered countdown among the video items in the VLC playlist. Build and layer a scene, then configure or operate its transitions.
Changing duration or appearance Edit or replace the countdown clip. More directly adjustable through the scene’s sources, depending on how the timer is built.
Playlist-loop behavior Test the full ordered sequence and its return to the first item. Do not assume the loop triggers the scene; test the separately configured switch.

Why YouTube’s “Take a Break” is different

YouTube Live Control Room offers a “Take a Break” feature with an away slate and countdown. YouTube says the break does not automatically end when the countdown reaches zero; the operator must end it in Live Control Room. It is therefore suited to a temporary operator break, not an automatic recurring countdown between successive videos. YouTube also documents browser-source overlays and Stream Deck integration for ad management, which should not be confused with playlist-boundary countdown insertion. Details are in YouTube’s Monetize your live stream help page.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source menu: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s VLC source requires VLC.
  • Items play in the wrong order: Check the playlist order and turn shuffle off.
  • The countdown scene does not appear at a video boundary: Treat the scene switch as a separate operation. A playlist ending is not documented as an automatic scene-change trigger.
  • The countdown covers the wrong content: In the Sources list, adjust the order. Sources higher in the list appear over sources beneath them.
  • The sequence behaves differently after looping: Rehearse through the final item and the return to the first item, including any scene transition or audio change.
  • The YouTube output differs from the OBS preview: Check the broadcast output itself during a rehearsal and verify the full sequence before relying on it live.

Before you broadcast

  • Use countdown footage, music, and other included material that you have the rights to use. A clip appearing in a live stream does not make it yours to rebroadcast.
  • Check the countdown’s audio level and ensure it does not unintentionally cut off or overlap audio from the surrounding videos.
  • Watch at least one complete playlist cycle in the outgoing YouTube stream, including the transition from the last video back to the first.
