Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIn OBS Studio for Windows, find the setting at Settings > Advanced > General > Process Priority. Use Normal as the starting point. If OBS appears to be competing with other CPU-heavy work, try Above Normal and compare whether the stream behaves better. Do not choose High on the assumption that it will keep a stream online: process priority is not an uptime guarantee, and the reviewed OBS material does not recommend High specifically for nonstop prerecorded streaming.
What OBS process priority changes—and what it does not
Process Priority is an OBS setting in the Advanced settings area. It controls OBS’s priority relative to other processes, rather than configuring the stream itself. Changing it is therefore a scheduling adjustment to test when CPU contention may be affecting OBS; it is not a YouTube setting, a stream-key setting, or a way to make a stream recover automatically after a disconnect.
The current English OBS interface lists five choices: High, Above Normal, Normal, Below Normal, and Idle. The labels are confirmed in the current OBS English interface strings. OBS’s legacy advanced-settings help says that raising priority can sometimes help when encoding consumes substantial CPU, but that is older guidance—not a current recommendation to use High for a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream.
Which priority should you use?
| Setting | Practical use |
|---|---|
| Normal | Best starting point when OBS is working normally or you have no evidence that CPU scheduling contention is the problem. |
| Above Normal | A measured troubleshooting test if OBS is competing with CPU-heavy applications. Keep it only if repeated observation shows a real improvement. |
| High | Not established by the reviewed current OBS material as the right choice for nonstop prerecorded streaming. Do not treat it as a reliability setting. |
| Below Normal or Idle | Listed in the interface, but not supported by the reviewed material as choices for prioritizing a stream that needs to keep running. |
The evidence supports starting at Normal and cautiously testing Above Normal when CPU contention is suspected. It does not establish a universally optimal priority or a setting that prevents dropped streams. A higher label should not be treated as a substitute for identifying the actual bottleneck.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to change OBS process priority
- In OBS Studio on Windows, open Settings.
- Select Advanced, then find the General section.
- Set Process Priority to Normal unless you are testing a specific contention problem.
- If you want to test a change, select Above Normal, apply the setting, and observe the same stream workload under comparable conditions.
- If the change makes no repeatable difference—or the stream behaves worse—return to Normal.
The current English interface labels are documented in the OBS locale file. Labels or screen layout may differ in other languages or versions; the path above is for the Windows interface described here.
How to evaluate a priority change
Test one change at a time. Compare the same scene, prerecorded media, encoder and other workload before and after changing priority; otherwise, you may not know what caused a difference. A single smooth session is not proof that a setting will ensure uninterrupted operation over a longer run.

- If raising priority appears to help, repeat the comparison before keeping it.
- If it does not help, restore Normal rather than escalating to High without a specific reason.
- If the stream still fails, investigate the failure itself instead of assuming the priority label is responsible.
Troubleshooting: when changing priority does not solve the problem
OBS still stops sending the stream
Process priority does not guarantee that a stream stays connected or resumes after YouTube drops it. Treat a disconnect as a separate reliability problem; this setting alone does not provide automatic recovery.
Changing to Above Normal makes no visible difference
That result does not establish that OBS needs a higher setting. Return to Normal unless a repeatable comparison shows a benefit.

You are considering High to prevent an outage
The current interface offers High, but the reviewed official material does not specifically recommend it for a nonstop prerecorded YouTube stream. The legacy help discusses raising priority in the context of CPU-intensive encoding; it does not make High an uptime guarantee.
You cannot find the same labels
Check that you are in OBS Studio’s Settings > Advanced > General area and that you are using the Windows interface. The cited label list is the current English interface; a different language or version may present labels or layout differently.
