Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Windows Update and OBS solve different parts of the problem: use Windows active hours and scheduled restarts to choose when maintenance happens, then configure OBS to launch and start streaming after a reboot. Because a full recovery depends on Windows sign-in, OBS, and YouTube event settings, rehearse the whole sequence on your own PC rather than assuming it will resume unattended.
Separate update scheduling from stream recovery
A Windows restart can interrupt a fireplace stream. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting when you usually use the PC, while a scheduled restart lets you choose a more suitable time when an update requires one. Neither setting permanently prevents restarts. OBS’s automatic reconnect, meanwhile, addresses a lost connection while OBS is running; it does not itself launch OBS after Windows reboots.
The steps below assume a Windows PC running OBS and sending an encoder stream to YouTube. Other streaming software or destinations may have different controls.
Choose a maintenance window in Windows
- Set active hours. Open Windows Settings and go to the Windows Update screen. Find the active-hours control and set the period when a restart would be disruptive. Names and available options vary by Windows version and device-management policy, so use the current controls on your PC.
- Schedule a required restart. When Windows Update indicates that a restart is needed, use its restart scheduling option to pick a time when an interruption is acceptable. If the channel has an audience, account for the planned outage.
- Pause only when you need a short deferral. Windows Update offers a pause control, but it is temporary; updates cannot be stopped indefinitely and eventually need to be installed. Do not treat pausing as a permanent way to protect a stream.
Microsoft notes that a PC may occasionally need to restart to finish installing updates. Active hours are a scheduling aid, not a promise that Windows will never require a restart. See Microsoft’s active-hours guidance and the Windows Update FAQ.

Configure OBS to launch after Windows starts
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter that can automatically start streaming when OBS launches. This is separate from Windows Update scheduling: it attempts to restore streaming after OBS is started, but does not guarantee that Windows will start the right user session, that every source is ready, or that YouTube will accept the stream.
- Confirm OBS works manually first. Open the intended OBS profile and scene, check the video and audio sources, and verify that the correct YouTube destination is selected. Resolve any prompts or missing-source errors before automating launch.
- Add the launch parameter. OBS’s Windows launch guide describes adding
--startstreamingto the OBS shortcut’s target. Follow the current official instructions for your installation and preserve the existing executable path and any existing arguments. - If using Task Scheduler, set the working directory. OBS specifies that a scheduled-task launch should set “Start in…” to the folder containing
obs64.exe. The exact path depends on where OBS was installed; do not assume a path copied from another computer. - Test the actual reboot route. Restart the PC deliberately, sign in as the account that owns the OBS setup, and check whether the task or shortcut route launches OBS and starts the intended stream. A launch parameter does not by itself specify every Windows task trigger, permission, or sign-in condition.
See the OBS launch-parameters guide for the supported parameter and Windows launch guidance.

Use OBS automatic reconnect only for connection drops
If OBS remains open but loses its connection, its automatic reconnect control may help it reconnect. Find it under OBS Settings → Advanced and review the reconnect options for your setup. It is not a reboot-recovery setting: after a full Windows restart, OBS must be launched again before reconnect behavior can apply. OBS documents the setting in its Advanced settings overview.
Check YouTube’s encoder and event settings
- Verify the stream destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream and the encoder connection details: stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it, send it to viewers, or include it in screenshots.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop controls for supported live stream settings. Confirm that the selected behavior suits your event and that the event is available when OBS starts. Reusing stream settings also copies those selections, so check them when creating or reusing a setup.
- Check the stream after OBS launches. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and that the stream health indicator and preview look right before relying on public playback.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guide and live stream settings guidance. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; this is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that a stream will recover after a restart.

Rehearse the entire recovery sequence
OBS recommends testing before a stream, and YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. For a 24/7 channel, test under the same conditions you intend to rely on:
- Use the intended Windows account, OBS profile, scene, audio sources, and YouTube event.
- Confirm that Windows Update’s planned restart is followed by the expected sign-in and OBS launch behavior.
- Check that the fireplace video and audio are present in OBS, then verify YouTube’s preview and stream health.
- Use another device to confirm the expected public playback. Do not assume a successful local OBS launch means viewers can see the stream.
See OBS’s pre-stream guidance and YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting and stream-health guidance. These checks reduce uncertainty, but neither platform guarantees unattended recovery for every Windows, account, source, network, and event configuration.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
- Windows restarted but OBS did not open: Check how the launch was configured, the Windows task trigger and permissions, whether the intended user session starts, and the task’s “Start in…” directory. Re-test while signed into the same account used for the OBS setup.
- OBS opens but does not start streaming: Confirm that
--startstreamingis present in the launch route actually being used, and that OBS opens the correct profile and destination. Test manually before repeating the reboot test. - OBS says it is streaming but YouTube has no feed: Check the stream URL and key in the intended event, confirm the key has not changed, and inspect YouTube’s stream preview and health status. Never expose the key while troubleshooting.
- The feed reaches YouTube but is not public: Check that the intended event is active and review its auto-start/auto-stop selections. Encoder connection and event availability are distinct parts of the setup.
- Video or audio is missing after reboot: Inspect the OBS scene and source status, then verify that the files or devices those sources need are available to the signed-in account. Rehearse with the actual scene rather than a simplified test scene.
- The stream drops while OBS stays open: Review OBS’s automatic reconnect settings and the network connection. Reconnect settings do not replace boot-time OBS launch.
Or let it run in the cloud
