How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Running on a Raspberry Pi During Indian Monsoon Outages

A Raspberry Pi stream survives a power cut only when the Pi, video input, network equipment, and internet connection all remain available. Plan and test the complete chain.

A Raspberry Pi stream can stay live through a local power cut only if the whole chain stays up: the Pi and its video input, the router and modem or ONT, and a working internet connection. Use a model-appropriate power supply, put every essential device on backup power, choose stream settings that fit measured upload capacity, and test power and network failures separately. A Pi-only battery cannot keep a stream live if the network equipment loses power or the ISP connection fails.

What has to stay online for the stream to survive?

Think of the stream as a chain, not a Pi with a battery. The video must reach FFmpeg, the Pi must encode or relay it, and the network must carry it to YouTube. A failure anywhere in that path can end the stream.

  • Video path: the Pi, its boot and media storage, and any camera, capture device, USB storage, or other input the stream needs.
  • Power path: a suitable supply for the Pi and backup power for every required peripheral.
  • Network path: the router, modem or ONT, any switch, and the ISP connection. A battery powering only the Pi does not keep these online.
  • Streaming path: FFmpeg, valid YouTube stream credentials, and YouTube Live accepting the incoming feed.

There is no single UPS size or India-wide internet-provider recommendation that can be inferred from the title. Runtime depends on the actual connected load and usable battery capacity; internet continuity during a local outage depends on the service and infrastructure at your address.

How do I keep my YouTube live stream running during a power cut?

1. Inventory the complete setup

Write down the exact Pi model and every powered component the stream needs: video source or capture device, storage, fans and USB devices, router, modem or ONT, and switch. Note which devices already have battery backup and which will shut off when mains power fails. This list defines what the backup system must support.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Match the Pi supply to its model

Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance recommends a model-suitable supply. Its listed recommendations are 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and 500 (a 5 V, 3 A supply limits peripherals to 600 mA), 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and 400, and 5 V at 2.5 A for Pi 3. Check the current guidance for your exact board and connected equipment before choosing a supply.

A supply’s rated maximum is not the Pi’s measured consumption, and neither number tells you how long a battery will run the setup. Connected devices and voltage loss in cables also matter. Undervoltage can destabilize a system that appears to have sufficient nominal capacity.

3. Back up the whole chain

Choose a backup arrangement that can power every essential device at the same time, including the network equipment and the video input. Check that its output and connectors suit those devices and that power transfer does not reboot them. A Pi UPS or battery may help protect the board, but it cannot preserve the stream by itself if the router, modem, ONT, switch, or camera also loses power.

Ask your ISP whether the connection serving your address is expected to remain available during a local power interruption, and check what happens to any ISP-provided modem or ONT. Backup power at your home does not establish that the provider’s equipment or wider network remains online. This is address-specific; no universal Indian provider choice or outage-runtime figure is established here.

4. Plan a safe shutdown as well as a runtime

If the UPS exposes battery status and your setup supports it, configure a clean shutdown before the battery is exhausted. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power loss can risk storage integrity. Do not treat the Pi’s ordinary power supply or an RTC battery as outage backup.

Which FFmpeg and YouTube settings should I use?

Use YouTube’s current encoder configuration as the compatibility baseline, then select a conservative resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the Pi and your measured connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; four seconds is the maximum. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

H.264 bitrate examples from YouTube’s surfaced guidance

Output Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode the chosen workload. Other supported codecs have different guidance; check YouTube’s current table for the codec and output you intend to use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure stable outbound upload during the hours the stream will run, and account for the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, rather than treating the video bitrate as the whole requirement.

If the input is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts and matches your intended output, copying the video stream rather than transcoding can avoid an extra encoding workload. If you must encode, test that exact resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate on the exact Pi model. The title does not specify the Pi, input, or content, so there is no defensible one-size-fits-all FFmpeg command or performance claim.

Set the stream key and protect it

Use the stream key for the intended YouTube Live event or persistent stream, and pass it to FFmpeg as the destination component of the RTMPS publishing URL following YouTube’s current instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not post it in a public script, screenshot, log, or support message. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration.

How do I restart FFmpeg automatically if it disconnects?

Use a supervisor such as the operating system’s service manager to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected process exit, and configure the service to start after boot if that is your intended recovery behavior. A service manager can relaunch a process; it cannot fix a missing video input, absent internet, invalid stream key, exhausted battery, or damaged storage. A process restart and a successful reconnection to YouTube are separate outcomes.

Before relying on automation, verify the service configuration and FFmpeg options on the deployed operating system. Keep the FFmpeg command, credentials handling, restart policy, and logs accessible to whoever will maintain the Pi. Avoid an unbounded rapid-restart loop: repeated failures can consume resources and obscure the underlying cause. Confirm whether FFmpeg reconnects after a temporary network interruption or instead exits; do not assume that an automatic service restart alone guarantees YouTube resumes the event.

How should I test outage and recovery?

  1. Test the normal stream first. Run the complete configuration before relying on it, and watch both the viewer-facing stream and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing the full stream and monitoring stream health.
  2. Test a controlled mains interruption. With the live test running, interrupt mains power to the backed-up equipment. Check that power transfers without a reboot or undervoltage and that the Pi, video input, router, modem or ONT, and switch stay online.
  3. Check the video and network separately. Verify that audio and video continue and that YouTube reports acceptable health. A UPS test does not establish ISP continuity; the connection may fail even while local equipment remains powered.
  4. Simulate a network drop. Check whether FFmpeg remains alive, exits, or reconnects, then confirm the actual YouTube event behavior. Do not assume a recovered encoder process means the viewer-facing stream has recovered.
  5. Test process restart and power restoration. Confirm that the supervisor relaunches FFmpeg after an exit and that the Pi returns to the intended state after a power cut. If configured, confirm the safe-shutdown behavior before the battery runs out.

These are tests to perform on your own setup, not results established for a particular Pi, UPS, ISP, or location. Record the connected load, what failed, and what recovered; use those observations to adjust backup coverage and restart behavior.

What should I check when the stream fails?

Symptom Likely area to inspect Practical check
Pi reboots or becomes unstable during the outage Supply, cable voltage loss, connected peripherals, or backup transfer Check that the supply matches the Pi model and supports its peripherals; observe whether power transfer causes a reboot.
Pi stays on but YouTube stops receiving the stream Router, modem/ONT, switch, or ISP connection Check that every required network device has backup power and determine whether the provider connection is available during the local outage.
FFmpeg exits and does not return Process supervision, input availability, credentials, or network recovery Inspect service logs and confirm the intended restart policy; test the input and stream credentials independently.
FFmpeg is running but the stream is unhealthy or unstable Upload capacity, bitrate, encoding load, or stream configuration Check YouTube stream health, measure outbound upload, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and test a lower output load if needed.
System shuts down abruptly near the end of an outage Battery depletion or missing shutdown handling Check whether the UPS reports status and whether the deployed setup can shut down cleanly before power is exhausted.
Stream does not resume after power returns Boot behavior, service startup, input readiness, or YouTube event state Test restoration separately from the initial outage; confirm the Pi boots, the input is available, the service starts, and YouTube accepts the feed.
