How to Configure OBS for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on a Low-Power Mini PC

A practical OBS setup for a continuous YouTube stream on a low-power mini PC: start conservatively, test the encoder and network, and plan separately for replays.

A low-power mini PC may be able to run a continuous YouTube stream, but no single OBS preset guarantees 24/7 stability. Start at 720p30, use a supported hardware H.264 encoder if available, keep scenes simple, and test the complete setup under sustained load before relying on it. If you need a replay as well as a live channel, plan separately: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

What settings should you start with?

Use a conservative output first, then adjust only after checking OBS performance and YouTube stream health. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists 2–6 Mbps video for 720p at 30 fps. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that your mini PC or internet connection can sustain it.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Output resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps A modest starting target for a constrained system; test before increasing quality.
Video encoder Supported hardware H.264 encoder, if available Hardware encoding moves work off the CPU, though older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate.
Rate control CBR YouTube specifies constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS.
Video bitrate Choose within YouTube’s 2–6 Mbps range for 720p30 Choose based on content motion and stable measured upload capacity, with headroom.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends two seconds and sets four seconds as the maximum.

Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current recommendations for your selected output. Use its figures as platform guidance, not as proof that a particular PC can encode smoothly or a particular connection can deliver reliably.

Configure OBS step by step

  1. Identify and update the hardware. Check the mini PC’s exact processor and graphics hardware, operating system, graphics driver, and which encoders OBS actually offers. Update OBS and the relevant graphics and network drivers using the device or component vendor’s instructions. OBS notes that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record successfully (OBS system requirements).
  2. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and use its result as a starting point, not a certification of 24/7 readiness. Set a conservative target such as 1280×720 at 30 fps if the wizard or your initial testing points to a similar output.
  3. Keep the scene collection lean. Remove sources that are not needed for the broadcast. Avoid unnecessarily large source files, animated browser layers, elaborate transitions, and other effects that add rendering work. OBS composites scenes on the GPU, so scene complexity can matter even when encoding is handled by a separate hardware block.
  4. Choose an encoder and output mode. Open Settings > Output. If you need access to encoder controls, set Output Mode to Advanced. Select a hardware H.264 encoder only if OBS lists one supported by your hardware, operating system, and drivers. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, choose CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and set video bitrate within YouTube’s current range for your resolution and frame rate. If no suitable hardware encoder is available, test the available alternative at a conservative output; do not assume a low-power CPU can sustain software encoding indefinitely.
  5. Set the YouTube destination and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a screen capture, share it, or include it in a public scene. Confirm the selected YouTube ingest settings and preview before starting the public stream.
  6. Check video and audio in the preview. In Live Control Room, verify the incoming picture and sound before you rely on the stream. Test motion as well as a static image, since moving game footage may need more bitrate than a nearly still scene. Adjust bitrate only after checking both visual quality and stable outbound capacity.
  7. Connect and test the network. Prefer wired Ethernet. Run an upload speed test and assess sustained outbound capacity rather than relying on download speed or a brief peak. Leave headroom above the configured stream bitrate, test before the full run, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend testing and monitoring.
  8. Prepare the PC for continuous operation. Set the operating system not to sleep during the stream, provide clear ventilation, and account for possible power and network interruptions. These are practical safeguards, not a certification that any particular mini PC is suitable for nonstop operation. Run a sustained test long enough to observe temperatures, OBS status, and network behavior before treating the setup as dependable.
  9. Decide how to preserve a replay. If you need a local recording, enable it only after checking available disk space and confirming that the recording file grows and remains usable. Continuous recording consumes storage and needs its own monitoring.

How to tell what is failing

Use OBS statistics and YouTube stream health to distinguish encoding or rendering overload from a connection problem. OBS lists network path, ingest connection, software, and drivers among common causes of dropped frames or disconnections (OBS stream connection troubleshooting). For encoding or rendering lag, use OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance.

Symptom Likely area What to try
Encoding lag Encoder workload or system capacity Reduce resolution or frame rate, lower scene complexity, and verify that the chosen hardware encoder is supported and active. Re-test under sustained load.
Rendering lag GPU compositing or scene sources Remove unnecessary sources and effects, simplify transitions, and reduce oversized or animated elements.
Dropped frames or disconnection Network path, ingest, software, or drivers Prefer Ethernet, check sustained upload capacity and headroom, review drivers, and monitor YouTube stream health. Test again before restarting a long run.
Video looks poor or breaks up during motion Bitrate too low for the content or unstable upload Check that the bitrate is appropriate within YouTube’s range for the selected output and that the connection can sustain it; reduce output demands if it cannot.
Preview has no expected picture or sound Scene, source, audio routing, or stream setup Check the OBS preview and audio meters, verify the selected scene and sources, then confirm the YouTube preview before going public.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?

Do not count on a complete YouTube archive from one uninterrupted 24-hour stream. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all (Archive live streams). DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours (Turn on DVR on live streams).

If viewers need replays, consider ending and restarting the broadcast in segments under 12 hours, and/or record locally with enough storage and a process to check the resulting files. Segmentation is not a guarantee of archive availability; verify the resulting YouTube archives and local recordings.

Copyright and channel policy checks

A technically stable stream is not automatically eligible to stay up or earn money. Use only footage, music, and other material you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. Repeating prerecorded video does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements; review YouTube’s current policies before building a channel around reused or repetitive material.
