If OBS freezes between files in a YouTube loop, first check whether playback has stopped in OBS itself or only in YouTube. Then verify the loop control for the source you are actually using: Loop for one file in Media Source, or Loop Playlist for a playlist in VLC Video. These settings solve different configuration mistakes; there is no single confirmed fix for every boundary freeze.
Identify the source and what is freezing
OBS has two common ways to play media in a repeating stream, and the right setting depends on which source is in your scene.
| Source | Use | Loop setting | Requirements and behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | Plays an individual media file. | Loop repeats the file after it finishes. | Supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. |
| VLC Video | Plays a playlist of media files. | Loop Playlist restarts the playlist after it runs out of files; OBS documentation lists it as on by default. | Requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documents a requirement for 64-bit VLC. |
Also note whether the media is stored locally or accessed remotely, whether every transition fails or only one particular file boundary, and whether the source is a VLC playlist or a VLC network stream. Those details help separate a loop setting problem from a problematic input or delivery issue.
Check the loop control that matches your source
For one file in Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the media source.
- In the Sources list, right-click the source and open Properties.
- Confirm the intended file is selected and enable Loop if it should repeat after completion.
- Apply the change and watch the transition in the OBS preview before relying on the YouTube output.
For a playlist in VLC Video
- In OBS, open the scene and the VLC Video source’s Properties.
- Check the playlist entries and their order, and confirm that each intended file is present.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should restart once all entries have played.
- Check Visibility Behaviour if the source can become hidden: that control determines whether VLC playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible.
If VLC Video is missing from the source options, install VLC. Match its bitness to OBS: OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not confuse nearby Media Source controls with looping
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts a file when its source is in the current scene and visible. It is not the control for repeating at the end of a file.
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source once playback finishes; it does not make the file repeat.
- Close file when inactive frees memory when a source is hidden or not on the current scene. Showing it again can require a short reload period.
Find out whether the fault is local to OBS or downstream
- Watch the OBS preview. If the media stops there, focus first on the source settings, file or playlist input, and OBS logs.
- Check audio and recording evidence. Observe the audio meter; if you are already making a local recording, check whether it also shows the freeze. A stopped source in OBS points to a different branch than a healthy local output that appears stalled only on YouTube.
- Check the encoder output directly. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the encoder and checking output directly in the encoder. If output is unhealthy there, investigate routed sources, encoder errors, and CPU load. If it is healthy there but YouTube playback stalls or looks bad, investigate the outbound internet connection and its strength.
This distinction matters: a YouTube playback problem alone does not prove that the OBS media source stopped, and a healthy-looking preview does not rule out delivery trouble.
Check performance when there are signs of a bottleneck
Look for rendering lag, dropped frames, encoder warnings, or other system-wide symptoms around the transition. OBS identifies GPU or resource bottlenecks, complex scenes, and demanding sources or filters as potential performance problems; these are general diagnostics, not proof that GPU load causes every freeze between files.

- Review the relevant OBS log for rendering or encoding problems.
- Reduce scene complexity, costly sources, or filters if the symptoms point to resource pressure.
- OBS recommends lowering media resolution to what the canvas or output requires when GPU overload is an issue.
- Do not treat a file-boundary freeze by itself as evidence that you need a new GPU.
Handle recurring or long-stream freezes cautiously
OBS forum users have reported VLC freezes, including while playing YouTube playlists and during long streams. One report is titled “VLC video source freezes after ~6 hours”; that wording describes one user’s report, not a typical failure duration or a measured statistic. Forum posts do not establish a general root cause or a confirmed universal fix.
Accordingly, do not assume that scheduled OBS restarts, larger network-cache values, or replacing the source will fix the problem. Test a change against the specific file, playlist, and stream where the fault occurs. OBS documents a 400 ms default for VLC Video network caching; that default is not a recommended cure for a freeze between files.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Where to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source stops at the end of its only file. | Media Source configuration. | Confirm Loop is enabled; do not substitute the visibility or end-of-playback controls. |
| VLC Video stops after the last playlist item. | Playlist configuration. | Check playlist entries and Loop Playlist; confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS bitness. |
| Only one transition or one file causes the stop. | That boundary and its media input. | Record which item precedes the freeze and whether the media is local or remote; use OBS preview and logs to localize it. |
| OBS preview or encoder output is frozen. | OBS source, routed inputs, logs, encoder errors, CPU load. | Determine whether the source itself stopped or the encoder cannot keep up. |
| OBS encoder output is healthy, but YouTube stalls. | Outbound connection and delivery path. | Follow YouTube’s advice to check the strength of the outbound internet connection. |
| Freeze coincides with rendering lag, dropped frames, or warnings. | System resources and scene workload. | Review logs and reduce demanding scene elements if evidence supports a performance bottleneck. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without depending on OBS and a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the video looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start the free first day.
