You can loop a rain video in OBS and send it to YouTube Live, but a single OBS session or YouTube event should not be treated as guaranteed to run or archive forever. Prepare footage and audio you have rights to use, verify your channel can livestream, enable looping in OBS, test the stream, and plan shorter sessions if keeping a replay matters.
Before you start: check eligibility and content rights
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its general eligibility guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. Check your current status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, since platform requirements can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and get-started guidance.
Use footage and sound cleared for live use
Use rain footage and audio you recorded yourself, or material whose licence clearly permits the intended livestream use. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights for live content worldwide and to follow applicable laws and regulations. Attribution by itself does not grant permission. The cited guidance does not establish India-specific licensing requirements for this particular use, so do not treat this as legal advice. Review YouTube’s livestream terms.
Build a looping rain scene in OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, use the Tools menu to launch the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test its suggested settings on the computer and connection you will actually use. OBS recommends testing settings and making a short test recording or stream; its Quick Start guide explains the setup flow.
- Create a scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the rain broadcast.
- Add the local media. In Sources, choose the plus button, select Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to your video or audio file. Resize and position the video to fit the canvas. Confirm the intended audio reaches the OBS mixer.
- Turn on looping. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so do not assume the clip repeats automatically. For a playlist, VLC Video is an alternative source; enable Loop Playlist if you use it. Check the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Check the transition between repeats. Preview the end and beginning of the clip. Listen for silence, clicks, abrupt changes, or an unintended black frame. Fix the source file or edit before going live if the loop is distracting.
Choose a resolution and frame rate the computer can sustain. OBS notes that output resolution and frame rate affect system load, and 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Rain ambience usually does not require high frame rate; test rather than assuming the hardware will hold a demanding setting. See the OBS overview.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key. If OBS presents a YouTube account connection option, the manual stream URL and key are the encoder details described in YouTube’s setup instructions.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and start streaming. Check the Live Control Room preview and wait for YouTube to show the incoming feed before making the event public or starting the broadcast.
For the exact connect-and-start workflow, follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its stream settings guidance. Keep the stream key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Test picture, sound, and stream settings before going public
- Watch the preview: Confirm the video fills the intended frame, the loop runs, and the Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Listen to the audio: Check the OBS mixer for the correct source and level. Monitor for clipping, unexpected silence, or other audio that should not be broadcast.
- Check the connection: OBS’s dropped-frame troubleshooting says instability or an unsustainable bitrate can cause dropped frames. Its guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific maximum. Test under normal household network use and lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Choose latency for the audience: YouTube offers latency options. A non-interactive ambience stream usually does not need the lowest latency; lower latency can increase buffering. Choose for the viewing experience you want, rather than selecting the lowest option by default.
- Make a short test: Check the result on another device if possible, and make a local test recording so you can inspect picture and sound independently of YouTube.
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. Ethernet can reduce instability associated with Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix ISP congestion or guarantee uninterrupted service. For further causes and fixes, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.

Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A continuous event is not a dependable way to preserve a full 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
| Choice | What it means | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| One long event | Simple continuity, but a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. | Continuous listening matters more than replay access. |
| Shorter sessions | Lets you end and restart broadcasts before they exceed the archive threshold; it requires you to manage session changes. | You want a better chance of an archived replay and clearer session boundaries. |
| Local recording backup | Provides a separate copy on your own storage; confirm the recording file is growing and that storage is sufficient. | You need a copy independent of YouTube’s archive. |
YouTube’s DVR feature can let viewers pause and rewind, but capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A long, uninterrupted ambience event can therefore trade viewer rewind and replay expectations against continuous availability. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance.

If replay matters, end and start separate broadcasts before the 12-hour mark rather than relying on one 24-hour event. Enable OBS recording if your computer has enough storage, then verify the local file is actually growing during the stream. YouTube also recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring quality, and testing failover if you use a backup encoder; a single-operator home setup need not use broadcast-grade redundancy. See YouTube’s live tips.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The rain video stops at the end of the clip: Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. If using VLC Video, check Loop Playlist. Verify the repeat before the live session.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is streaming, the selected YouTube stream URL and key match the event, and the Live Control Room is open on that stream. Replace a compromised key and update OBS.
- Dropped frames or an unstable preview: Lower bitrate to a level the connection sustains, test again, and prefer wired networking where practical. OBS suggests 75% of total upload as an initial bitrate point, not a guarantee. If the problem persists, investigate VPN or security software, network-optimization software, router or modem connectivity, cable or network-card faults, and ISP congestion; contact your ISP if local troubleshooting does not resolve it.
- The computer struggles to encode: Reduce output resolution or frame rate and retest. A higher frame rate can add system load; OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard is a starting point, not proof that a configuration will remain stable indefinitely.
- The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter events when an archive matters and keep a local recording backup.
- Viewers cannot rewind as expected: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Shorter sessions better suit viewers who expect pause and rewind.
- The stream stops during a power or internet outage: OBS depends on the local computer and its network connection. No particular connection setup or device guarantees 24/7 availability; check the cause, restore the connection, and restart the encoder if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
