You can run an ambient YouTube live stream from OBS on a Mac mini by enabling YouTube Live, connecting OBS with a stream key, choosing encoder settings your Mac and internet connection can sustain, and monitoring the broadcast. But “24/7” is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee: power, the Mac, OBS, your connection, or YouTube ingest can fail. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and DVR may be limited or unavailable.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU. OBS lists these as baseline requirements, but cautions that compatibility alone does not guarantee the Mac can handle a particular streaming workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect demand. Check OBS system requirements before choosing your output settings.
- A current OBS Studio release compatible with your installed macOS.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- An ambient visual and audio you have the rights to use. The media’s format, loop behavior, and licensing depend on your assets; verify that your permission covers continuous livestreaming.
- A stable upload connection with enough headroom for the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity before going live.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Complete channel verification and any required live-stream activation steps. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Choose the appropriate stream or scheduled event workflow for your channel. If you need a scheduled watch page, configure and test that scheduled flow; do not assume a schedule or event remains active indefinitely.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. You can use OBS’s YouTube integration or enter the URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. A stream key is a credential: keep it private and reset it if exposed. For repeated setups, YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys; confirm the current Live Control Room settings when setting up a production workflow.
- Choose auto-start and auto-stop deliberately. These controls determine how YouTube behaves when OBS begins or ends sending video. Test the intended behavior before making the stream public; these options simplify operation but do not keep the Mac, OBS, or internet connection running.

Choose OBS settings that your Mac and connection can sustain
Start with YouTube’s encoder guidance, then test the exact scene and audio you intend to broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (with a four-second maximum), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Settings and supported options can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Pick a resolution and frame rate the Mac can encode reliably, rather than choosing the highest available output by default. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats, so a higher encoder output is not a promise that every viewer receives that exact format. Run a speed test and test the full stream path; YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the same ambient visual, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate planned for the live broadcast.
- Check the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the watch page opens as expected on the channel.
- Play the stream on a phone as well as the computer. Listen for missing or distorted audio and watch for stalls, artifacts, or a frozen image.
- Observe OBS and the Mac under the representative scene load. A simple static scene may behave differently from an animated visual or a more demanding source.
- If you plan to record locally, enable the recording and verify that the file is growing and can be played back.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and possible connection problems, including security software interference. A successful test helps diagnose the current setup; it does not certify long-term uptime.
Plan for archives and DVR before choosing a session length
A single continuous broadcast is not the safest choice if you need a YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR settings for live streams. If a single continuous live session matters more than a YouTube replay, make that trade-off explicit and do not promise viewers that the full stream will be saved.
Make the setup more resilient without assuming it is fail-proof
YouTube’s reusable stream keys and auto-start or auto-stop controls can reduce repeated setup work, but they do not provide automatic recovery from every OBS crash, power loss, internet outage, credential problem, or platform interruption. Treat a 24/7 stream as a service that needs monitoring and a recovery procedure.

- Power interruption: A UPS can provide short-term power to the Mac and network equipment. Choose capacity for the actual equipment load and the runtime you need; no specific capacity is established here.
- Network interruption: Ethernet can avoid dependence on local Wi-Fi coverage, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage. A second internet path addresses a different failure mode.
- Recording loss: Local storage can preserve a backup recording. Check available space and verify the file while recording; YouTube does not specify a storage device or capacity.
- Stream interruption: Monitor stream health and have a tested procedure for restarting OBS and confirming the live event is back. Do not assume the same key, schedule, or event will remain valid forever.
Troubleshoot common failures
