How to Set OBS Audio Monitoring Without Echo in a YouTube Loop Stream

To stop OBS audio from echoing in a YouTube loop stream, leave monitoring off for audio that viewers should hear but you do not need to monitor, and remove any duplicate capture of the same device. If you need to listen privately, choose the intended monitoring device in OBS and enable monitoring only for the specific source. Keep YouTube playback from feeding back into the OBS mix.

What OBS audio monitoring does—and does not do

Monitoring is the local playback of an OBS source through a configured monitoring device. It is separate from whether that source is sent to the stream or recording. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide describes the monitor button as one that “Allows playing the audio of the source back through your monitoring device, configured in Settings.” OBS Project, Audio Mixer Guide

Mode What you hear locally What viewers or a recording receive
Monitor Off Not played through OBS’s monitoring device Normal stream/recording output remains available
Monitor Only Played through the monitoring device Muted from stream/recording output
Monitor and Output Played through the monitoring device Included in stream/recording output

OBS labels and wording can vary by version and localization; confirm the options in your installed version. The key distinction is whether the source goes to the audience, your monitoring device, or both.

Find the audio path causing the echo

Map each source before changing settings. Include the loop media source, microphone, desktop audio, capture-card audio, browser or player return, and any virtual cable or mixer. For each, decide whether it belongs in the viewer mix, whether you need to hear it locally, and how OBS captures it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Same device captured globally and in a scene: OBS warns that an Audio Input/Output Capture source can echo if the same device is also selected in Settings > Audio. Its Audio Sources guide, dated 2022-01-11, recommends disabling the global device when adding devices directly to scenes. OBS Project, Audio Sources
  • Monitoring routed back into capture: You monitor a source through a playback device that OBS also captures. The same sound can then enter the mix a second time. Check the monitoring device and Advanced Audio Properties. OBS forum discussion
  • Monitor Only on a source meant for viewers: You can hear the source locally, but it is muted from stream and recording output. This can resemble a stream-audio failure.
  • YouTube playback return recaptured: Playing the stream on the streaming computer and capturing that playback can add a delayed copy to the mix. This is a routing inference from OBS’s duplicate-capture warning, not a YouTube-specific rule.
  • Room speakers picked up by a microphone: Speakers can create an acoustic repeat through a nearby mic. Headphones can avoid that acoustic route, but they do not correct duplicate digital capture.

Set monitoring without echo: step by step

  1. Decide what the audience should hear. Identify the loop audio and any other program sources. Keep those sources on the normal stream path; do not use Monitor Only for audio that viewers must receive.
  2. Remove duplicate device capture. Open Settings > Audio and check the global devices against scene-level Audio Input/Output Capture sources. If the same physical device is active in both places, disable one capture path. OBS documents this as an echo risk.
  3. Choose the monitoring device. In OBS’s Audio settings, select the headphones or other output you intend to use. Avoid selecting a device that is also captured into the OBS program mix.
  4. Set monitoring per source. In the Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties. Leave monitoring off for ordinary program audio that should reach viewers but does not need local playback. Use Monitor Only for a source you need to hear privately but do not want in the stream or recording. Use Monitor and Output only when the source belongs in both places and the monitoring output cannot be captured again.
  5. Keep the YouTube return out of the mix. Unless playback is intentionally part of the production, mute or close YouTube on the streaming computer. To check the public stream, use a separate device or headphones and ensure its playback is not captured into OBS. This is a feedback-prevention recommendation based on OBS routing guidance, not a YouTube-specific rule.
  6. Verify the final signal. Watch the relevant mixer meters, make a brief recording or private test, and confirm the intended audio appears once in the result. OBS says its meters show peak level and that red indicates a level close to clipping. Check both source activity and the resulting mix.

Diagnose what you hear

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You hear a source twice Duplicate global and scene capture, or monitoring fed back into capture Compare Settings > Audio devices with scene capture sources; check the monitoring device and Advanced Audio Properties.
You hear the sound, but viewers do not The source may be set to Monitor Only Change it to Monitor Off if only the stream needs it, or Monitor and Output if both you and viewers need it.
You do not hear it, but the mixer meter moves Monitoring may be off or routed to a different device Check the selected monitoring device and that source’s monitoring mode.
A delayed repeat appears during a loop YouTube playback may be re-entering OBS, or the same audio device may be captured twice Stop local playback or prevent its device from entering the mix; then check for duplicate capture paths.
Echo persists after changing monitor mode The duplicate path may be acoustic or elsewhere in the capture chain Check whether speakers are audible to a nearby microphone, then review virtual mixers, drivers, and capture hardware routing.
