You can run a 24/7 forest-sounds stream from an old PC by using OBS to send a looping audio-and-visual scene to YouTube Live. Start with a still image and a conservative encoder profile, test the actual computer and upload connection, and plan for power, heat, interruptions, and local recording. An old PC’s ability to stay stable for days cannot be assumed: test before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer age of at least 16. Enable live streaming before the planned start; a new or unverified channel may not be ready immediately. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- OBS Studio installed on the PC, plus a forest recording and visual you have permission to use.
- A stable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate, and reliable power and cooling for the PC.
- Enough disk space if you intend to record a local backup. The amount depends on your recording settings and how long you want to keep it.
For an India-themed stream, the location or subject does not change YouTube’s encoder setup. The key practical questions are whether your specific connection and power supply remain stable and whether you hold the necessary rights to the recordings and visuals.
Prepare a rights-cleared forest ambience scene
Use material you can stream and archive
Use forest sounds, music, photographs, and video that you created or have licensed for the uses you plan. Check that the permission covers livestreaming and any later replay, and includes third-party music, samples, or recordings embedded in the file. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility for necessary rights on the provider.
Keep the old PC’s workload modest
A still forest image paired with ambience audio is a practical starting point because it avoids continuously encoding complex moving visuals. It is an engineering choice, not a YouTube requirement or a promise of monetization eligibility. If you use video, test it on the actual PC: a source that plays smoothly may still cause encoding load or dropped frames.

Set up the YouTube stream in OBS
- Enable livestreaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, create a livestream using the encoder workflow. YouTube recommends setting this up before the planned start so you can test the incoming feed.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream details as prompted. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Build the scene. Add the forest still or video as a visual source and your ambience recording as an audio source. Set the audio so it is clearly audible without clipping, then listen to the preview with headphones. Make sure the media source loops if the file is shorter than the planned broadcast.
- Choose an initial output profile. In OBS output and video settings, select H.264 encoding if available, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Use AAC audio where available. For an unknown older PC, begin with a modest resolution and frame rate rather than assuming it can sustain 1080p. The still-image scene can be less demanding than motion, but only a realistic test can show how your machine behaves.
- Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Start streaming from OBS, inspect the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the watch page works, and check stream health. YouTube advises testing with realistic audio and video and continuously monitoring quality; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- Go public only after the test is stable. Start the stream in YouTube Studio when ready. Keep the OBS and YouTube health indicators visible during initial operation and check the actual playback on another device.
Choose bitrate and resolution for the PC and connection
Run an upload-speed test, then leave headroom for normal network variation instead of setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best measured upload. YouTube recommends letting the platform detect resolution and frame rate unless you have a reason to use a custom stream key. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP or encrypted RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). For a static image and sound, higher frame rates add little visual benefit. Choose a resolution and bitrate the machine and connection can hold steadily. Run the stream under a realistic workload long enough to observe temperatures, dropped frames, and network variation before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.
Plan for long runtimes, interruptions, and replays
Keep the PC operating safely
Disable sleep or hibernation while streaming, confirm the PC has adequate airflow, and make sure the source files remain available locally. Check that the computer will not restart for updates or lose its network connection unexpectedly. Power failures and broadband interruptions can stop a stream; no particular Indian power-backup or broadband specification can be prescribed without knowing your location and setup. Decide who will notice a failure and how they will restart the encoder.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive a full day
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, make a local recording backup and test that OBS can record without overloading the PC. Alternatively, split the broadcast into shorter planned sessions with deliberate restarts. Details are in Archive live streams and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
An external drive can provide extra space for local recordings, but choose capacity only after estimating file size, retention needs, and the PC’s available ports. A local backup uses additional storage and should be tested for its effect on stream stability.

Understand copyright and monetization separately
Having permission to use forest sounds or visuals addresses rights; it does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy calls for original and authentic content. Its July 15, 2025 update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its inauthentic-content policy. A channel built from near-identical loops may therefore face monetization review concerns even if the material is licensed. YouTube also reviews reused content separately from copyright permission and may consider whether the creator’s contribution is clear. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: Check that livestreaming is enabled, OBS is using the current stream URL and key, and the correct stream is selected in Studio. Keep the key private and replace it if it may have been exposed.
- OBS shows rising dropped frames: OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Lower the bitrate or output profile, check the connection, and compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter with YouTube’s stream-health feedback. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Video or audio stutters: Test the same scene and media sources again; reduce visual complexity or output settings if the old PC cannot encode smoothly. Check that the source is looping and that audio is not muted or clipping.
- The stream stops after hours: Check whether the PC slept, overheated, lost power or internet, or whether OBS or the media source stopped. Resolve the underlying cause, then restart the encoder and verify the YouTube preview before returning to public viewing.
- The replay is missing: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording backup or planned shorter sessions if replay availability matters.
