If editing a playlist stops your YouTube 24/7 stream, first identify what the playlist actually is: an OBS VLC Video source’s list of local media files, or an HLS .m3u8 manifest. They use different reload rules. OBS documents playlist playback for VLC Video but does not promise that external edits will hot-reload without interrupting the current item. For HLS, preserve the manifest’s references to available, continuous segments. Do not treat YouTube’s HLS-ingestion requirements as a fix for an OBS local-file playlist.
Identify which playlist your stream uses
In OBS, inspect the source that plays the video and the file you edited. A playlist can mean a list of local video paths used by a VLC Video source, or an HLS media playlist—a text manifest, usually ending in .m3u8, that refers to streaming segments. A file is not HLS merely because someone calls it a playlist.

Safely update an OBS VLC Video playlist
OBS’s built-in VLC Video source supports playlists, but its documentation does not establish an atomic hot-reload procedure that preserves the current playback position after an external file edit. If changing the list restarts the current item or interrupts the output, do not assume that repeatedly editing the same file will be safe.
- Save a rollback point. Save your OBS scene collection and make a copy of the existing playlist before testing changes.
- Confirm the source. In the OBS Sources list, inspect the source’s properties and establish that it is VLC Video, rather than Media Source or another plugin. VLC Video is the built-in source that supports a list of media items.
- Make the edit in a test setup first. Check whether the changed list is picked up and whether the current video restarts. Test with the OBS version and plugins used in production; the available documentation does not specify a universal live-reload sequence.
- Choose a controlled change if the current source interrupts. Schedule the edit for a transition where a restart is acceptable, or use a playlist implementation that explicitly claims to accept edits during playback. Avoid relying on an undocumented reload shortcut for a live channel.
- Verify the output after changing it. Confirm that the intended item plays and that the YouTube broadcast is still receiving video. If the stream was interrupted, restore the saved playlist or scene collection before trying a different method.
Consider a playlist plugin only after testing compatibility
The third-party OBS Media Playlist Source plugin listing says it allows playlist edits without restarting the video, including when entries are reordered: OBS forum resource: Media Playlist Source. That is the plugin author’s feature claim, not an OBS built-in guarantee. Check its stated compatibility against your installed OBS and related components, preserve your current scene collection, and validate the behavior in a test stream before depending on it for a 24/7 broadcast. The available information does not establish compatibility with every version or setup.

Safely update an HLS manifest
HLS is different from an OBS list of local files. A media playlist describes segments that a client retrieves over time; clients reload it to discover new segments. RFC 8216 also calls for continuity checks after reload. The precise safe-update procedure depends on the server and player, so do not assume that replacing or editing a live manifest is harmless.
- Keep every segment referenced by the active manifest available to the client that may still request it.
- Do not remove or rename segments still referenced by the playlist unless you understand how your server and player handle that change.
- Check that a new manifest and its segment references remain consistent; a client cannot play a segment that is missing or unavailable.
- Identify which system generates and serves the manifest. The correct fix may be changing its output behavior, not manually editing the live file.
If YouTube receives HLS directly
YouTube’s published HLS ingestion requirements apply only when your encoder sends HLS to YouTube—not when OBS plays a local VLC playlist. For YouTube HLS ingestion, use TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. See YouTube Live encoder settings. These are ingestion constraints, not a remedy for a local OBS source restarting after a playlist edit.

If FFmpeg creates the playlist
Inspect the FFmpeg HLS playlist type and output mode before editing its manifest while it is live. FFmpeg documents EVENT playlists as append-only and VOD playlists as unchanging. If the selected mode conflicts with the update you want, adjust how the output is generated rather than manually changing the live file. Consult the FFmpeg HLS format documentation for the relevant options.
