Configure the source to reconnect, prepare a local backup track or playlist, and make the player retry after a stalled or failed request. If a listener is completely offline, live audio cannot reach them; only audio already buffered or saved locally can continue playing.
Find the failed link first
A typical internet-radio setup has three parts: a source that generates or plays the sleep audio, a server that relays it, and a listener’s player. An outage can affect any connection between them, and a fix for one link does not repair the others.
- Source to server: The encoder or streaming process cannot reach the relay. The source needs to retry its connection while remaining running.
- Server to listener: The relay is unavailable or cannot deliver the stream. A source-side retry alone may not resolve a server outage.
- Listener to network: The listener’s device cannot reach the server. Upstream audio may still be live, but the player cannot receive it until connectivity returns.
When diagnosing a problem, check the source process and logs, whether the server mount is available, and what the listener’s player reports. Test each link separately where possible.
Configure the source to reconnect
Liquidsoap sending to Icecast
Liquidsoap’s development documentation for version 2.5.x says its Icecast output retries three seconds after a failed or closed connection and continues retrying while the script is running. That is documented behavior for that version, not a guarantee for every Liquidsoap release or streaming client. Check the documentation for the version you deploy.

The same documentation gives a five-second default for connection_timeout, which controls how long connection establishment waits, and a 30-second default for timeout, which controls read and write waiting. These defaults affect connection behavior; they are not a universal outage-recovery schedule. Liquidsoap also offers connect, disconnect, and error callbacks for logging state changes or controlling retry behavior. An error callback can choose a delay or stop retries, so avoid stopping retries if unattended recovery is the goal.
Ices 2
Ices 2 has its own configuration options: reconnectdelay, reconnectattempts, and retry-initial. These belong to Ices 2; do not copy them into Liquidsoap configuration. Pay particular attention to reconnectattempts: a configured attempt limit can cause the instance to stop retrying before service returns. Select a limit deliberately and verify how the deployed version behaves.

There is no universal best retry interval established for every client, host, or outage. Whatever client you use, keep the streaming process alive and inspect its logs to confirm it is retrying rather than exiting.
Keep a backup sleep-audio source ready
A reconnecting source can restore the feed after it reaches the server again, but a separate fallback can prevent the programme from becoming unavailable when the primary audio source fails. In Liquidsoap, fallback can switch to another available source. For sleep audio, that could be a locally accessible ambient loop or prepared backup playlist.

Liquidsoap’s mksafe operator instead makes an unavailable source safe by supplying silence. That can be useful when silence is preferable to an error, but it is not an audible sleep-sounds backup. Choose based on what listeners should hear if the primary source disappears.
A source-side fallback only helps while the generator can still reach the streaming server. It cannot make the server reachable to a listener whose own internet connection is down.

Make a browser player retry
A custom browser player can use media-element events to detect trouble and present a clear status. The browser documentation describes stalled when fetching stops, waiting when playback is waiting for data, and error when a resource or fetch error occurs. Treat these as signals to update the player’s state and consider retrying; an event does not by itself identify which network link failed.
- Listen for stalled, waiting, and error events on the media element.
- Show that playback is interrupted and that the player is attempting to reconnect.
- When connectivity appears to have returned, call
HTMLMediaElement.load()to reset the element and start source selection and loading again. - Wait for the media to become ready, then request playback and handle rejection or other failure.
- If playback cannot start automatically, ask the listener to press Play. Browser autoplay policies or a continuing network problem can prevent audible resumption.
load() aborts ongoing operations and begins loading again; it does not guarantee that every browser will resume audible playback automatically. A player based on Media Source Extensions has extra responsibilities: the application manages segment fetching and buffering, so it must also handle failed chunk requests and re-establish its media pipeline. The right recovery implementation depends on the player and topology.

Use segmented delivery only if it fits
Liquidsoap can produce HLS files for a web server to serve. HLS and DASH use rolling playlists of segments, and adaptive variants can switch to a lower bitrate when bandwidth degrades. That can help with a weak or inconsistent connection, but it cannot deliver new audio while a listener has no connection at all.
The Liquidsoap book illustrates a playlist containing about the last minute of audio split into two-second segments. Those figures are an example, not a universal segment duration, buffer guarantee, or recommended setting. Choose segment and playlist behavior for the actual delivery setup rather than treating the example as a default.
What can continue during a total outage?
If the listener loses all internet access, the server cannot send fresh live audio. A player may continue only for the duration of audio already buffered; the buffer’s usable duration depends on the player and stream, and no universal size is established here. For longer offline listening, provide a local audio copy or playlist on the listener’s device. A server-side backup source and adaptive delivery do not replace that local copy.
Test recovery before relying on it
Validate the actual source, server, and player rather than assuming a retry setting guarantees seamless playback. Disconnect each relevant link in turn, restore it, and observe the source logs, server mount, browser events, and whether sound returns. The correct test depends on your software and topology; the source, host, browser, and likely outage duration are not specified by a single universal recipe.
- Confirm the source process stays running and logs renewed connection attempts.
- Check whether the server still exposes the expected stream mount.
- Observe how the player responds to stalled, waiting, or error states and whether it needs a listener gesture to resume.
- Test what listeners hear if the primary source is unavailable: backup audio, silence, or a failed stream.
- Simulate a listener-side outage separately to establish what the buffer covers and when a local copy is needed.
