To replace the video in an active 24/7 YouTube stream, switch the media source in the encoder or cloud playout service that is sending the feed. Keep that encoder connected to the same YouTube event. YouTube’s documented setup uses a stream URL and stream key to receive an encoder’s feed; its cited help pages do not describe a universal Studio button for swapping a file midstream. Exact controls depend on your encoder or service.
Before you switch the source
First identify what is producing the video viewers currently see: software running on a computer, a standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service. YouTube describes software and standalone hardware encoders and lists OBS as open-source streaming software. The replacement happens in that production system, not by changing stream metadata in YouTube Studio.
- Prepare the replacement file or playlist in the encoder or playout service.
- Check that its format, audio, and aspect ratio fit the current production settings. YouTube’s cited instructions do not specify file-preparation requirements for this exact midstream operation, so check your encoder’s documentation.
- Keep the current YouTube event, encoder connection, server URL, and stream key in place while changing the source.
Replace the video without ending the event
- Locate the active output. In your encoder or playout service, find the scene, source, playlist, or scheduled media item feeding the YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow has the encoder send content to YouTube using its server URL and stream key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Load the replacement. Add or select the new video or playlist in the encoder or service. Follow that product’s current instructions; YouTube does not prescribe vendor-specific clicks for changing an encoder source.
- Switch the outgoing source while the feed stays connected. Use the encoder or playout controls to make the replacement the active output. Check the encoder preview, then verify picture and sound on the public stream. This is the practical consequence of YouTube’s encoder-based feed workflow, not a guarantee that any particular product will make a seamless transition.
- Do not stop the encoder’s content transmission if the event must remain live. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Stopping transmission can end the current stream rather than merely changing the video source.
What YouTube Studio can—and cannot—change
The stream key and server URL route the encoder’s feed to YouTube. Editing stream details or metadata changes information about the event, not the media input being sent by the encoder. YouTube documents metadata editing in stream settings, but the cited help pages do not document a universal live-video file-swap command in Live Control Room. See YouTube live stream settings.
Live Redirect is not a substitute for a midstream source change: it sends viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends. YouTube also describes DVR as letting viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream; its cited guidance does not establish how DVR playback positions behave when the encoder changes sources. Do not assume every viewer will encounter the replacement at the same point in playback. See Use Live Redirect and Enable DVR on live streams.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose where to manage the video source
The key distinction is who operates the encoder and where it runs. The available YouTube sources establish these categories, not a head-to-head performance ranking.
| Approach | Where you switch the source | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder, such as OBS | In the software running on your computer | You control the local sources, but must manage the computer, files, encoder session, and internet connection. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | In the encoder’s own controls or associated production system | May fit an existing production setup. The cited YouTube material does not establish that buying hardware is necessary for this task. |
| Cloud playout service | In the service’s hosted media or playlist controls | Can avoid relying on a dedicated PC at home. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos; confirm its current features and pricing with the provider. |
For a service specifically built to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it runs continuously from the cloud, accepts uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Plan for archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish the archive outcome for every longer broadcast, so do not assume a 24/7 event will be preserved as one complete replay. If an archive matters, check YouTube’s current live-stream guidance and your event’s archive status rather than relying on the under-12-hour rule: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshooting a source change
- The event ended: Check whether the encoder stopped sending content. YouTube identifies stopping encoder transmission as the way to end a stream. Reconnect only if you intend to start or resume an event; do not expect a source change to preserve an event after its feed has been stopped.
- The old video is still showing: Confirm that the replacement was made the active output source, not merely added to a scene or playlist. Check the encoder preview and the public stream.
- There is picture but no sound, or the aspect ratio looks wrong: Compare the replacement’s audio and aspect ratio with the current production settings, then consult the encoder or playout service’s file and output requirements. YouTube’s cited material does not specify settings for this particular transition.
- The encoder preview changed but the public stream did not: Confirm that the encoder is still sending to the intended YouTube event using its stream URL and key, and allow for the public player’s delay before diagnosing a failed switch.
- You want viewers to move to a different stream: Live Redirect can hand viewers off after the current stream ends; it does not replace the source inside the active event.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. To try it, start your StreamNeo free day.
