First find out which part failed: FFmpeg may have exited, the playlist or its media segments may be unreachable, or FFmpeg may still be running without sending a usable feed to YouTube. Save the error logs before restarting, then check the input, output credentials and YouTube preview in that order. An active FFmpeg process alone does not prove the devotional stream is reaching viewers.
What failed: FFmpeg, the playlist, or YouTube delivery?
Do not begin with repeated restarts. A restart can bring a stream back, but it can also obscure the error that would tell you whether the cause is a playlist outage, a bad key, a VPS resource problem or a command that has reached the end of its input.
- Check the service state. Replace
YOUR_UNITwith the systemd service name used on your VPS:sudo systemctl status YOUR_UNIT --no-pager - Capture recent logs before taking action.
sudo journalctl -u YOUR_UNIT -n 100 --no-pager
If FFmpeg is not managed by systemd, inspect the log file or terminal output configured for that process instead. - Classify what you see. Look for a process exit or signal, repeated restarts, input or segment-fetch errors, DNS/TLS/network failures, YouTube output errors, authentication or key errors, resource exhaustion, or a normal end-of-file message.
- Check host-level symptoms. If FFmpeg exited unexpectedly, inspect available disk space, memory pressure, kernel or out-of-memory messages, and the service’s restart history. These checks help separate an FFmpeg/configuration issue from a VPS resource problem.
An Indian VPS is not, by itself, evidence that the cause was the server’s location. Check the VPS provider’s status and the server’s own network and service logs before attributing the interruption to a regional route or outage.
How to restore the playlist input
Test the playlist and the media it references
Check the playlist URL from the VPS, not just from your personal computer. For an HTTP(S) URL, a basic request can show whether the server can reach it:

curl -L --max-time 15 -o /dev/null -w 'HTTP %{http_code}n' 'PLAYLIST_URL'
Replace PLAYLIST_URL with the actual URL. This check does not prove that every media segment is available. If the playlist is HLS, inspect its contents and verify that the referenced segment URLs also resolve from the VPS. Check for expired signed URLs, authentication requirements, DNS problems, TLS errors, HTTP errors, and whether the source has simply reached its end.
Do not paste a signed playlist URL into a public ticket: it may grant access to the source. Redact it, along with stream keys and other credentials, before sharing logs or command output.
Use reconnect options only for supported HTTP inputs
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_on_http_error. Retry count and delay limits can also be configured with options such as reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_max, and reconnect_delay_total_max. For an endless or live HTTP source, reconnect_at_eof can treat end-of-file as an error; reconnect_streamed enables retries for streamed, non-seekable input.

These are HTTP protocol options, not a universal repair for every playlist format, authentication problem or broken source. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the options with ffmpeg -h protocol=http and consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. Put input-specific options before the corresponding -i input in the command, and verify their placement for your exact input and build. Bound retries and delays to suit the source; unbounded retries can leave a failed job waiting indefinitely.
Check the YouTube output URL and stream key
Open YouTube Live Control Room and compare the current stream URL and key with the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password/address: it identifies where the feed goes and allows YouTube to accept it. If the key changed, update the VPS configuration. If you believe it was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the service’s stored secret as well.
Use the exact ingest URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted RTMP-over-TLS/SSL option; confirm that your FFmpeg build and command support it before switching protocols. Do not rotate a key casually without also updating the running service. Keep it out of screenshots, command examples, world-readable unit files, logs and public support requests.
YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains stream keys, and Encrypt your stream using RTMPS explains the encrypted connection. If the encoder reports a startup or key error, YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance also advises checking the key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder if the key is reset.

Restart FFmpeg safely when the process has exited
If the logs show that FFmpeg exited, a service manager can launch it again on qualifying failures. For systemd, Restart=on-failure is a common policy for a long-running job; the systemd service manual says the default, Restart=no, disables automatic restart. Add a deliberate delay and rate limits appropriate to the job so a broken command does not produce a tight restart loop.
A minimal unit pattern, assuming you already have a protected script containing the correct FFmpeg command, is:
[Unit]
Description=YouTube devotional playlist stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg-stream.sh
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s

This is a template, not a drop-in unit for every VPS. Replace the script path, use the service name and paths for your distribution, and choose a restart delay and start-rate limits appropriate to the job. Protect the script and any environment file that contains credentials so other users on the VPS cannot read them. After editing a unit, reload systemd’s configuration and start or restart the service using the correct unit name; confirm the result in its journal.
Automatic restart addresses a process that exits. It does not repair a bad playlist URL, expired authentication, revoked key, unsupported FFmpeg option, exhausted disk or memory, or a command that exits successfully at end-of-file. If restarts keep repeating, stop treating the restart count as recovery and fix the underlying error first. See the systemd service manual for restart behavior and its conditions.
Verify the stream from encoder to viewer
- Confirm the service is stable and the FFmpeg logs show continuing input and output activity, rather than merely a process that remains alive.
- Open the intended event in YouTube Live Control Room. Wait for the preview and inspect the displayed stream-health status and messages.
- Check the event’s intended privacy setting, then open the watch page as a viewer and confirm both picture and audio play.
- If the preview is missing, return to the output URL, key, protocol and VPS egress checks. If the preview exists but playback is poor, compare actual outbound capacity and bitrate stability with the stream’s settings and YouTube’s health indicators.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, checking the preview, and verifying that the live event is accessible. Its guidance is in Streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

| Setting or check | What to use | Why it matters during recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Codec and resolution | Match the selected YouTube guidance to the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send. | A bitrate intended for another combination may be unsuitable. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 options in its encoder guidance. |
| Rate control | YouTube’s standard guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR). | Stable output helps you distinguish an ingest or capacity problem from changing encoder output. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube’s standard guidance recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. | Check the encoder’s configured interval against the stream settings expected by YouTube. |
| Upload headroom | YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% spare capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. | This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee for a particular VPS route or a measured outage threshold. |
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance for the applicable combination. During troubleshooting, compare the configured bitrate with reliable outbound capacity from the VPS; raising bitrate when egress is already unstable can make delivery less reliable.
Check devotional content rights before relaunching
Before restoring a loop, confirm that you have the rights or permission needed to livestream every recording, song, performance and visual in the playlist. Replaying a recording continuously does not itself grant those rights. A stream that technically reaches YouTube can still face a content or rights problem, so treat the technical fix and the content check as separate tasks. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist is a free tool for reviewing that question.
Troubleshooting: symptom, likely layer and next check
| Symptom | Likely area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Service is inactive or repeatedly restarting | FFmpeg exit, invalid command, resource exhaustion or a persistent input/output error | Read the journal and FFmpeg stderr first; check exit status, restart history, disk and memory before starting it again. |
| FFmpeg is active but input does not progress | Playlist, referenced segment, DNS, TLS, authentication, expired URL or end-of-file | Request the playlist from the VPS, inspect referenced segments, and use only supported, bounded HTTP reconnect behavior where applicable. |
| Input works but YouTube preview is absent | Output URL or protocol, key, encoder support, firewall or outbound network | Compare the exact URL and current key in Live Control Room, check RTMPS support and VPS egress, then read YouTube’s displayed message. |
| Preview appears but playback or health is poor | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, unsuitable bitrate, or missing/poor audio or video | Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, confirm both audio and video streams are present, and compare bitrate with stable VPS egress. |
| Service keeps restarting without recovering | Automatic restart is relaunching a persistent failure | Use the latest logs to identify the same recurring error; fix the URL, key, command, resource issue or unsupported option before allowing another cycle. |
