How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Stream That Uses Too Much CPU on a VPS

Find out whether FFmpeg is re-encoding unnecessarily, then reduce filters, preset load, resolution, frame rate, or outputs with measured tests.

High CPU use usually means FFmpeg is decoding and re-encoding video, applying costly filters, or producing multiple outputs. First check whether the stream can use streamcopy (-c:v copy) without changing the video. If it needs resizing, overlays, deinterlacing, frame-rate conversion, or another video transformation, encoding is necessary; then test a faster supported encoder preset or reduce unnecessary work one change at a time.

Find what is consuming CPU

Before changing the command, record the FFmpeg version and build, the VPS CPU allocation, source codec, resolution and frame rate, selected video encoder and preset, video filters, audio processing, and number of outputs or renditions. Compare CPU use with a representative run rather than assuming a setting will help. Do not include your YouTube stream key in logs, screenshots, command examples, or support posts.

The central question is whether FFmpeg must re-encode video. FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding a stream and encoding it again, and advises using streamcopy when transcoding is unnecessary. Encoding can be computationally expensive and lossy. See the FFmpeg streamcopy documentation.

Can you avoid re-encoding?

Try streamcopy only when the source is suitable

If the source is already encoded in a format compatible with your intended YouTube ingest and you do not need to transform the video, test -c:v copy. Streamcopy passes the encoded video packets through instead of decoding and encoding them, which can reduce video-encoding work substantially. It is not universally compatible: suitability depends on the source codec, container and ingest requirements.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep encoding when the video must change

Streamcopy cannot resize, add overlays, deinterlace, convert frame rate, or apply other video filters that require processing decoded frames. If your workflow needs one of those operations, retain video encoding and focus on reducing the work it performs.

Reduce encoding work without guessing

  1. Test a faster preset supported by your encoder. Preset names and behavior depend on the chosen encoder and FFmpeg build. A faster preset can reduce encoding work, but may compress less efficiently or deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. Check the installed encoder’s help and compare output quality and CPU use on your VPS. The FFmpeg codec documentation describes codec-specific options; the online documentation is regenerated nightly, so it may not match an older installed build.
  2. Remove unnecessary filters. Review each video and audio filter in the full command. Simplify or remove operations that are not needed for the intended stream, then measure the difference.
  3. Reduce resolution or frame rate if acceptable. This can reduce processing demand, but changes picture detail or motion smoothness. Choose against the viewer experience you need, available CPU, and YouTube’s ingest guidance below.
  4. Remove duplicate outputs or renditions you do not need. Each independent output can add work. Confirm which outputs are required before removing one.
  5. Measure thread changes rather than assuming they help. FFmpeg and encoders expose threading options, but adding threads does not guarantee lower total CPU demand and can increase parallel resource use. Change one setting at a time.

There is no supported universal preset, thread count, or guaranteed CPU reduction for an unspecified VPS and command. Hardware encoding is also not a safe assumption on a VPS: verify provider passthrough, device access, driver support, and encoder availability before relying on it.

Match the YouTube ingest settings to your stream

YouTube’s English-language live encoder help page, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, progressive scan, and two B-frames in its advanced recommendations. Follow the recommendations for your selected codec and stream rather than copying settings intended for another format. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

The table gives YouTube Help’s H.264 minimum and recommended bitrates for the listed resolution and frame rate. These are ingest guidance, not a universal bitrate target; use the applicable row and ensure the VPS has enough sustained upload capacity.

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need for a valid, sustainable stream from your VPS. Consider RTMPS as recommended by YouTube.

Use a repeatable troubleshooting process

  1. Capture a safe baseline. Note the command, FFmpeg version/build, VPS CPU allocation, source properties, encoder, filters, and output count. Keep the stream key private.
  2. Identify whether video is being transcoded. If no transformation is needed and the source suits the intended ingest, test streamcopy. Otherwise, keep encoding.
  3. Change one workload factor at a time. Test a faster supported preset, simplify filters, lower resolution or frame rate if acceptable, or remove unneeded renditions.
  4. Check ingest guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm your VPS upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate and consider RTMPS.
  5. Preflight with representative content. Include motion and audio similar to the planned stream, compare CPU use, and inspect output and YouTube stream health. Monitor YouTube’s messages during the actual event. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with similar audio and movement before going live: YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Common causes and fixes

  • CPU rises during a stream that should be a simple relay: check whether the command is encoding video. If the source is ingest-compatible and no video transformation is needed, test -c:v copy.
  • CPU remains high with encoding enabled: inspect resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, filters, audio processing, and output count. Test one adjustment at a time.
  • A copied stream fails or does not meet ingest needs: the source may not be compatible with the target ingest, or it may require a transformation. Confirm the codec and container requirements, then encode if needed.
  • CPU is lower but the stream looks worse or motion is less smooth: a faster preset, lower resolution, or lower frame rate changes the quality or cadence trade-off. Compare the output with the actual viewing goal and the matching YouTube bitrate guidance.
  • FFmpeg options do not behave as expected: encoder options vary by build and codec. Consult the installed encoder’s help and version-matched documentation rather than assuming an option from current online documentation applies.
  • The VPS cannot sustain the selected stream: check both CPU and upload capacity. The available evidence cannot establish a guaranteed fix or a particular CPU reduction without your command, provider allocation, and measurements.
