To stream from Ubuntu to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for your current event in YouTube Live Control Room, choose output settings that match YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and test from the actual VPS before relying on it. An Indian VPS location alone does not guarantee enough sustained upload capacity or a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest server.
1. Prepare the YouTube Live event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and prepare the intended stream or event.
- In its stream settings, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key currently displayed for that event. Use the event’s current values rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, support post, or command transcript. If you save it in a local environment file, restrict access to that file; if the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings.
The RTMPS URL and key are credentials for the live connection, not values that should be guessed from a generic example. Copy them exactly as shown by YouTube.
2. Check Ubuntu and the installed FFmpeg build
Ubuntu release, package source, and FFmpeg build affect which protocols, encoders, and options are available. The Ubuntu Noble ffmpeg-protocols manual documents RTMP publishing conventions, but it does not certify every installed build or combination: Ubuntu Noble ffmpeg-protocols manual.
On the VPS, first identify the release and inspect the actual binary:

Check that the protocol and encoder you intend to use appear in this output. For example, do not assume that libx264 or RTMPS support is available simply because a command uses it. Package names and enabled features can differ between Ubuntu releases and builds. If a needed capability is missing, consult documentation for your exact release and FFmpeg package before changing or replacing the installation.
3. Choose output settings from YouTube’s guidance
Select the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for the output you will actually send—not just the source file’s properties. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and use its current table for the exact output format and codec.

| Setting | Practical choice | Check before streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, if supported by your build and appropriate for the selected ingest settings | Confirm the encoder exists in ffmpeg -encoders and consult YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose the intended output format, up to 60 fps | Use the matching resolution and frame-rate row in YouTube’s current bitrate table. |
| Video bitrate | Use CBR and select a rate within the applicable YouTube recommendation | Make sure the VPS can sustain that outbound rate with headroom; the location in India does not establish capacity. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds | Set the interval relative to the output frame rate and verify the resulting stream health. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube’s stereo guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for AAC/MP3; its 5.1 guidance specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. |
| Advanced video | Follow YouTube’s guidance for square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, and one reference frame | Confirm the selected encoder supports the options before adding them to a command. |
As one example from YouTube’s surfaced table, 720p at 30 fps lists a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps for H.264 and 3–8 Mbps for AV1. Those are encoder recommendations for the specified format and codec, not a measurement of what any Indian VPS can sustain. Check the table headings and current guidance before applying a figure to another codec, resolution, or frame rate.
4. Build the FFmpeg output and test it safely
The exact command depends on the input media, desired output, installed encoders, and event settings. Assemble it only after verifying the local build and chosen parameters. In general, FFmpeg’s output destination combines the current RTMPS URL and the stream key in the form expected by the endpoint. Ubuntu’s Noble protocol manual describes RTMP publishing conventions; do not treat an example for that release as proof that another build or endpoint accepts the same syntax.

Keep the destination private: command-line arguments may be visible to other local users through process inspection, and shell history or logs can retain them. Avoid sharing terminal output that contains the key. Use a credential-handling approach suitable for your server and verify that it does not expose the secret in logs, scripts, or process listings.
- Start with a test using representative video motion and audio rather than assuming a static or silent sample proves the full configuration.
- Open the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room and check its stream health and messages while FFmpeg is sending.
- If health warnings or interruptions appear, check the selected bitrate against the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, then review codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, and audio against the current YouTube guidance.
- Repeat the test from the actual VPS and with the intended media before scheduling an unattended stream.
YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and messages during it. A provider’s Indian location is not evidence that the route to the current ingest endpoint or the sustained upload rate will suit your chosen settings.

5. Plan unattended operation only after the stream works
A successful interactive test does not by itself establish that FFmpeg will restart correctly after a process failure, server reboot, network interruption, or YouTube disconnect. For unattended operation, choose a process supervisor appropriate to your Ubuntu release and deployment, then validate its restart behavior, logs, and credential handling on your own server. The correct service configuration depends on those choices; no universal systemd unit or reconnect behavior can be assumed for every FFmpeg build and event endpoint.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than learning to operate a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
