How to Loop a Single MP4 on YouTube Live with FFmpeg

A practical FFmpeg command and YouTube Live setup for looping one MP4, with encoder settings, connection checks, troubleshooting, and a cloud alternative.

To loop one MP4 continuously into YouTube Live, put FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before -i, pace the file with -re, and send an FLV stream to the RTMP or RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.

FFmpeg command for an endlessly looping MP4

Use this as a starting template:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'

Replace input.mp4 with the path to your file. Replace the destination with the exact server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The example uses RTMPS; if YouTube supplies an RTMP URL for your setup, use that URL instead. Do not type the example placeholders literally.

  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i.
  • -re reads the file at its natural rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it. That pacing is important when using a file as a live source.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac request H.264 video and AAC audio encoding.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP-style publishing workflow.

This is a template, not a command tested against your particular file, FFmpeg build, YouTube account, or key. Your installation may not include the requested encoders, and an input without an audio stream may require different mapping or options.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. Get the destination. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. The key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your command.
  2. Check the local file and FFmpeg. Confirm the file path and that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoders you plan to use. If FFmpeg reports a missing encoder or stream, inspect the file’s audio and video streams and adapt the command rather than assuming every MP4 has the same structure.
  3. Run the command. Keep -stream_loop -1 before -i, retain -re for real-time pacing, and paste the current destination values into the output URL.
  4. Check the incoming preview. Watch Live Control Room for the preview and stream health. For a scheduled stream, YouTube instructs you to click Go live after the preview appears. Test with representative movement and audio before relying on the broadcast.
  5. Stop the broadcast deliberately. Stop the FFmpeg process to stop sending content, then use End Stream in Live Control Room as appropriate.

Choose output settings that YouTube can receive

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and currently lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its official guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport: YouTube encoder settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The template uses H.264 and AAC as broadly compatible starting choices, but your actual output must fit your file, FFmpeg build, target resolution and frame rate, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current table on its settings page rather than choosing an arbitrary bitrate. For reference, YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and at 720p30 with a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a successful stream.

If you need explicit output control, first decide the output resolution and frame rate, then match bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance. Scaling, frame-rate conversion, stream mapping, and codec options depend on the source; add them only when needed. A file’s audio/video streams, timestamps, or codec GOP behavior can affect how cleanly the loop joins. Check the preview at the transition rather than assuming every MP4 repeats seamlessly.

Troubleshoot common connection and playback failures

  • The stream does not connect: Re-copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room. Check that the protocol and destination are intact, with no omitted characters or extra spaces. If the key may be exposed or stale, reset it and replace it in the command.
  • The file races through or does not behave like a live feed: Confirm -re is present before the input, and that FFmpeg is reading the intended local file.
  • FFmpeg says an encoder is unavailable: Your build may not contain libx264 or the selected audio encoder. Use an encoder available in your build and compatible with YouTube’s current settings.
  • FFmpeg reports a missing audio or video stream: The file may not contain the stream the command assumes. Inspect the input and adjust stream mapping and audio options; do not assume every MP4 has audio.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the target resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendations. Also verify your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
  • The repeat point has a visible or audible break: Inspect the file’s beginning and end and watch the loop transition in the preview. The repeat boundary depends on the file and encoding details; this command does not guarantee a seamless join.

Copyright, reused content, and stream archives

Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before going live. Repeating content also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization: YouTube applies its policies to the channel and content, not merely to the encoder command.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer; stop and manage the stream with that limit in mind. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
