For a fixed sequence of video files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can present a prepared playlist as one input and send it to a YouTube broadcast. That does not guarantee that editing the playlist during a live stream will switch to new clips: live list changes and seamless input cutovers are separate workflows, and the documented behavior does not establish either as reliable. Prepare and test the sequence before going live.
What “switch between playlists” can mean
Decide which behavior you need before choosing a workflow:
- Play a prepared sequence: FFmpeg reads files listed in a concat script, in order. This is the best-supported approach for a fixed playlist. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes the script and input requirements.
- Repeat that sequence: A looping option can repeat file input, but the specific example cited below is only a starting point and must be tested with your files and FFmpeg build.
- Change the list while streaming: The available FFmpeg documentation does not establish that edits to a list already being read will be noticed, when they might take effect, or whether output remains continuous.
- Cut over between active sources: This is an orchestration problem, not simply a prepared concat playlist. A process restart or ingest change may interrupt continuity; test the actual broadcast rather than assuming the cutover is seamless.
If you need a presenter-controlled, on-the-fly switch, do not treat a prepared concat list as proof that live editing will work.
Prepare a fixed playlist with FFmpeg
1. Check and order the video files
Make a list of the files in the order you want them played, and confirm that every path will be accessible to the machine running FFmpeg. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, codecs, and time bases across the listed files. It uses each file’s duration to set timestamps for the next one, so inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. Review the inputs before relying on concatenation for a continuous-looking stream. FFmpeg documents these compatibility and timestamp constraints.

2. Write the concat script
Create a plain-text script with one file entry per video. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/segment-a.mp4'
file '/media/segment-b.mp4'Replace the example paths with paths that exist on your system, and add one line for each clip in playback order. Follow FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax; the example is illustrative, not a complete command or a guarantee that arbitrary files will join cleanly.

3. Choose pacing and looping deliberately
For file-based input, a recent third-party example uses -re to pace input in real time and -stream_loop -1 to repeat it indefinitely. Its author describes the command as an untested starting point rather than a universal recipe, so validate both options with your FFmpeg build and source files before broadcasting. The example recommends testing in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
The correct encoding and output options depend on the streams in your files, whether they need re-encoding, and YouTube’s current ingest configuration. There is no one command that can be asserted here as suitable for every input set. Build the command around your actual media and target settings, then test the output before depending on it.

4. Send the output to the broadcast’s ingest details
Use the ingest address and stream name assigned for the YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s API documentation describes primary and backup ingestion addresses and the stream name; depending on the encoder, you may enter these separately or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Keep the stream key private: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or article. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.
Use the RTMPS address supplied for the broadcast when using secure RTMP ingestion. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and warns that cleartext RTMP sent to a server expecting RTMPS can time out. Read YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.

5. Validate before relying on the stream
Start a test broadcast and inspect the actual outgoing video and audio in YouTube Live Control Room. Check clip boundaries, playback order, audio continuity, and stream health with the exact files and FFmpeg build you intend to use. A looping example is not a substitute for this test, especially if uninterrupted output matters.

The concat demuxer documentation describes sequential reading of a list, but does not settle whether edits to a script already open in a running FFmpeg process will change upcoming content. It also does not establish a zero-gap method for replacing one active input with another. If you need to add selections after the stream starts, reproduce the behavior on your target version and inspect the YouTube output; otherwise, prepare the playlist before launching FFmpeg.

Switching protocols is not a shortcut to playlist switching. YouTube says RTMP and DASH ingestion cannot be mixed during a single broadcast, including switching between them. See YouTube’s DASH ingestion guidance. HLS is a separate ingest workflow with its own requirements: YouTube specifies media playlists rather than master playlists, muxed audio and video, HTTPS transport, and segment naming and sequence rules. YouTube characterizes HLS as higher latency because it sends video in segments; those requirements do not make it a simpler way to switch local FFmpeg inputs. Common problems and what to check
- Clips fail to concatenate or boundaries break: Check that the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, as required by the concat demuxer.
- Timestamp gaps or artifacts appear: Check the files’ duration metadata. FFmpeg uses durations to place the next file’s timestamps; incorrect duration information can affect the result.
- The stream times out at ingest: Confirm that you are using the RTMPS address supplied for the broadcast, rather than cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint. Verify the broadcast’s ingest address and stream name in YouTube’s broadcast setup.
- Changes to the playlist do not appear: Live edits to an already-read list are not established as reliable by the cited documentation. Prepare the sequence before launch or test the exact behavior before depending on it.
- A protocol change interrupts the broadcast: Do not switch between RTMP and DASH within the same broadcast; YouTube explicitly disallows mixing them.
- A looping command behaves differently on your system: Treat third-party command examples as starting points, not tested universal settings. Validate pacing, repeat behavior, transitions, and stream health in Live Control Room.
