Choose the right OBS source

OBS Media Sources support common audio and video formats. A VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents the repeat controls, but does not guarantee gapless transitions for every file and system, so test your playlist and listen for pauses or abrupt changes.

Prepare the recordings and clear music rights
Before adding files to OBS, identify each exact recording and the underlying song composition, then confirm that you have permission for a worldwide YouTube livestream and any archived replay you plan to keep. A recording and its composition can have different rights holders. Permission for one use, territory, or version does not automatically cover the others. YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider is responsible for having the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content.

Do not assume a devotional song is free to broadcast because it is traditional, credited in the description, or available at no cost. Check the license for the particular recording and composition. YouTube suggests considering original music, public-domain material, music used with permission, the Audio Library, Creator Music in certain regions, or a third-party licensed source; verify that the individual license covers livestream and archive use. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the licensor about allowlisting before scheduling the broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if a match remains. Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Live
- Create a scene and add your recording. In OBS, add a Media Source for a single file and enable Loop. For a sequence, add a VLC Video source, add the recordings to its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and leave shuffle off if order matters.
- Check the audio and picture in OBS. Play the source and confirm that the expected image appears and the audio reaches OBS’s output mix. Sound routing depends on the computer and setup, so verify it on your own system rather than assuming playback is audible to the stream.
- Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live and create or select a stream for encoder software. This guide covers encoder streaming; YouTube also offers mobile and webcam options. Channel verification and the absence of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days are among YouTube’s access requirements. Check Studio for the current eligibility and controls, which can change.
- Enter the stream connection details in OBS. In OBS streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. The key works like a password: keep it private and do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or public post. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains managing stream settings and keys.
- Preview and test before the public broadcast. Check the scene, audio, playlist order, and repeat behavior with a short test. OBS recommends testing before your first public stream; its Quick Start Guide covers the initial setup.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview, then start the stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the incoming preview is right and start the broadcast when ready. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- The song stops instead of repeating: Confirm that Loop is enabled on a Media Source, or Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. Check the source currently playing, not a different source in the scene.
- The playlist will not play: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Then check that the intended files are present in the VLC playlist.
- The songs play in the wrong order: Turn off shuffle in the VLC playlist and arrange the files in the intended sequence.
- The YouTube preview has no sound: Verify that the file plays, OBS’s audio meters respond, and the correct audio reaches OBS’s output mix. Check the computer’s sound routing and run another short test.
- YouTube warns, replaces, interrupts, or ends the stream: A third-party-content match may be responsible. Review the rights for the specific recording and composition, contact the relevant licensor about YouTube livestream and archive permissions, and ask whether the channel needs to be allowlisted.
- You cannot start an encoder stream: Check YouTube Studio for channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, then confirm that OBS uses the stream URL and key belonging to the selected YouTube stream.
- Your stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised. Manage the key in YouTube Studio and replace or reset it using the current controls before streaming again.
