To add captions to a YouTube live stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to Settings > Setup > Closed captions, select Embedded 608/708, and save. Your encoder must also send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data; choosing the setting alone does not create captions. YouTube also documents a separate workflow in which supported software sends captions over HTTP POSTs.
YouTube’s instructions cover live-event setup, not a special uninterrupted 24/7 caption mode. Test captions at startup, during the broadcast, and after any planned restart or session boundary before relying on them continuously.
Choose how captions will reach YouTube
YouTube documents two workflows. Choose based on what your encoder or captioning software can actually send, then verify the result in the live preview.

Set up embedded 608/708 captions
- Open the stream in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder stream you plan to use.
- Open the caption setting. Go to the stream’s Settings, open the Setup tab, and find Closed captions.
- Select the matching input type. Choose Embedded 608/708 and save.
- Configure the encoder. Select EIA-608/CEA-708 output (sometimes labelled “embedded”) and make sure the encoder is generating or receiving caption text and carrying it in the outgoing stream. Depending on the setup, an encoder may read captions from a file or encode them in real time.
- Verify the viewer experience. Check the YouTube preview and confirm captions appear and can be enabled by viewers. Monitor stream health and messages while live.
The 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow. Plan for one track rather than assuming that the standard’s maximum is available on YouTube.
Set up captions sent over HTTP
- Confirm software compatibility. Use software that supports YouTube’s HTTP POST caption workflow; YouTube’s documentation does not identify a specific vendor or guarantee support by every captioning tool.
- Open the stream’s advanced settings. In the event setup instructions, YouTube says to add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in Advanced settings for this workflow.
- Turn on closed captions and copy the ingestion URL. Enable Closed captions and copy the Captions Ingestion URL into the supported software as its instructions require. Handle this URL as a configuration value and verify it is entered correctly.
- Test before depending on it. Confirm captions reach the preview and are visible to viewers, then check the workflow again after any planned stream restart.
Follow the current labels and setup sequence shown in your Live Control Room; YouTube’s documented HTTP procedure is for live events and does not establish that caption continuity is automatic for a 24/7 broadcast.

Plan for continuous operation and restarts
A 24/7 channel may run as one long broadcast or through successive live sessions. YouTube’s caption setup guidance does not specify how captions behave across an uninterrupted session, an encoder restart, or a newly created session. Treat those transitions as points to test rather than assuming caption state or caption delivery will carry over.
- Test at the actual stream’s start, not only in an offline encoder preview.
- Confirm captions remain visible during normal operation.
- If your setup restarts or begins another live session, verify the caption setting, caption source, and delivery path again.
- Keep an eye on Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and messages while the stream is running.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one complete archive will be produced for an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. Treat archive behavior as a separate operational question from caption delivery; see YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Troubleshoot captions that do not appear
