How to Set Up a YouTube Live Stream That Plays Videos in Random Order

Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source to shuffle local video files in a YouTube live stream, then connect the encoder through YouTube Studio and test the preview.

To play videos in shuffled order on a YouTube live stream, create a playlist in OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source, enable Shuffle Playlist, and connect OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Studio. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the last file. OBS describes shuffle as randomizing playlist order; it does not specify exactly when or how often that order is reshuffled.

Before you set up the playlist

  • Check live-stream access. Your channel must be verified and eligible to stream. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube also requires live streamers to be at least 16 and says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Prepare local video files. Choose the videos you want OBS to play and make sure you have the rights to broadcast them. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube warns that a live stream can be terminated after copyright strikes, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
  • Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video Source is available when VLC is installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well; OBS specifies matching architecture for this source.

Create and shuffle a playlist in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene that should contain the video playlist. If needed, create a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. In the source’s properties, add the local video files to its playlist. Check that the files appear in the intended list before proceeding.
  4. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the files’ playback order. Enable Loop Playlist if you want the source to start again after it reaches the end of the list.
  5. Select OK to save the source settings. Preview the scene in OBS and confirm that the video fits the canvas and plays as expected.

Shuffle means shuffled playlist playback—not a guaranteed new independent random choice after every clip. OBS’s documentation says that shuffle randomizes the playlist files but does not promise a particular reshuffle schedule or explain exactly when playback order changes. Avoid relying on a specific pattern unless you have verified it with your installed OBS version. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Create a stream in Live Control Room or select a scheduled stream. For the current workflow and labels, consult YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  2. In Live Control Room, locate the stream’s server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if that option is available, and enter or select the matching connection details. The stream key lets the encoder send video to your channel; keep it private and do not show it in a recording or screenshot.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the shuffled video is visible and audio is correct, then select Go live when the preview is ready.
  4. When the broadcast is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as directed by the current interface. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Choose settings and test stream quality

Test the encoder before the event, inspect the YouTube preview, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate; for H.264, the current guidance lists 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees that a connection can sustain the stream. Use the values for your chosen output in YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table, and ensure your upload connection has enough capacity.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC to match it.
  • The playlist will not play: Confirm that the files are accessible on the computer and that they were added to the VLC Video Source playlist. Preview the source in OBS before connecting to YouTube.
  • The list stops after the final video: Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties if playback should restart at the end.
  • The order does not appear to reshuffle between clips or loops: OBS documents shuffle as randomizing playlist order, but does not guarantee when the order is reshuffled. Do not assume a new random selection after each video.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended stream, and confirm that streaming has been enabled for the channel. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Test before going live, check OBS output settings against YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the selected codec and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain that bitrate.
  • The stream is blocked or interrupted over rights concerns: Confirm your permission for every video and audio track in the playlist. YouTube can terminate live streams after copyright strikes, and archived streams may receive Content ID claims.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud loops uploaded videos and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
