To send a vMix production to YouTube Live, either create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio and enter its stream key in vMix, or create a YouTube Live Stream Now event from vMix. Use YouTube Studio when scheduling and stream-setting control matter; choose Stream Now when you want vMix to reuse the same stream settings for recurring broadcasts.
Choose where to create the YouTube stream
vMix documents two ways to connect a production to YouTube Live. The right choice depends on whether you need a scheduled event with its own settings or prefer a recurring stream configured from vMix. The workflow options below are described in vMix’s YouTube Live overview, last updated April 9, 2025 (vMix YouTube Live overview).

For the Studio route, retrieve the stream key from your own YouTube Studio stream settings and treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or send it to anyone who does not need access. For Stream Now, follow the YouTube destination options shown in your installed vMix version.
Configure vMix and start streaming
The labels and available controls can vary by vMix release. The Help 29 User Guide documents this general workflow; use the equivalent controls in your installed version if a label differs (vMix Help 29: Streaming).

- Prepare the YouTube event. For the Studio route, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio and open its stream settings. Keep the stream key private. If you chose Stream Now, select that destination in vMix instead.
- Open vMix Streaming settings. Open the settings cog next to the Stream control. Select the YouTube destination when using the built-in route.
- Enter destination details if needed. For a custom destination, choose Custom RTMP Server and enter the server URL and stream name/key supplied by the service—in this case, the details from your YouTube event. Check the values directly against the provider’s interface rather than relying on a saved or copied value from another event.
- Choose quality and encoder. Select a quality profile that suits your production, connection, and intended audience. Pick an available encoder appropriate to your setup; no single encoder or preset is mandatory for every user. The Help 29 guide describes FFMPEG as included with vMix and supporting H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Start the stream. Start streaming from vMix, then check YouTube Studio to confirm that the incoming feed is received and the event is ready or live as expected. Follow the event’s controls in YouTube Studio to publish the broadcast to viewers.
If vMix reports an error shortly after startup, its guide recommends first checking that the destination details match those supplied by the service. Do not share a stream key while troubleshooting; redact it from screenshots or logs you send for help.
Set quality for your connection and viewers
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is correct for every vMix-to-YouTube broadcast. vMix advises choosing quality in light of internet connection speed and viewer needs. Its Help 27 quality documentation describes controls including configured bitrate, encode size, audio bitrate, and audio format, but that page is older and should not be treated as proof that every current release has identical controls (vMix Help 27: Streaming Quality).

- Choose the resolution and quality profile that match the source material and the audience’s viewing conditions.
- Make sure the connection can sustain the selected output reliably; do not treat a brief speed-test result as proof of stable streaming capacity.
- Check the current stream settings in YouTube Studio for platform-specific ingest details. The vMix documentation cited here does not establish a universal YouTube bitrate, resolution, or upload-speed recommendation.
- Confirm that the installed vMix version exposes the controls you intend to use before relying on version-specific instructions.
Understand delay and network buffering
The delay configured in vMix is a minimum wait before vMix connects and begins sending the stream, not a promise of total delay for viewers. The streaming provider and viewers’ own connections and browsers also affect how long the picture takes to arrive. The Help 27 quality documentation describes a network buffer that can be increased when maximum available network speed is unreliable; verify the control and its name in your installed version before changing it (vMix Help 27: Streaming Quality).
Troubleshoot common connection problems

| YouTube does not receive the feed | Verify that you started streaming from vMix and that you are looking at the corresponding event in YouTube Studio. Check that its stream settings belong to this event, not a different or older one. |
| Connection diagnosis is still unclear | While the stream is running, inspect View Status in vMix for technical connection information. Use those details to narrow down the issue without exposing the stream key. |
| Streaming is unstable on a variable connection | Review the selected quality against the connection available during the broadcast. If your installed version offers a network buffer setting, vMix’s older guidance suggests increasing it when maximum network speed is unreliable. |
When external capture hardware is relevant
A capture device is only needed when your production requires one to bring an external video source—such as an HDMI camera or console—into the computer running vMix. If your sources already reach vMix through another supported route, a capture card is not a prerequisite for sending the production to YouTube. Choose any capture device according to your computer’s ports, the source’s input format, and your production needs; vMix’s training catalog includes lessons about internal and external capture devices, but it is not a compatibility list (vMix training catalog).
