You can configure OBS to send a simple music stream to YouTube from a modest laptop, but no settings can promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation: the laptop, OBS, power and internet connection all have to keep working. Start with a static visual, 30 fps, a bitrate your upload can sustain, and a real test before attempting a long session. Before you start: check the channel, laptop and connection
You need a YouTube channel that can livestream, OBS Studio, music you have permission to use in a livestream, and a stable internet connection. The laptop’s processor, graphics hardware, cooling and upload speed are unknown, so treat the settings below as cautious starting points—not a guarantee that a particular machine can encode continuously.
- Enable YouTube livestreaming in advance. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for a first broadcast can take up to 24 hours. Follow the YouTube encoder setup instructions.
- Measure upload speed and leave headroom. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing before going live. Avoid choosing a bitrate that uses all of a connection’s measured capacity; other devices and fluctuations can interrupt the stream.
- Keep the visual simple. A still image or low-motion visual gives a constrained laptop less work than animation or video. OBS scenes are built from sources such as images and text; see the OBS Studio overview.
- Protect your stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not show it on screen, share it, or publish it.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility and other details for the broadcast.
- In the stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; you will enter it in OBS.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the service is listed, or enter the server information supplied by YouTube, then enter the stream key. OBS documents service/server selection and stream-key entry in its overview guide.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. Add a still image or simple visual source, then add the music source you intend to stream. Check that the audio meter responds and that the intended visual is visible in the preview.
Choose conservative video and audio settings
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
For a static or low-motion music stream, begin with 30 fps and an output resolution the laptop and connection can handle. OBS cautions that streaming at 60 fps can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps; 30 fps is a sensible first test, not a universal stable setting.
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder table gives these service-side bitrate figures (accessed 2026; the page does not state a publication year):

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a reason to force the highest resolution or bitrate. Choose an output and bitrate your connection can sustain reliably, then test them. YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance also recommends checking upload speed and stream health.
Encoder, keyframes and audio
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval longer than four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Configure OBS to match the ingest requirements and the output you chose.

OBS may offer hardware encoding through supported graphics or media hardware, such as NVENC, Intel QuickSync or AMD VCE. Use a hardware encoder only if it appears as an available option and a test shows it works reliably on your laptop. Otherwise, test the available software encoder at modest settings. OBS explains the processing trade-offs in its x264 streaming guide.
Test the complete broadcast before leaving it live
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream before scheduling a long broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
- Play the actual music source and visual loop. Listen for silence, distortion or clipping, and confirm the image is framed correctly.
- Watch OBS’s status and YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. Check both for dropped frames, connection problems or encoding overload.
- If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce the output resolution or frame rate first; if needed, lower the encoder preset. OBS’s x264 guide recommends these adjustments when the encoder cannot keep up.
- Test long enough to expose problems with heat, power, sleep settings, network stability or the audio source. A successful short test does not establish that an unspecified laptop and ISP can run reliably for 24 hours.
OBS has an automatic reconnect option in its advanced settings, but reconnecting is not an uptime guarantee. A locally hosted broadcast still depends on the laptop staying powered, OBS remaining operational and the internet connection holding.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit and music rights
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24-hour session exceeds that stated condition, and the cited guidance does not establish that the whole session will be available as one replay. If a complete replay matters, plan separate sessions or a separate recording/archive approach; check YouTube’s current behavior for streams of 12 hours or longer before relying on an archive.
Use only tracks for which you have the rights and permissions needed for livestream use. The encoder and OBS setup guides do not determine whether a particular track will trigger a Content ID claim or other channel restriction; do not assume that owning a recording or finding a track online grants livestream rights.
