You can loop a prerecorded university course on a Raspberry Pi and send it to YouTube Live, but no official documentation guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation for a particular Pi, file, network, and encoder setup. Prepare the video, configure playback and streaming, then run an extended test that includes reboot and network-recovery checks before relying on it.
Before you start: destination, access and rights
This walkthrough uses YouTube Live as its example destination because YouTube publishes encoder settings and channel requirements. If the course must stay inside a university network or behind institutional access controls, confirm that your chosen platform supports that access model; YouTube settings alone do not establish a private university deployment.
- Decide whether the stream should be public, unlisted, private, or restricted through another system. Check that the chosen option meets the university’s access and privacy requirements.
- Confirm with the university, lecturer, or recording owner that you have permission to rebroadcast the course video and audio. Platform compliance does not establish that a particular recording is cleared for streaming.
- Check that the YouTube channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the platform requirements. Its current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for the connection.
Prepare the Raspberry Pi
Boot storage and network
For a headless setup, Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance calls for boot media, a suitable power supply, and a network connection. It recommends at least 8 GB of boot storage for Raspberry Pi OS Lite, which is command-line-only, and 32 GB for desktop editions. These are OS boot-storage recommendations, not estimates for the course video: store the media separately or confirm the boot device has enough free space for both the operating system and recording.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a reliable network connection and test its sustained upload capacity. The video bitrate must fit comfortably within the available upload bandwidth; a speed test or a platform setting is not a guarantee that a home connection will remain stable around the clock.
Use a power supply for your Pi model
Raspberry Pi’s current documentation recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 400. Do not apply one model’s recommendation to every generation. Peripherals can increase power demand, and voltage loss through a removable cable can matter. Raspberry Pi’s documentation advises: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.”
Set up looping playback
Raspberry Pi OS includes VLC, and Raspberry Pi documents hardware-accelerated playback in that environment. That makes VLC a reasonable first playback option, but it does not prove that a specific Pi can decode, encode, and stream a particular course file continuously. Test the actual file and output format on the hardware you plan to use.

If you use FFmpeg, its input-loop option -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. For example, a basic looped input can be expressed as:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i course.mp4 ...
The ellipsis is intentional: the remaining output and encoder options depend on the streaming destination and whether the Pi can pass the media through or must re-encode it. Do not assume this partial command alone creates a working YouTube stream.
Configure YouTube Live encoder settings
Create or select a YouTube live stream and use its current stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or store it in a publicly readable script. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. The recommended H.264 bitrate examples are:
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The figures above are platform encoder recommendations for the listed H.264 resolution and frame-rate examples, not universal network-speed requirements. Choose an output the Pi can sustain, and leave upload-bandwidth headroom rather than matching the measured connection at its limit. If the source file is already in a compatible format, passing it through without re-encoding is a sensible first experiment; hardware-specific, end-to-end performance is not established by the platform settings.

Make the stream recoverable and test it
A process configured to restart is not the same as a stream proven to recover. Before using the setup for a course people depend on, test the whole chain—media file, Pi, power, cooling, encoder, destination, and network—for an extended period.

- Start playback and streaming, then verify in YouTube that the incoming stream is healthy and that audio and video are correct.
- Leave the setup running for a sustained trial with the exact course file, output resolution and frame rate, and network you intend to use.
- Reboot the Pi and confirm that playback and the streaming process start again without manual intervention. Check that the stream key and any required settings persist securely.
- During a controlled test, interrupt and restore the network. Confirm whether the encoder reconnects, whether YouTube receives the stream again, and whether viewers see a gap or an ended stream.
- Inspect logs after both normal operation and failures. Record the observed symptoms and recovery steps so an operator knows what to check.
Watch for overheating, power instability, storage exhaustion, playback errors, and upload interruptions during the test. The official Raspberry Pi, FFmpeg, and YouTube documentation describes useful components and settings, but does not certify 24/7 uptime for a specific Raspberry Pi course-streaming installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a stream: Check that the selected destination and stream key match, the channel is eligible to go live, and the encoder is connecting through the configured ingest protocol.
- The stream starts but drops: Check sustained upload capacity, network interruptions, power and cable stability, and encoder logs. A bitrate that nearly saturates the connection leaves little room for variation.
- Playback stutters or the Pi struggles: Test the file and chosen output locally. Reduce the output resolution or frame rate, or try compatible pass-through instead of re-encoding. Hardware acceleration in Raspberry Pi OS is useful, but does not guarantee that every format and end-to-end workload will run smoothly.
- The loop does not restart: Confirm that the playback method is configured to repeat the input, and inspect its logs at the point playback ends or errors.
- The stream fails after a reboot: Check startup configuration, media-file paths, network readiness, and whether credentials or stream settings are available to the process.
- Viewers cannot access the course: Recheck the platform’s visibility and access settings against the university’s requirements. An unlisted link is not the same as institutional authentication.
When a cloud service may fit better
Choose between self-hosting and a managed cloud stream based on whether a home device and connection can stay available, whether the Pi can handle the media without encoding, how much operational work you can take on, what access controls the course requires, and the current cost and terms. There is no independently established price or uptime comparison here.
