How to Reduce CPU Use When Looping Videos in OBS for YouTube Live

Reduce OBS CPU load methodically: check playback decoding, use compatible hardware encoding if x264 is the bottleneck, and simplify resource-heavy scenes.

To reduce CPU use, first identify whether OBS is spending the effort on video playback, stream encoding, or scene rendering. For a looping clip, use a Media Source with Loop enabled; then test hardware decoding, switch from x264 to a compatible hardware encoder if encoding is the bottleneck, and simplify resource-heavy scenes. These changes target separate workloads, so measure each on your own system rather than expecting a guaranteed CPU reduction.

Find which part of OBS is using resources

Looping a file does not by itself establish that playback is causing high CPU use. OBS says demands vary with the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. Treat playback decoding, stream encoding, and scene composition as separate areas to check.

  • Playback and decoding: OBS reads and decodes the video file.
  • Stream encoding: OBS encodes the outgoing video, using x264 on the CPU or a compatible hardware encoder.
  • Scene composition: OBS renders sources together, including browser content and overlays.

Set up the loop and test hardware decoding

  1. In OBS, add or select the local-file Media Source in the scene.
  2. In that source’s properties, enable Loop so the file starts again after playback completes.
  3. If your GPU has a suitable decoder for the clip, try Use hardware decoding when available in the Media Source properties.
  4. Compare CPU use and playback stability with decoding enabled and disabled, using the same file and scene. The setting’s availability does not guarantee it will lower CPU use for every codec or computer.

Hardware decoding handles the clip’s playback. It is separate from hardware encoding of the outgoing stream; turning on one does not mean the other is active.

Move stream encoding off the CPU if x264 is the bottleneck

If OBS is using x264 and encoding load is high, choose a compatible hardware encoder in OBS’s output settings. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. The option depends on your operating system and hardware:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • NVIDIA NVENC: available on supported NVIDIA hardware and Windows or Linux configurations.
  • AMD AMF: available on supported AMD GPUs in Windows or Linux configurations.
  • Intel Quick Sync: requires qualifying Intel graphics hardware on Windows or Linux.
  • Apple VideoToolbox: available on Apple platforms, with platform-specific streaming limitations.

Check OBS’s current hardware-encoding documentation and keep GPU drivers current. Older encoder generations can involve a quality trade-off, so judge the result at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. A graphics-card purchase is not a prerequisite for looping a video; first check whether your existing system already offers a suitable encoder.

Reduce scene-rendering work

  • Remove sources the active scene does not need, and keep the layout as simple as practical.
  • Reduce the number or dimensions of browser sources; OBS notes that browser sources can use substantial resources.
  • Use image sources for static overlays rather than heavier alternatives. Use Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio.
  • Make one change at a time and check whether rendering performance improves.

Keep YouTube’s ingest settings valid

Changing OBS performance settings does not remove YouTube’s ingest requirements. Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Example YouTube recommendation Recommended bitrate
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
H.264, 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU-saving targets. Raising bitrate is not a remedy for CPU load; choose a rate suitable for your connection and desired output. YouTube recommends testing your connection and stream before going live. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard and validate a full test

  1. If you are unsure which output settings your system can handle, run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
  2. Generally keep OBS defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them.
  3. Before a real broadcast, test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream.
  4. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and correct any warnings before relying on the setup.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom What to check What to try
The video does not repeat Confirm the selected source is the local-file Media Source and that Loop is enabled in its properties. Enable Loop and test past the end of the file.
Hardware decoding does not help or playback becomes unstable The GPU may not support decoding the clip’s codec, or the setting may not suit this system. Compare with the option off. Keep the more stable configuration; the setting is optional.
CPU remains high with x264 Check whether stream encoding, rather than media playback, is the workload. Try a compatible hardware encoder. Confirm the output remains acceptable at the intended YouTube settings.
Performance is still poor with hardware encoding Scene composition or browser sources may be consuming resources. Simplify the scene, reduce browser-source count or dimensions, and use simpler source types for static assets.
The stream buffers or YouTube reports ingest problems Check connection reliability, bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s current guidance. Test before going live and use a suitable bitrate; increasing it to address CPU use can make delivery less reliable.
