You can run a radio-style YouTube Live channel by sending a continuous program feed from prerecorded audio and visuals through an encoder. YouTube supplies the stream destination and key in Live Control Room; playback software, a supported hardware encoder, or a cloud service supplies the feed. The computer-based route works, but the playback system and internet connection must remain available and someone should monitor the stream. Prerecorded content still needs the proper rights for live use.

What you need for a continuous radio-style stream

YouTube does not provide a separate radio mode. This is an encoder-based live stream: your encoder sends a produced audio-and-visual program to YouTube, where viewers watch it on a Live page. YouTube supports encoder streaming alongside webcam and mobile options. See YouTube’s live streaming overview and encoder setup instructions.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live. The channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well before a planned launch.
  • Audio and visual files you have permission to use in a YouTube livestream and its archive.
  • A playback and encoding setup that can keep sending the program: local software on a computer, supported dedicated hardware, or a cloud service.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the complete encoded stream plus headroom.

Choose how the program will stay on air

There are three practical approaches. YouTube’s encoder directory names examples, but listing a device or service is not an endorsement; check its current documentation, compatibility, terms, and costs before committing.

Approach What it does What to weigh
Local software encoder Software on your computer plays and encodes the program, then sends it to YouTube. It can have little additional hardware cost if you already own a capable computer, but the machine, playback, and network must stay available. Confirm that your chosen software supports the playlist, file rotation, and unattended restart behavior you need; those capabilities are not established for a specific app here.
Dedicated hardware A hardware encoder sends the program without relying on a general-purpose computer for encoding. YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Check equipment cost, file compatibility, scheduling limits, and remote monitoring with the vendor.
Cloud service A vendor-hosted system plays uploaded files and sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos. Compare upload and storage workflow, playlist control, recovery behavior, subscription terms, and monitoring in current vendor documentation; prices and service-specific guarantees are not established here.

Whichever option you choose, continuous operation is not maintenance-free. Plan who will check the stream, how you will notice a failure, and what backup or recovery process is available. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring audio and video during transmission; redundancy can reduce interruption risk but adds complexity and cost. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Set up the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder

  1. Confirm live access. Verify the channel and check its standing in YouTube Studio before building the schedule. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream enablement.
  2. Create the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream, and set its title, description, and visibility. For initial testing, use unlisted or private visibility where available.
  3. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Reset it if it is exposed.
  4. Prepare the program feed. Load the audio and visuals into the playback setup, check that both are present, and confirm that the sequence behaves as intended when it reaches the end. Configure repeat or playlist rotation only if your software or device supports it.
  5. Set the encoder and network. Choose a resolution and bitrate that the encoder and connection can sustain. Use the applicable current recommendations in YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
  6. Start sending and inspect the preview. Start the encoder output, then check Live Control Room’s preview and stream health before making the broadcast public. Confirm that the audio is audible and balanced and that the visuals are moving and correctly framed.
  7. Monitor the live output. Check stream health and listen to or watch the actual transmission periodically. A feed that remains connected can still have silent audio, frozen visuals, or an unintended gap in the playlist.

Use settings that favor a stable feed

Exact bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and available upload bandwidth; do not choose a target that consumes all of the connection’s capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3; its advanced audio recommendations include stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the current settings guidance and your encoder’s available options before launch.

  • Transport: Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes it as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; obtain the corresponding server URL from Live Control Room. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  • Test representative material: Test the actual types of audio and visuals you plan to run, including transitions or changes in loudness, rather than checking only a still frame or a short tone.
  • Check the connection margin: YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation applies beyond the total stream bitrate. If upload capacity fluctuates, reduce the stream bitrate or improve the connection rather than operating at the limit.

Clear rights before putting music or visuals on air

Prerecording does not make a track or video exempt from YouTube’s live-stream rules. You are responsible for having the rights needed to use every recording, composition, visual, and other asset in the live stream, including any relevant licensing rights. Rights need to cover the intended use, territory, and any replay or archive you plan to make available. YouTube’s Terms of Service place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder replacing the stream, interruption, or termination. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: where applicable, the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Archived live streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Read YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and resolve permissions with the relevant rights holders before going live.

Do not assume that music described as “royalty-free,” purchased, or licensed is automatically cleared for YouTube Live. Review the actual license for livestreaming, distribution on YouTube, territories, and archiving, and ask about Content ID allowlisting if the rights holder uses that system.

Plan continuity, monitoring, and replay separately

A continuous channel needs more than a playlist: it needs a plan for interruptions and for what viewers can watch afterward. Decide who checks the preview, stream health, and sound; whether a backup encoder or connection is feasible; and how you will respond if the feed stops. YouTube recommends checking the archive file and testing failover as part of operational planning.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one indefinite stream being preserved intact. If replay access matters, schedule shorter broadcast sessions or verify current archive behavior in Studio before launch. Keep a separate local copy of source material and any archive you need, subject to your rights.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start a live stream The channel is not verified, has a live restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. Check live eligibility and channel standing in Studio. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
The encoder connects unreliably or drops The upload link lacks headroom, the network is unstable, or the encoder destination details are wrong. Check the server URL and key, monitor stream health, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom beyond total stream bitrate. Consider a lower bitrate or a more stable connection.
The stream is connected but silent The playlist, input routing, or encoder audio settings may be wrong. Listen to the Live Control Room preview and verify the selected audio source, codec, and audio output in the encoder.
Visuals freeze or fail to advance Playback may have stalled, a file may be incompatible, or a transition/playlist setting may not work as expected. Test the same files and playlist in advance, verify the encoder preview, and confirm the chosen setup supports the required repeat behavior.
Music is interrupted or the archive receives a claim YouTube detected third-party material or the rights do not cover the use. Review the asset’s license and contact the rights holder. If appropriate, request Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption.
The broadcast ends but no complete replay is available The stream exceeded the under-12-hour automatic archive statement or archive behavior differed from expectations. Check Studio’s current archive status. For replay reliability, use shorter sessions and maintain a separate local copy where permitted.
