How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Rented Linux Server with Docker Compose

Use FFmpeg in a Docker Compose service on a rented Linux server to send a prerecorded video stream to YouTube. Learn how to prepare the channel, protect the stream key, choose encoder settings, test recovery, and plan for archives.

You can keep a prerecorded video stream running on YouTube without leaving your own computer on by running FFmpeg on a rented Linux server and managing it with Docker Compose. The server reads media from storage, encodes or passes it through as appropriate, and sends it to YouTube over RTMPS using a stream key from Live Control Room. Compose can restart a failed container, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service or fix a YouTube, network, server, media, or credential problem.

What you need before setting up the server

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream through an encoder. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours; encoder streaming also requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and livestream terms and conditions before planning a start time.
  • A Linux server with enough sustained outbound capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus room for audio and network overhead. If FFmpeg must transcode, the server also needs adequate CPU capacity. Provider limits, server performance, and prices vary by product and location; compare those details before renting.
  • The video and audio files you intend to stream, stored where the container can read them. Use only material you are authorized to stream, including music and other third-party content. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream after identifying third-party content or applying a strike; see YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. Rights clearance and eligibility under YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies are separate questions, so check the current rules that apply to your channel.
  • Docker Engine and Docker Compose installed on the server, and a maintained FFmpeg image or container that you are prepared to update and monitor.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream for encoder software and locate its connection details. The exact controls can vary with YouTube’s current interface; follow the current encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s stream documentation describes these as separate connection details; some encoders accept separate fields, while others use a combined destination. Use the values YouTube provides rather than guessing or reconstructing an endpoint: YouTube LiveStreams documentation.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS destination when it is available. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection; YouTube specifies TLS and port 443 in its RTMPS guidance and RTMPS ingestion documentation.
  4. Treat the key like a password. Do not commit it to source control, bake it into a container image, or publish it in a Compose file. Supply it through a protected runtime configuration supported by your deployment, and consult current Docker documentation for the appropriate secret-handling mechanism. If the key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube and update the server configuration.

Design the Compose service around the stream

Compose should describe one long-running FFmpeg service, its media access, its protected stream credentials, and any persistent output such as local recordings. The precise YAML depends on the chosen image, FFmpeg command, Docker version, and secret mechanism. The available YouTube and FFmpeg guidance does not establish one universal Compose file or hosting-server size, so verify current Compose syntax and the selected image’s documentation rather than copying an untested configuration.

Media and persistence

  • Mount the source media so the container can read it; make that mount read-only if the workflow does not need to alter the source files.
  • If you record locally, write recordings to a persistent volume or host directory rather than the container’s writable layer. Set a storage limit or monitor free space so a growing archive cannot silently fill the server disk.
  • Check that the container’s FFmpeg build supports the input formats and codecs in your files. A media file that plays on a desktop is not automatically a valid, stable input for a long-running encoder.

Looping, encoding, and restarts

  • Configure FFmpeg to read the source at real-time speed and repeat or sequence files in the intended order. Test what happens when each file ends; a process that exits at end-of-file will stop the stream unless the loop or playlist behavior is configured correctly.
  • If the source already matches YouTube’s accepted output requirements, stream-copy may reduce server compute, but it does not correct incompatible codecs, frame rate, audio, or keyframe spacing. Transcoding can solve format mismatches but uses CPU and must be tested with the actual files and server.
  • Use a container restart policy to recover from a process or container exit, and make logs and health monitoring visible to whoever operates the stream. A restart policy alone does not detect every failed feed or restore a rejected key, provider outage, broken file, or YouTube-side interruption.
  • Keep the image and operating system maintained, restrict who can read credentials, and ensure that the server can reach YouTube’s ingest service over the required encrypted connection.

Choose video and audio settings for YouTube

Set the output to match the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to publish. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not assume one bitrate is right for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its RTMPS ingest recommendations.

Make sure the rented server’s sustained upload capacity exceeds the selected video bitrate by enough to carry audio and protocol overhead reliably. A speed test is only a snapshot, not proof of sustained capacity. If you transcode, test CPU use during representative scenes; complex or high-frame-rate material may require more compute than a static picture.

Start with a test stream, then monitor both ends

  1. Use a test or unlisted stream where appropriate, and start with a representative section of the media rather than assuming every file behaves alike.
  2. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that video appears, audio is audible, and the feed remains stable before relying on the setup.
  3. Check the server’s FFmpeg logs for input, encoding, and connection errors. If local recording is enabled, verify that the recording file is growing and that the volume has free space.
  4. Test the failure cases that matter to your operation: container exit and restart, server reboot, media end and loop behavior, key rotation, and any alerting you have configured. Confirm that recovery is visible rather than assuming that a running container means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

YouTube’s livestream tips recommend testing and monitoring stream quality. Monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room together helps distinguish a healthy process from a healthy public feed.

Plan separately for uptime and replay

A continuously running stream is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. The limits are described in YouTube’s pages on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

If a replay matters, plan a separate local recording and monitor its disk use. You could also investigate a schedule that creates shorter sessions, but test how session boundaries affect the public viewing experience before relying on that approach. A Docker restart may bring the encoder process back; it does not guarantee that a continuous public session or complete replay is preserved.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming stream Connection details, key, or network path Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s connection error, and verify that the server can reach the RTMPS ingest service over TLS on port 443. Rotate an exposed or stale key and update the protected runtime configuration.
The stream starts, then ends when a file finishes Input or playlist behavior Check the FFmpeg input and repeat/playlist configuration. Test a full end-of-file transition and confirm the process remains alive for the next item.
Video or audio is rejected, missing, or unstable Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or source media Inspect the actual output settings and compare them with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Verify the file’s audio and video streams; decide whether to correct the source or transcode, then test again.
The container repeatedly restarts FFmpeg exit, unreadable media, or invalid configuration Read the container logs before changing restart behavior. Resolve the underlying file, command, or credential error; make sure a restart loop is visible to the operator.
Playback buffers or stream health degrades Server upload capacity, route, or compute load Check sustained outbound use and provider transfer or bandwidth limits, then compare available capacity with the chosen output bitrate plus overhead. If transcoding, inspect CPU load and consider a lower supported output setting or a server with more capacity.
The encoder is live but a replay is missing or incomplete YouTube archive and DVR limits, or local storage Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours and whether a local recording was configured and completed. Verify disk space and recording output; do not rely on a very long YouTube session as the only archive.
The stream is interrupted after running normally YouTube review, rights, or account restriction Check Live Control Room and YouTube notifications. Review whether all video and audio are authorized for this use and whether the channel has an active live-stream restriction; use the relevant copyright guidance and livestream terms.
