Use a system-level systemd service to run your encoder in the foreground, restart it after unexpected failures, and start it at boot. That keeps the process independent of your SSH session—but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. You still need a healthy source, working network and encoder settings YouTube accepts, plus monitoring of both the service and the actual stream.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd supervises a process on your server. If the encoder exits unexpectedly, a restart policy can launch it again; enabling the service can also start it when the server boots. Running the encoder as a system service means it does not depend on an interactive SSH login.
This is process recovery, not end-to-end stream availability. systemd cannot restore a missing video source, fix insufficient CPU or upload capacity, repair DNS or firewall problems, guarantee YouTube ingest availability, or confirm that viewers receive healthy video. A service marked active is not proof that the YouTube stream is working.
A single YouTube session should not be treated as indefinite: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan around that documented boundary rather than assuming a restarted process can keep one session live forever.

Prepare the encoder and YouTube stream
Choose an encoder and continuous source
Install an encoder suitable for your input, such as FFmpeg or an appropriate headless OBS workflow. Make sure the source can supply continuous audio and video and that the encoder can run without an interactive terminal. The correct command, paths, and reconnect behavior depend on the encoder and source; check that encoder’s own documentation rather than assuming systemd provides reconnect logic.
Connect to YouTube securely
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or configure the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder with the URL and key, then start the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address; treat the key as a secret. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported by your encoder and setup, since YouTube recommends encrypted transport.
- Keep the key out of public files, shell history, and logs. Use restrictive file permissions and a credential mechanism supported by the systemd version on the server. Do not put a secret in a world-readable unit file.
Set compatible video and network parameters
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; these combinations have different recommendations.

For one specific example, YouTube’s table recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/30 fps, with 5 Mbps as the minimum. Do not apply that figure to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom: test the server’s actual upload path, not its download speed, and account for other traffic or a backup encoder.
Create a system-level service
The following is a configuration pattern, not a copy-paste unit: the correct executable, arguments, paths, user, credential method, and hardening options depend on your encoder, distribution, and systemd version. Use a system-level .service unit in the system unit directory for a workload that must not depend on a user login. Run the encoder directly in the foreground so systemd tracks the real process, under a dedicated unprivileged service account with only the access it needs.

Choose restart behavior deliberately
For unexpected failures, a policy such as Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay is a reasonable starting point. Verify the syntax and available directives against the installed systemd version. Avoid treating Restart=always as a universal fix: a normal exit may mean the stream ended intentionally, while a rapid restart loop can conceal a persistent configuration error or run into systemd start limits.
Load, enable, and start the unit
- Save the unit under the system unit directory using your chosen service name. Confirm its command runs in the foreground and that its service account can read the input and credential files it needs.
- Reload the system manager’s unit configuration, then enable the service if it should start at boot and start it now. The exact commands and paths depend on the distribution and unit name.
- Inspect
systemctl status <unit>andjournalctl -u <unit>for startup errors, exits, and restart behavior. - Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, then verify audio, video, and viewer playback. Do not rely only on systemd’s active state.
Test recovery and monitor the broadcast
Test before relying on automatic restart
Deliberately test a controlled encoder failure and confirm the configured policy restarts the process. Then verify that the encoder reconnects successfully and YouTube receives a healthy feed. An automatic process restart does not establish that the encoder can reconnect after every network interruption; confirm that behavior for your chosen encoder.

Watch both the server and YouTube
- On the server: monitor the unit state and journal for crashes, repeated restarts, permission errors, and resource problems.
- At YouTube: check the preview, stream-health messages, audio/video quality, and viewer playback.
- On the network: measure available upload capacity from the server and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Investigate DNS, firewall, and connectivity issues separately from process failures.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health during it. A process that stays alive can still send unusable video or fail to reach YouTube.

| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The service stops when SSH disconnects | The encoder may be running in the interactive session rather than under a system service. | Run it as a system-level unit in the foreground and inspect the unit’s status and journal. |
| The service does not start after reboot | The unit may not be enabled, or it may fail during startup. | Check the unit’s boot enablement, then inspect systemctl status <unit> and journalctl -u <unit>. |
| systemd reports repeated restarts | The encoder may have a persistent configuration, permission, input, or network error; start limits may also be involved. | Read the journal to identify why the process exits. Fix the underlying cause and use a deliberate restart delay instead of assuming more restarts will solve it. |
| The service is active but YouTube has no healthy feed | The encoder may not be sending valid video, may have lost its source, or may not be reaching YouTube. | Check encoder logs, source availability, stream URL and key, YouTube preview and health status, and the server’s network path. |
| The feed is unstable or drops under load | Upload bandwidth, CPU capacity, or competing server traffic may be insufficient. | Check actual server egress and encoder load. Compare total bitrate with sustainable upload capacity while keeping the recommended 20% headroom. |
| YouTube rejects or degrades the feed | Codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval may not match the selected stream settings. | Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current settings guidance for that exact video combination; use constant bitrate and the recommended two-second keyframe interval where applicable. |
| The key may have been exposed | A credential may be present in a public file, command history, or logs. | Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, update the encoder’s protected credential, and check file access and logging. |
