How to Schedule a Recorded Sermon for YouTube Live in YouTube Studio

Create a scheduled encoder stream in YouTube Studio, play the sermon file through OBS, and check the feed before the service begins.

To schedule a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live event, create a scheduled encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then use software such as OBS to play the sermon file into that event at the service time. Studio creates the event and provides its stream URL and key; the encoder sends the video. There is no direct control in Studio to select a prerecorded file and schedule it as a Live stream.

Choose the right way to publish the sermon

Use an encoder-based livestream when you want a scheduled Live event and watch page, and want the recording to play at the event time. It requires an encoder to send the video feed while the event is live.

  • Premiere: Schedule an uploaded video to play with viewers on a watch page, with reminders and chat. Choose this if you want a shared viewing event but do not need an encoder feed.
  • Scheduled publishing: Set an uploaded video to change from private to public at a chosen date and time. Choose this if the sermon simply needs to become available then.

These options behave differently from an encoder-based Live stream. If you choose Live, follow the steps below.

Before scheduling: check channel and file readiness

Confirm the channel can stream live

Live streaming must be enabled for the channel. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours. Its live-streaming tips also require a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check this before announcing the event, particularly if this is the church’s first stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions and live-streaming tips.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare the recording and playback scene

Install and configure an encoder such as OBS Studio on the computer that will run the stream. In OBS, create a scene and add the recording as a Media Source. OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Turn off looping for a one-time sermon. If the source is set to hide when playback ends, decide in advance what viewers should see next—such as an intentional ending scene—rather than leaving an unexpected blank screen. OBS explains these source options in its Media Sources documentation.

Check that the recording plays from beginning to end, that its audio is audible, and that its picture fits the intended stream layout. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and using the Live Control Room preview; choose resolution and bitrate in line with the encoder configuration and available upload capacity rather than relying on one universal setting. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance.

Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio: choose Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Studio labels can change, so follow the current interface if wording differs.
  2. Set up the event: reuse a previous stream’s settings or create a new stream. Add the sermon’s title and description, and set its date, time, audience, and visibility. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility. A scheduled event can be shared, and viewers may be able to set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions.
  3. Copy the connection details: in the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter those details using the YouTube ingest method shown for the event.
  4. Protect the stream key: treat it like a password. Do not show it in volunteer instructions, screenshots, or shared chat. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset workflow and update the encoder with the replacement key. YouTube explains stream-key handling in its stream settings help.
  5. Save and verify the scheduled event: confirm its date, time, title, and visibility in Studio, then share the event watch page with the congregation.

Start, preview, and end the sermon stream

  1. Set up early: YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  2. Start playback in OBS: select the sermon scene and start streaming. Check the Live Control Room preview to confirm both picture and sound are reaching YouTube.
  3. Check viewer access: open the event from the channel or watch page and, if possible, check it on a mobile device. Confirm the intended audience can access it before the service begins.
  4. Monitor the stream: watch for video or audio problems through the service. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health; its preparation guidance is at YouTube Help and encoder settings.
  5. End deliberately: when the sermon is over, end the event in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. Then check the replay in YouTube Studio’s Live content area. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams longer than that. See YouTube’s live-stream instructions.

Copyright and church-content checks

Before streaming, confirm that the church has the rights needed for every element in the recording, including music, photographs, video clips, and any other third-party material. A sermon recording being owned by the church does not by itself establish permission for material embedded in it. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and the church’s relevant licenses before the event; do not assume that attribution or a religious context grants permission.

Common problems and fixes

  • The channel cannot start a Live stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and it has no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. If enabling is new, YouTube says it may take up to 24 hours.
  • The scheduled event is missing or has the wrong details: return to Studio’s Live Control Room and verify the event date, time, visibility, and title. Make sure the encoder is connected to the key for that specific event.
  • OBS is streaming, but the Live Control Room has no picture: check the OBS stream URL and key against the scheduled event, ensure the correct scene is selected, and confirm the Media Source is not hidden or stopped.
  • Viewers cannot hear the sermon: check the recording’s audio in OBS and the Live Control Room preview before going live. Monitor the stream during the event.
  • The video ends early or repeats: check the source file’s duration and playback position. For a one-time sermon, ensure Media Source looping is off; decide whether the source should hide at the end and prepare an ending scene if needed.
  • The event plays for the wrong audience: verify visibility and audience settings in Studio, then test access from the event watch page before the service.
